...and all we gave up was picks?

dang. what a night for the Leafs. Sounds like a major breakthrough.

Just when all of us here have been screaming that we have no sandapaper, Dubas goes out and gets us sandpaper.

I swear he must read HFBoards ;)

wow I'M STOKED

OH HEAR YE HEAR YE, THE LEAFS SHALL GOLEAFS GO

I've been writing to acquire O'Reilly for about 2 months now and I'm happy with the price as we got massive retention, kept Knies and our top prospects and got Acciari. You never know how 1st round picks will turn out but it should be a later pick and the Leafs are in win now mode so it makes sense. Seems like we gave up quantity not quality except for potentially the 1st. ROR is the big body we need. He can also play 2 LW with either Matthews or Tavares if we want to load up the top 6.

Mmm yes, so basically a day-to-day HBoards and Twitter experience?

I've sat next to Blues scouts in Hamilton watching the Bulldogs/Greyhounds and they opened my eyes to a few things they look for and monitor during a game (at least at that age). Coincidentally that same game I met Dubas who was in the next section over. Good guy, made quick small-talk, we were both high on Nylander making the Leafs as soon as possible

Always thought it'd be a nice thing for someone to release a free-app for scouting/team-data but those that require actual eyes to tabulate..

Something that any minor hockey coach could assign to a parent in the stands while they work the bench.

Wouldn't that be cool?

Precisely. People who don't want to sit in the rink, or on their couch, just read other peoples opinions and form them as their own.

Oh damn! Up in First Ontario? Those are brutal rails up top... I worked for the Bulldogs for the 2016/2017 season, and I hated (like HATED) going into the press boxes because of my fear of heights. Most scouts and GM's are pretty good guys as long as you stay in your lane.

It's a dicey situation; there is a market there, ISS has quite a bit of that cornered in terms of easy exposure access (though there is a big discussion as to how much that works).

The idea is cool, but the reality is that from a scouting perspective, even OHL teams are looking straight at their own guys for the majority of their picks. It's when they get into the 12th-15th rounds, they're willing to listen to 3rd parties, and there are guys who have made their careers that way. I scouted for a USHL team whose GM was a real good OHL player who legitimized himself by nailing a late pick - his chair moved from the back to the front in 12 months at the draft table.

Scouting is such a messy business. It's why I laugh my ass off when I see idiots on this board squawking about 14 year olds who are potential 1st round picks in 4 years. Like.... FFS... LOL

I haven't been paying attention this year.

So is Samsonov the dude they're rolling with for the playoffs? LOL.

Yet another bad faith argument!

Not really, Knies is likely able to step in at a competitive level by the the end of the season. It's a completely different situation from picks that are likely multiple years away from being able to contribute (if the team is lucky) Then again, you likely already know this ;)

So 2nd round picks, like Knies, are only valuable after we pick them?

Why not before?

I thought Dubas was a master-class in drafting in scouting?

He's taking that avenue away from himself to rent a player?!

I don't understand why picks are only valuable for you until after-the-fact?

Why can't you trust Dubas to hand us another Knies? Another Lilligren? Another Sandin?

The sorts of players we now need and are actually relying on to fill out the roster cheaply, and with some upside and extra boost for the big-roster?

You seem to like it both ways, whichever the Leafs GM happens to go with,,,,

If they want to load up the top 6, O'Reilly could really take it to the next level.

O'Reilly-Matthews-Nylander
Bunting-Tavares-Marner
Engvall-Holmberg-Jarnkrok

Tampa’s 3rd line is the depth that we didn’t have last year and is a big reason we why we lost to them. They don’t seem to worry about draft picks because they care about winning more. This trade makes the 3rd line much better and that’s where series are won quite often I think. Imho when you’re close you do whatever you can to win. Draft picks won’t help us in the playoffs this year. Unfortunately this team could look much different in 2 years so get her done while the core is here
Not true Tampa has had a 1st round pick 20 plus years straight, meanwhile since we gave up this year’s we will have had 1 in the last 5 drafts…

Getting O’reilly is a big boost to the team. I’m not sure if Dubas has many more moves left but I’m pumped after this move!! Let’s go!!

Anyone that’s going to help out this team before all of Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares’ contracts expire is already in the system, whoever you draft this year won’t be a factor until 2025 at the earliest. The only problem with giving up the picks is that next year would have been a better all-in year with Boston and Tampa getting older and running thin on resources to use at the deadline.

I spent some time with one of the Steadmans and I saw how the London way of things went, I get it for sure. Dale is an amazing guy but I am still scared of him to this day lol.

There's a way of breaking down hockey into simple segments that regardless of who you know, where you came from, how much you think you know, it's just the game itself. Possession-positive, skill-events whether it be offensively/defensively/goaltending, and sometimes character-showing moments of physicality and emotion (god fobid in this day and age)...

That's all it comes down to at the end of the day.

Fundamentally, regardless of if it's the eye test or the analytics, it comes down to forecasting. And forecasting is all about controlling (to the best of your abilities) as many variables as possible. And each variable is subject to its own variables, and thus you need to learn not to major on the minors.

I sat next to the London guys at a few tournaments, mostly the Dufton tournament in London.

Most impressive takeaway was how Dale Hunter can have huge conversations during a game where it's not like he's paying attention, but then he'll break down a play in granular detail like he was analyzing it with a microscope.

It’s like people think he’s our 1C.

He’s our 3C. He will be fine, he doesn’t need to be a high flying speedster. Play him with responsible wingers, and that will be a highly effective line.

I thought he didn't want to part with a 1st for a rental? I like that add, I just hope there is a reasonably priced extension coming.
He added two rentals! ;)

I'm hoping for that upcoming, reasonably priced extension as well.
