Well better goaltending too really. We actually weren’t a bad defensive team at all even in the playoffs.

We weren’t, but how much offense did we sacrifice to ensure we stayed that buckled up. Our defensive results were greater than the sum of our defensive parts to be honest.

this is what i gleaned.
going with the whole: Toronto Matters Mantra.

Hiller fits that bill.
1: he's been here before. the landscape has changed a lot but he's familiar witht he city, the organization and. OH NO, THE MEDIA [lol his wife heh]. he clearly built up some memories here. his thing with Cliff etc came to mind.

2: some of the important players [like them or hate them]. are familiar with them. now they were familiar with him when they were 18 and now they're 28 so things have been different.

3: it sounds like he's not dedicated to a system. he'll adapt when needed. [now will this stick? who knows].

4: it sounds like he's really open minded to analalytical information so that works with what Chundin wants to do. so there could/should be some cohesiveness.

my thing had always been I really want the Leafs to start cultivating a Popovich/Carolina programme. like you establish something and it's it and if you don't work it you're gone. I don't know if Hiller is that person. but he COULD BE, and that works for me.

my HOPE is they do bring Palveski in if they can bring Ahokas into the fold in some capacity too - that would also be great.

i like how. no one saw this coming. we're back to the Cone of Silence and I like it very much

After a game our D core goes to... Rehab, or Old age home, or the other rehab on an island. The animated corpse of Reilly ain't getting us a cup.

I’m banking on moves this offseason to improve the D. But also the age of our D is generally overstated, aside from Tanev. And the way we played set up that entire group to fail.

There is a lot of hopium about all of this. Granted if he nails a few big trades and changes the dynamic of the team, that's would be great.

I think Hiller is the Life Coach that will make players want to win for a horrible boss like MLSE.

All the failures previously aren’t relevant

This is the best the Toronto Maple Leafs can do? John Chayka and Jim Hiller?

I've kinda been over it for a long time now. I wanted to see the Leafs win a cup before my old man passed, but that didn't happen. So these last few years I've just sorta been hanging around hoping to see some positive direction. It's hard to even care anymore.

Oh well. Hopefully they find some success with this group. I have no more emotion to invest in it.

What I like about both the GM and coach hire is my lack of like for any of it. Considering how many times I been excited about a hire only to find out it was nothing to be excited about perhaps this time we get it right. If so I kind of like it and is a bit excited. So that probably means this goes tit up.

I really don’t know what people expect anymore, especially over the last 20 years… we’ve had the full spectrum of people with experience and success (Babcock, Lou, Carlyle, Burke) little to no experience (Dubas, Keefe, Nonis, Horachek)… and the results haven’t been consistent one way or the other

We have seen success in other teams with a wide spectrum of experiences in that time.

It’s ridiculous to speak in absolutes at this point

Anyone else think this was Captain America’s call all along?
Cynically, I'm pretty sure a lot of these decisions are to appease Matthews. I don't think it's necessarily Hiller himself, but more that they are hiring a guy whose mandate will be to play a style that prioritizes Matthews rather than the team.

Who? Why don't I know any of these coaches?

Since Chayka said their team spoke with people at different levels to learn more about each coach’s character, my sense is that Cassidy may not have passed that background check, and that this was likely one of the reasons they didn’t choose him.

Yeah I don’t think that’s at all what’s happening
