A lack of creativity shown by what's supposed to be a forward thinking analytics GM. Re-signing an old injury prone player past his best who didn't show up in the playoffs. People can go on about an injury but it's not like there's a lack of cheap 4th line options in the NHL to try out.

If anything, the injury is a good reason why we shouldn't have brought him back. A guy who's one hand injury away from being useless isn't very useful in the first place.

This is it in a nut shell yet we continue to hear poster defend both Dubas and Marner

Nudge took lower AAV to get more years. Marner and Matty took lower AAV because they took fewer years. What the f*** do they get for 8 years ?? Jesus Dubas and Shanny are pure idiots and their bosses are even bigger idiots in believing whatever bs they are being fed by these two clowns and their monkey coach.

I am now on the "we gotta move Marner and his cap hit" train if they want to get the team back on the rails. No f'n brainer.

Simmonds role is 2nd PP net front and banger on the 4th line. Finding a guy who can do what he does with speed for 900 k is gonna be a lot tougher than you think. And if we did find a guy who can do what he does with speed he will be on the 3rd line.

This signing isnt hurting us, our 3rd line is more of what we need to worry about not the 4th.

I think this is a decent signing. Outside of his hand injury he played well enough for us.

You can't compare it to Spezza's contract, Spezza is effectively donating money to the team to help manage the cap. The amount of money is trivial anyways.

It's always going to be a bit of a crap-shoot bringing in old vets on the downside of their careers. It worked pretty well with Simmons, so it makes sense to bring him back.

Jumbo Joe is a whole different picture. If they even *think* about bringing him back, then they deserve all the spite and hate and ridicule they get.

Some of you people are ridiculous. This is a good deal that doesn't have much risk attached to it. A depth veteran player making pretty low end money. I never really cared for Simmonds either but this isn't a signing to groan about.

You are right, just don't stop at Simmonds when it comes to adding players who are difficult to play against. Last year they added Vesey, Boyd and Jumbo after they signed Simmonds. Wrong choices though I did like Boyd on the 4th line.

I'd point out that just about every pro hockey player is one hand injury away from being useless. However your point is well taken. He's both declining and recovering from an injury that made him near useless at the end of the season. And what threat to fight is he if his hand is messed up? Still, this contract can be completely buried so as long as he hasn't been chosen as the team's lone grit element. And since from all accounts he is a good teammate, it's a completely harmless signing at worst.

Simmonds would be most useful if he could play like Matt Martin 75% of the time because he can't do it as well as Martin, but he has to do it in the playoffs. What he does on the 4th line in the regular season means squat.

don't understand the 2 yr term but it's not my cash and the entire salary can be buried so i don't care

my concern with re signing Simmonds is we better be able to carry a 22/23 man roster because if we can't his roster spot needed to go to a better player

I have just watched some of the clips of Simmonds' interview about the playoff sting. He also mentions about pushing team mates to do better. Since he is from Scarborough, maybe he can train with Marner and push him to actually train so he won't be such a wussy come playoff time.

Please don’t forget how good Simmonds was before injury.

If people are going to keep harping on about his 6 game hot streak then why not mention that he was awful in the first 6 games of the season and completely useless once he came back from injury.

If he wasn't fully healthy then he shouldn't have come back early. It's not like the team desperately needed his 4 points in 26 games post-injury to make the playoffs.

Fair point. Can't imagine Seattle selects Simmonds (or Spezza) though with younger and potentially longer term options available.

When Spezz went through waivers last year, he let it be known that he would retire rather than move so no worries about him, Simmonds could possibly be picked up but there will be other more attractive options available from the Leafs

Mitch Marner had a bad playoffs. Simmonds is not in a position to push anyone in this team
Mitch still a star in this league, Simmonds is essentially nobody

Simmonds himself was never known for his work ethic.

Mitch was very clear about who pushed him made him better, it was Matt Martin who was like an older brother to him
Martin knew his role really well. Unfortunately, he was never given an opportunity to play in playoffs

The one playoff he did play, he had 2 points in 6 games, including that one play with Kapanen scoring the winner

Funny, we want Simmonds to play like Martin, yet we had Martin
Martin at 2.5 seems like a better deal than Trevor Moore, Gauthier, Simmonds and Mikaheyev combined

Lol. Good luck to Simmonds in that endeavour.

The problem isn't that we signed him, he's an okay guy to have in the organization. The problem is that he probably expects to have a regular shift and be in the lineup most nights. He has almost nothing left in the tank, and should be considered a fifth or sixth liner on this team. He was one of the worst forwards in the league at even strength last season. I'm surprised they resigned him at all, and I'm shocked at the second year.

I am convinced he knows he's done in NHL and so do the Leafs brass

Remember Mike Zigamonis? he didn't want to be waived in case some team picked him up. He wanted to play for the Marlies because he was raising his family here. He didn't want to go anywhere

To me this is that type of scenario. Simmonds knows he's done in NHL, he'll get an NHL deal playing in AHL and protect the cubs
Clune has done a respectable job protecting our kids, but he has ran his course

Why does Toronto owe this guy a 1.8MILLION dollar golden parachute???? He's done. He did nothing for us either. This is pure vanity,

Vesey would have been fine if he played with his Harvard teammate Kerfoot. The few games they got together they had really good chemistry and the underlying numbers showed that

problem is Keefe is an absolute moron for not seeing it

Keefe is a moron for the improper use of Vesey? How dare he not pay attention to such a game breaking player.
I must be a moron because every point you make seems irrelevant. Maybe I cant recognize genius.

Engvall, Soup, Spezza, Simmonds, Brookes

We're going nowhere

Top 6 that can't compete in the playoffs and bottom 6 with no identity
They bring vet guys in who haven't won a thing.
Corey Perry was in waivers who needed a loser like that
Now he will play for Montreal next year.
Always wanted him he is a shit disturbed bloody nose and all ..
