Seems like the reports of the Team being caught off guard by his comments at the presser are true. As with his wording he was taking time to think about his tenure here and his future.

This wording is the Team saying F that if you're not all in, we'll find someone that is, and moved on before his decision was made, which I can respect as an organization, Dubas should have made his mind up by now.

It's unfortunate timing as the boys loved him and this throws a massive wrench into getting extensions done before July 1st.

wow! Be interesting to see who the next guy is? Overall I don't think Dubas was as bad as what some people would make him out to be to be. Sure he had some blunders but most GM's do.

Hopefully the new guy is better at negotiating contracts with core players. Will be an interesting few weeks

Would you move him on retaining half? $2.35 dead space this year is probably better then $2m next year with new contracts firing up.
Its a tough pill because unlike the front loaded Leaf deals there would be $3M owed even at 50%. The sweetener required is the thing because they have dealt so many picks. Buriable money where the new club had to eat around $1M would have a low cost and a bunch of interested parties but $3M probably means the next club would expect him to play and his again reinforced rep as an egg shell would make that extremely unlikely. I think his next deal will be somewhere for league minimum.

If they make it their goal to save $2M in moving one of the big 3 its more asset friendly.

Why did Dubas and the Leafs part ways?

In what we assume was Dubas’ final press conference as Leafs GM, he was open about the serious emotional toll this past year had on him and his family. Elliotte Friedman, who first broke the news, would later report that Dubas told MLSE any decision on his future would only come after a lengthy conversation with his family. It feels fair to assume then that — at least in some part — the toll of the position and season led to Dubas not renewing his contract with the Leafs.

What will the next Leafs GM have on their plate?

There are no shortage of massive decisions for the next GM. Should one or more of the core four forwards, two of whom have only one year remaining on their contracts, be traded? Trading any one of those players doesn’t feel like a winnable deal at first glance for the Leafs.

The next GM will have to carefully consider both the options available in a trade, and what kind of identity they want this Leafs team to have moving forward. And what’s to become of coach Sheldon Keefe, who was brought up through the Leafs organization by Dubas? Keefe only has one playoff series win to his name as Leafs head coach. It feels fair to assume that the next GM would bring in a new coach to suit their vision.

What they’re saying

“I would like to thank Kyle for his unwavering dedication over these last nine seasons with the organization, including his last five as general manager,” Brendan Shanahan, president and alternate governor of the Maple Leafs, said. “Kyle fostered a great culture within our dressing room and staff, and consistently pushed to make our team better season over season. We wish Kyle and his family the best moving forward and thank him for his valuable contributions.”

Dreger on Panthers winning in quadruple-OT, the Leafs still waiting on Dubas and more - TSN.ca

TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger joins us to chat about the quadruple-OT victory by the Panthers over the Hurricanes, if he was able to stay up for the entire game, the controversial goalie interference call, if Brandon Pridham will replace Kyle Dubas and more.

WILL BRAD TRELIVING BE THE NEXT GM OF THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS?

Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 and was asked the question about Toronto’s GM situation. He believes the Leafs want to keep Kyle Dubas as GM, but if the workload is too much and he wants time to spend with family, he will not be back and a decision will be made either today or this weekend.

Dreger went on to say in his radio hit, that if Dubas is not back, they will NOT hire internally. Assistant GM Brandon Pridham is the logical choice, but they will look for a GM with experience. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in win now mode and they need a GM that can come in and do what is needed for them to be a Stanley Cup contender.

Dreger believes former Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving would be the perfect choice for the Leafs if Dubas decides not to come back.
Didn't Dreger say that KD had a deal in his hand. Eklund 2.0 :)

I think Dubas did have a deal in hand. I also think that Shanny gave him until noon Friday to decide, and when he didn't get an answer they pulled it.

I think at that point they pretty much had to.

This is now 2 GMs that went to full term without extension from Shanahan, with a lame-duck year thrown in at the end.

It's time to ask the Shanahan question as well. .

He's in no position to demand anything if true. His resume with the Leafs - talented, soft, core who couldn't win anything but the regular season, but he stuck with them anyway. A coach who was out-coached in every playoff series who couldn't get his team to start on time, or avoid getting goalied every year. He had no answers

Pumped to hear Dumbass is out. They need to make a lot of changes and the rebuild will be tough but it needs to happen. Wonder where Mathews and Marner end up.
