Right, so as many surmised Toronto did interview Cassidy during the playoffs, and they obviously decided that Hiller would be a better fit for them. I can't begrudge that, even if Cassidy might objectively be a better coach.

Probably selected because we are in a state of flux, but you have to wonder if Toronto has limited its access to strong candidates, who arn't interested in joining a Chayka program.

Perhaps that doesn't extend too much to players in FA...

11th hour change of plans. The riverboat is alive and well the gamblers are all aboard.

What's with all the hate around this hiring??? By all accounts he had the Kings punching well above their weight. He actually ran a very effective PP here in Toronto too not long ago.

Are people seriously that obsessed to see another dinosaur hiring in here? This was a horrible move with Berube, I'm glad they're not making the same mistake again.

1)This years performance by Vegas was overall below expectations under Cassidy
2) I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto wants to stay far away from any association with Marner. We'd probably hear a Marner question weekly directed at Cassidy.
3) Vegas players complimenting Torts and indicating he was what they needed isnt a good look for Cassidy. He certainly didnt seem missed.
4) He isnt a players coach and is generally disliked by his players. Leafs need some positivity around the team.

Just another Leafs gamble. Just like when Knies gets shipped and we get some random mix and match team makeup that can't break out and go on a run.

Maybe I am wrong. Hope I am wrong. Certainly not a fan of Chayka

Who said Hiller owned an analytics company? Lol

He admitted to knowing nothing about analytics in his interview but said he is open to it. Seems like even reporters thought he had a background in with it.

If this is true this has to be the most totally random hire I've ever seen after all the names that have been mentioned.

I hadn't even heard this guys name brought up once.
It took them 55+ interviews to finally discover their #1 choice?

got it

A player mutiny with 8 games to go?

I guess you put it on your Resume with a size 3 font size?

Once again, why should I believe any of this?
No one Kyper included had Hiller as our next coach. No one had him on our short list or among the 25 candidates they talked seriously with. Hell no one even had him as one of the 50+ guys they contacted at all.

Not that I wanted Cassidy but none of these “insiders” have any idea what this front office group is doing.

What's the hate surrounding this mediocre coach that has done nothing except cost his team playoff series, I just don't get it. 55 coaching interviews and this was the best option? Maybe don't lie about the 55 interviews next time and you won't look so stupid.

Has he won a round?

57 year-old coach has to answer to the 37-year old GM- yeah that's gonna work

This is honest to god the JFJ years starting all over again. I totally hear it in Chayka's interviews, too- he can't go more than 3 or 4 words without a huge "uuuumm" and talks in chopped, fake corporate jargon, similarly to how this new coach sounds as well. Sounds like a robot. To be honest he's a blend of JFJ and Dubas

Not off to a good start here. First it was the Sundin/Chayka hiring which left everyone scratching their heads and now this.

McKenna has distracted from all of it though, good job NHL for calming the waters otherwise it would be lights out here in T.O. lol

You're usually on the money with this stuff. You know it's going to end up the way you think it will end up. Chayka out - Leafs still in Cup drought.

If this entered anyone's mind during the coaching search, they should be fired tonight, without any question.
Again, there is a list of reasons, but I do think it contributes to it and you cherry picked one of my reasons out of a list I made and deleted the rest of my post lol. Its called a strawman. Next time just highlight the one bullet instead of deleting the rest of my post.

I think it is one of many reasons (as listed) why Cassidy wasnt chosen. If you didnt notice, Leafs were more than tired of talking about Marner last year. I dont think Leafs are looking to give reporters a reason to bring him up even more next year. Leafs need a culture change and a fresh start.
