Willy deserved it, he was full on beast mode. I was actually a little surprised that he picked up 5 tonight, I didn't realize it until I read the boxes! Maybe the best game of Willy's career.
I don't usually get involved in these reffing disputes as they tend to even out over time, but this one isn't really about a bad call per se. The refs need to explain why it was an even up on Bunting.....then suddenly not?
I've watched a lot of hockey in my 68 years and that is the most bizarre sequence of calls I've ever witnessed. The League and Officials Association need to send that crew back to do about 20 AHL/OHL games when they're done that and they grade at A level then they can come back but no playoffs for them this year. That was a totally egregious display of what can only be called amateur level management.

This might be one of the “quietest” 5 point nights I’ve ever seen

Funnily enough, nylander looked more deserving of 5 points the game against the kings.

Not to take anything away from him, he was awesome, but both his goals, or at least the first one should’ve been stopped. Either way good for him, and he’s pacing for 94 points

Not bad for $7 million

Damn you're absolutely relentless

Also Leafs seem to have gotten a bunch of people worked up over power plays tonight  The Bruins out of town thread was pure comedy, those guys have no self awareness.
While some posters here are complaining that the refs were against us.

Hey its a legit stat. We are also doing well without jarnkrok right? People can read into the stat how they want or find other stats, but I think its worth mentioning considering most would have thought the leafs would be going off a cliff without you know who. Obviously they didn’t and I have my opinions as to why they haven’t

Wait we can win in OT??

Also lol for start kampf with Liljegren and sandin
There will be some folks on here thinking that all the complaining they did about starting Matty, Mitch etal prompted the coaching staff to do that. that's the funniest part.

Which brings me to my 3 Stars

1st Star
The Man Beast himself at maximum tumescence , Willy NY the 5 point guy. He looked bigger than he's ever looked, faster and more committed then I've ever seen him. Keep it up Will, 90 points isn't that far away!

2nd Star
Big Mike himself, the buntster, the BuntMan just bunting around! He seems to have found a new gear, I don't believe he lost one race last night, and when he tied and had to battle for the puck I'd say he came away with it an easy 75% of the time. He has really stepped it up since he got that semi demotion. In his last 15 games 3G and 11A and the Leafs really need that production, they also need that nasty streak he has inside him that he can push into the badlands of dirty occasionally.

3rd Star
Mitch and his 22 game streak, Matthews with another multi point night and now nipping at Mitch' heels and who seems to just now be hitting his stride!
.......and as a little bonus right now 37/8 is playing a mature game like a top pair level! With all of 117 NHL games under his belt. Sandman is an excellent partner to Liljegren they compliment each other and seem to know what the other is thinking. hey are elevating each other, each pulling the other up the hill. I'm not going to sit here and try to convince anybody they're the best pair in the division, because they're not, but if they keep improving, keep staying at home clearing the blue paint when they need to and keep adding a little more offence they'll rise to the top and be the Leafs 1/2 of the future and when I say future I mean future that like objects in a rearview mirror apeear closer then they seem, that kind of near future.

Dirty Murr wasn't feeling the puck like he normally seems to, but he pulled a Grant Fuhr and kept the last shot out and kept the Leafs in it for the W.

Things I learned today! JT is not an 11m dollar player anymore, so what I believe I can assume about that, is that he, being a a fine leader and honourable man and a great Toronto Maple Leafs captain, must've taken a paycut.

William is probably one of the best talents Sweden ever had all time but he is still only the third or fourth most popular player in Toronto. :sarcasm: When playing for Sweden he is our biggest star, it's him and Zibanejad but I would say that William is the most popular player. Not being the one in Toronto is probably good for him, less pressure.

The competition is very tough in Toronto and this is one of the best teams in the NHL right now for sure.

I'm not suggesting I want it to end as I enjoy a good story and active record, so I'm always hopig each game that Marner keeps building history. Much like Matthews pursuit of 60 last year however, I feel individual pursuits, conscious or not; can impact the goal of the team.

It can invite bad habits when his teammates know he is on a record hunt.

Tonight for instance, I saw Marner hold the puck in some spots he should just dump it in. He was not doing this much this year but he did tonight and it ended in plays the other way. Staying in character all season with an eye on the playoffs is more important than ANY individual record.

Keep the streak going but remain loyal to the process that will hopefully pay dividends this postseason.

What? I don’t think it’s really affecting them. I think he’s obviously conscious about it and so is the team. But they are playing loose. With Marner you’re going to get turn overs it’s something we just have to accept, hes not Marner if he’s not trying to create and at times he might f*** up. But he’s going to give you a ton of special moments as well.

I believe he is talking about Rielly..

Ah interesting. Well having Rielly will def make our dcore better. Gio looks like he could use a night off soon haha

By FAR Matt Murray's worst game as a leaf, 2 of those goals can't go in, the 3rd and 4th goal can't go in, especially the 4th.

But he still finds a way to win because he is Matt Murray and he does Matt Murray things

Last nights game felt like both teams had somewhere else better to be. The give a shit level for both teams was at an all time low. It was a choppy, poorly played game by both teams. Compared to the Leafs two previous games, it looked like we had two different Leafs teams playing. We won but man it was ugly. Ugly win or pretty win they both count for the same amount of points. I can't imagine Keefe is happy with that game.

I think a lot of credit needs to go to Liljegren and Sandin. Both have been absolute insane since Muzzin/Rielly and Brodie (now returned) got injured. Justin Holl stepped up his play as well

He was a ppg center on the Isles devoid of any talent and has pretty much been at best the same if not worse with significantly better forwards supporting him.
He's generally had one better player and one worse player on his wing compared to his time with the Islanders, and while he's played with better players on the PP over the past couple years, he also doesn't have the PP run through him anymore like he did on the Isles. And he's not been worse. Despite moving further out of his prime, his 5v5 P/60 increased from 2.07 in his last 4 years with the Isles, to 2.26 with the Leafs. On the PP, he's gone from 5.57 P/60 to 6.27 with the Leafs. He's just playing less, because he's not the primary option anymore.
Think about how different this offence would look if you replaced him with a similar highly paid player like Panarin, Kane or Eichel. Those guys produce no matter what.
Well, putting aside the fact that you can't just pick and choose which elite players you want... Eichel has a whole 1 point more than Tavares, and Kane has 8 less points, for the record. Heck, even Panarin (who makes even more than Tavares) was basically PPG until a hot streak over the past few games.

I agree he is an amazing talent but I challenge your statement that he's one of the best all time from Sweden, he's not even in the top twenty that I can think of and he may not be in the top 50. Sweden has a pretty rich hockey history. He may be in the top 20 by the time he ends his career but part of greatness is duration.
