Are people being negative bc they didn’t see Hiller as a candidate or Hiller is a horrible coach or Leafs didn’t get the guy they prefer?
I don’t know about others but for me it really doesn’t matter who the coach is when you don’t believe in the core.
Every new GM and coach comes in with good intentions. They start with the standard press conference and small moves that look decent but eventually they need to become bigger and then bigger goes bad. I’m really hoping that this cycle can be broken and it’s the GM over the coach that I’m more concerned with. For now the choice is fine. To be continued…

One thing people have not really talked about is the familiarity Hiller has with Matthews and Nylander.

Without a doubt, Chayka did his homework and spoke to both those players about Hiller and both clearly had positive things to say if he ended up getting hired.

Right off the bat, we have someone Matthews and Nylander WANT behind the bench. There will be no excuses for either of them this season.

Doesn’t it make you question the chain of events from 2023? That was the style they felt they could have the most success in and they moved away from it and now they are going back

Puck possession is what wins. Look at Carolina. That's the best puck possession team in the NHL and that team went 16-3 in the playoffs.

You don't win anything being outshot on a regular basis.

I don't know how Toronto will do under Hiller. I don't know if the players will be able to play his 1-3-1 well or if he'll have them play a different system.

But if he can make them as good analytically as the Kings were under him, I'll be happy. I do think old age (for core players) was a big part of the reason the Kings kept losing to the Oilers in the playoffs. Guys like Kopitar would be gassed by the last two or three games, and McDavid would eat them up. At least he'll have a younger 1C here.

Having familairty with a few of the players and experience navigating the Toronto media is a positive.

Nothing changes without change, putting lipstick on a pig might fool some people, but it won’t change what’s always been the problem with this iteration of the Leafs. I expect nothing so I won’t be disappointed.

Not really. You just convinced yourself that the Leafs hired Cassidy

It's going to be an adventure. I don't trust young kids or learn on the job types with pro level hockey teams and neither should you tbh. They are all green.

Pretty much. Maybe the new coach comes in and they start looking better under a different system. Some guys might even enjoy a return or increase in numbers. But at the end of the day, no coach or GM is going to make guys who don’t grind it out, push back and stick up for someone, win board battles, take hits to make plays, battle with intensity any different.

I wanted a coach my favourites were Ahokas Donskov and Carle. We got Hillier he has some experience.

I think it's pretty clear this team has a budget on executives. Don't think Cassidy was ever an option. With that said though, I don't know why Woodcroft was never part of the "extensive" search.

Agreed.
I at least like where he said they will have fun playing the system.
Any coach can have their systems, but the system has to somewhat fit the players on the team, not "pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence" then try to find players over time that fit that mold. We already have 2 of the most elite snipers in the game... they need to be somewhat unleashed and find their scoring again. Get Knies going again, hope Cowan takes a step, and add in McKenna and we have a good top 6 (with Tavares at worst hopefully a better option comes in) that can score they just need to enjoy the game again and get flying. I remember one Leafs broadcast where they cut to the bench after a Leaf goal and one of the assistants jumped and pumped a fist and Berube just stared him down to calm down. I get being calm and collected but you have to have good energy as well we seem to have missed that the past few years.

has already coached some current leafs, has recent head coach experience, and his teams had good records...i mean i cant name one other coach with this on their resume, so the higher wasn't crazy or out of nowhere at all, it was actually pretty straight forward thinking

Not into him that much, but with the right GM and Roster tweaks he was the best coach available.
You know shit about Cassidy lol, you're just being a contrarion as usual to pretend like you're smarter than everyone when nobody actually cares. The fact is Cassidy was blessed with two elite lineups on two different teams in a short window and managed to get himself shown the door way earlier than those rosters and his success would typically dictate. Why would anyone looking for long-term growth want to hire a guy with a shelf life? Makes sense Edmonton was after him.

"If the right GM and roster tweaks were in place he was the best coach available". Youre essentially saying that if you gift him an elite team like VGK you'd get an awesome coach. That's crazy! Who would believe that?

here is teh Q&A if someone interested or has already gone through then disregard

Definitely not a hire I expected. Wasn't a fan of the King's performance but at the same time, the Kings didnt have the offensive fire power we do

Gonna wait and see how this plays out

That top defensive system in LA was and is Daryl Sutters system. Every coach after Sutter in LA kept using it. So you cannot give Hiller credit for it. As a Kings fan what happened under Hiller is that our offense got worse. Yes LA wasn't loaded with offensive talent. But we have Kempe, Fiala, Kopitar and QB number one pick that Hiller failed to develop into the player he is capable of being and some oher young talent, but LA'S offense dropped even further under Hiller and our PP did too. Not a fan of Hiller and it is the same old song and dance in Toronto even with new managment. wish you all the best of luck.
So he was forced to run a system that's not his and you blame him for the team not being better offensively?

That was a good introductory presser. I liked what both John and Jim had to say and how they said it. Will be interesting how they build out the team and what their ceiling is.

Will also be interesting who the assistant coaches are.

I don't know if it is the right hire, but I am happy to cheer for him to have maximum success!
