Why does Toronto owe this guy a 1.8MILLION dollar golden parachute???? He's done. He did nothing for us either. This is pure vanity,

He was very good prior to his injury. I don't think we can get anyone better in our bottom six for that salary.

He wasn't very good. He was a on a streak when the team was already playing well

He sucked for good 8 games to start the season

So if he gets injured he won't be good ? Then get used to it. For last 5 years he has all kind of injuries

Why would u sign a play who has played average of 35 games last 4 years?

Because he's signed to 4th line money, gives you depth options and can play a regular bottom 6 shift without hurting you.

Big issue with Simmonds is people want him to be a top 6 forward and don't accept him as a Clifford level player who fills that role now.

My concern isn't so much his abilities, it's how he fits in with Spezza locked to the 4th line. He can keep up on a 3rd line but he certainly isn't good there, so we need to be ready for him rolling around the 4th line and press box.

He can't play in a winning team. Sure he can be a 4th liner, in Arizona

Winning teams have players thst can be impactful. He can no longer be impactful in any spot of line up

Just because he's going to play 4th line doesn't mean he's not expected to contribute one way or another

He can't even skate anymore. He was 4 steps behind against the Habs, he fell every other shift and he couldn't even dump and chase

If you want a 4th line energy guy, there will be plenty to sign in today's market.

I rather Leafs give Tobias Reider a contract for a 4th line role or even Boyd. Boyd is miles better than Simmonds and that says a lot

Simmonds doesn't actually prevent any of those signings, so it isn't an either or situation.

And he's a fine contributor on a 4th line, playing safe minutes in a limited role who can spot in as needed. He's a better skater than many other players doing the same type of job.

I delight in criticizing Dubas' moves but honest to goodness how do you criticize a contract that can be disappeared at any time? Now if Dubas believes signing Simmonds to a retirement contract takes care of the team's grit needs for the next two seasons, that's another story and certainly not Simmonds' fault.

Ok who is he a better skater than ? I'm curious

He's not even a better skater than Sabourin who actually hits
Is he a better skater than Martin or even a player ?

Only person he can outskate on the leafs is Jason. Who is in different league than Simmonds

I dont care for contracts. I care about the culture. Simmonds sucks. We have this culture of being cute and nice.

Saying the right stuff and doing the right stuff. Everything except for being good at hockey

Why even bring a player back who utterly sucked and did nothing when it mattered

Leo, Martin and Clifford - who were the previous 3 "tough" 4th liners we employed. His speed is significantly better.

To fill a role and be a depth player. To compete for a spot. He's an NHL player, just not the top line guy ppl remember in Philly. The guys signed for 900k and you're outraged. Outraged at that thought, when we saw him play everywhere from our 2nd through 4th line last year with varying effectiveness.

You think his speed is better than Leo Clifford and Martin ?

Well then I dont have anything to say

Even Clifford threw a massive hit against Columbus. I dont remember Simmonds doing Jack against the Habs

Keefe is a moron for the improper use of Vesey? How dare he not pay attention to such a game breaking player.
I must be a moron because every point you make seems irrelevant. Maybe I cant recognize genius.
I’ve actually been getting that vibe. I had to explain F1, F2 and F3 to you. You don’t know as much about hockey as you think you do.

It’s only a 12 minute sample size but Vesey-Kerfoot-Nylander have CF% 80.95 and xGF% 59.73

my question is why do you watch games with a blindfold on? It’s very easy to see they played well together

Simmonds is washed up. This is more mediocrity by a mediocre organization and I have my own ideas why he was retained by Dubas.

First we moan that we are too soft and then we add grit to our 4th line that can fight and keep opponents honest for 900k we trash him. He takes Cliffords place in our roster with contract that we can bury any day if needed. Also from Toronto and based on comments seems to be good person to keep around your team and bench. Active and vocal, something that we lack.

I don't know how you can hate that contract, when its 900k / year. Fair value for his play and we can still throw him front of the net for 2pp if we need net front presence.

Unless you're into formula racing people don't know there is f2 and f3 racing. Everyone just know F1 that's where all the marketing goes

:sarcasm:

What toughness ? He fought Jordi Benn. He didn't even fight the right Benn

Oh yeah Chariot. Forgot about that. A D not known for fighting. Can't forget Adler guy who has no fight

When Taney was man handling Matthews and cross checking him. He did nothing

Lucic runs over Holl, he does nothing
Anderson takes runs at muzzin. He does nothing

Anderson takes a run st him, he does nothing

Does he lay a hit on any team ? No
He can't make a straight pass

Sabrouin in one game hit a flame player then beat up Lucic

Yet somehow he gets a contract and makes more money than Spezza ?

Even Spezza stood for this team in playoffs year. Whst did Simmonds during playoff. ?

only in Toronto is it a good idea to resign a old, worn out, pugilist with a broken hand. Whatevr could go wrong?

Simmonds isn't standing in the way of signing anyone else. As the past season showed the Leafs will likely ink a bunch of these depth guys to experiment with over the course of the season. It's not going to be the same 12 forwards playing all 82 games

Exactly, given the financial might of the Leafs, they can sign 20 900k players(contacts slot aside) and just choose to dress the best ones.

Why are fans complaining about a 900k signings. It can be bury any time.

I guess the Nic Petans of this world are better playing on our 4th line even though they don't really produce better than guys like Simmonds when given chances in the NHL.

100% let's just hope Simmonds is playing on the Marlies the next 2 years
