When Dubas finally took the podium following Keefe, he gave an honest, public reflection of himself and instead of providing answers on his future, raised way more questions when he announced that he was not ready to fully commit to returning.

No one — from the media to the MLSE board to Shanahan — anticipated hearing Dubas’s spectacular indecision.

Pressure can come from many different directions and there’s no doubting the emotion he showed at the media conference was real.

Dubas was distraught.

“It’s been a taxing year on them and that’s very important to me,” he said referring to his wife and children. “My family is a hugely important partner in what I do. So, for me to commit without having a fuller understanding of what this year took on them is probably unfair of me to answer.”

Compared to when I played, society is more aware and understanding of mental health and MLSE, at the corporate level, has bought in. Their financial commitment in the last five years has given players, staff and their families the best opportunity to succeed outside of the game.

Medical advisers, psychologists, analytics, nutritionists, and even sleep disorder specialists have a place within the organization. MLSE have become the envy of the league when it comes to having established sports science departments and their commitment to inclusion and diversity. No stone was left unturned when it came to establishing a team who could help players and staff find success and stability.

And all those departments the billion-dollar empire has in place were established to alleviate the exact external pressures Dubas felt Monday — to help him keep his eye on the prize: winning.

Now there are those who feel that the GM, who’s finished five seasons with the Leafs, deserves time and privacy to take care of matters far more important than chasing a Stanley Cup.

But let’s be clear: if Dubas is suffering from burnout at age 37 then he should take the time to address those important challenges and not commit to signing the contract extension he has been offered.

And from MLSE’s standpoint, with all we now know, is he truly the right person to lead this group going forward?

..........

Some insiders believe the contract extension Dubas has been sitting on is worth roughly $4 million annually and includes access to the company jet ...

Swedish media speculating the fact that Nylander has not shown up yet at the worlds may indicate Toronto wants to move him and wont risk him being injured. Thoughts?

Does the team have the ability to tell Nylander not to play in the Worlds in the offseason? I don't recall ever hearing something like that.

If there is an ounce of truth to this... Thank you for your services Auston. Good luck with your new team (except against the Leafs when Leafs aren't tanking)

WOW. Any more story about why that might have been the case?

Media? Locker Room? Culture? Coach? Playing Role? Minutes? Anything else?

???
Every player we’ve acquired from the outside always has some thought along the lines of being more physical, competing harder, starting on time, playing heavier, etc.
The sum of the core and their mentality isn’t going to push forward.

Again this is just so bizarre. His results weren't good enough last year to receive an extension, the team has the same issues, and bows out early again, but now he's deserving. And sorry I don't buy the whole family thing. If he's feeling too much pressure at 37 ths market isn't for him. He just doesn' want to fire keefe or one of the core, because he's loyal to a fault IMO

I'm for big moves, so I agree with you.
Florida just got lucky.
Hawks got lucky. More like Zito saw an opportunity and took it. Was he also lucky to get Bennett. Were the VGK lucky to hire Cassidy ?? Dubas traded for Murray and signed Jarnkrok for 4 years.

Either all this silence is because MLSE is negotiating with Dubas and won't make any decisions or announcements until that's done, or they are slow-rolling bringing everyone back and hoping that in the meantime Leafs fans get on with their Summer and forget about it?

I'd go with the former as the latter is a ridiculous notion. For us fans, there is no Summer just a transition between being miserable (April/May) and hopeful (September).

If they believe that, they are dumber than I think they are.

It sure looks like nobody is in charge of the insane asylum.
Dubas indicates he might walk on his own and where is Shanahan?
The draft is in a month, the President is MIA, the GM is having a long discussion with his wife and family about continuing on, the Coach that they decide to go with needs to have input into the draft,.

Matthews & Marner have NMC as of July 1st and Willy gets a mNTC as of July 1st. If a trade is made, shouldnt they be on the horn now to determine who best to trade if any?
What about Matt Murray? Should they see if they can trade him before a buyout? Might mean a pick in the draft.
O'Rielly?...anyone negotiating
Kampf?
Acciari?
Bunting?
ZAR?
Schenn?

When Rogers and Bell insisted on not extending Dubas last year (and they could have and still fired him this year), did the board of directors not have a contingency plan?

They made their own "luck" by sticking their collective necks out and by pure hard work, something the Leafs are afraid to do.

PS- Stop responding to arguments I never made and taking pieces of sentences and posting them without context. Thanks.

Welp apparently people aren't able to understand this is a good team and not every piece is rotten and needs to be blown up. This site since even before the loss is unusable for any actual hockey discussion. Just people blowing anger over and over with no rational thought. Thought it was just the main boards trolling but our forum is even worse.

See y'all around the draft.

Dubas's health, family and happiness come first. So if he's having a tough time, if things are affecting his family life, he should resign. Re-set and take some time.

Now from a purely business sense, MLSE must be thinking we're going to extend a guy who is having a hard time here with major decisions coming up in the near future!?

I wonder how much of this is just posturing in the media, while behind the scenes there are differences of opinion on how to proceed. It wouldn't be a complete shock to me, that Dubas wants to make some major changes and is asking for full autonomy, and there are internal discussions as to whether they are willing to give that.

Either that or Shanny has told him he wants 1 or 2 coe guys traded and Shanny is waiting to hear back from Dubie if he wants to do it .. da family story is entirely BS for sure .. his wife loves her new home and school situation for kids .. any of us who lived 1 income lives/careers where wifey has stayed home and looked after kids realized what we missed .. but husbands and wives have been making these decisions for many years and this is not a shock .. it is a great move for MLSE and/or Dubie playing da family card though in todays changed societal norms .. makes me LOL .. but todays milenials eat this sh*t up .. marketing extraordinary here

I'm with you. When Dubas mentioned family I was asking people here WTF he's talking about. You have your dream job, you're making a ton of money and you think it's appropriate to whine to the media that you have job related stress? Gimmeafugginbreak.

At least we are on the same page, that this is likely about the future direction of the team and if all of the management are on the same page about it.

One thing for certain, we have to get this GM situation sorted out ASAP, so that we have adequate time to explore changes, before NTC's kick in. (without being rushed)

Doubtful. Considering the main focus is on if the current GM will even agree to stay on, I doubt they've made a firm decision about trading core asset yet. Not to mention the guys got the entire season to recover even if something happened at the tournament.

It's probably a personal issue keeping him away

Interesting!

If true just goes on to show what ROR thinks of Leafs' chances of going deep in post season with this core.
He is a declining asset. Dodged a bullet here unless he signed for 4 Million or less. Had a nice run here, but Blues fans werent' sad to see him leave based on his play (not the person).
