Just looking at some of the reactions on the trade... here's sids... f***ing guy....

Yup -24 but first line c on not a great team.

I don't think he watches much hockey other than band wagon.

He consistently proves that he knows nothing about hockey. He thinks he's still relevant in sports but consistently turns out terrible opinions and statements.

I like Sid, but FFS, you'd think the guy understood the game of hockey for a few minutes.

He analyzes hockey like it's tennis. And I love tennis.

I have mixed feelings on this.

I can see the Foligno comparisons, but as someone who did not the like the Foligno trade when it was made, I have more confidence in ROR. He's coming off a different injury (foot concerns me less than a shoulder) and was a far better player at his peak.

Our centre depth is now fantastic: Matthews/Tavares/ROR all bring size, scoring touch, and are responsible defensively. They're going to be very difficult to handle as a trio. Add in Kampf as 4C and Keefe can roll four lines without worry.

Where I am skeptical is the cost v. benefit. Is this team good enough with ROR to go all the way? Right now, I'm not certain. Our D is objectively good but also error-prone, the types of errors that could cost us a series. Samsonov has been fantastic this year, but whether that carries into the playoffs is an open question. We still seem to lack scoring depth, especially at 2LW. And most of all, we're likely going to have to go through Tampa and then Boston.

Odds are we are out in the 1st or 2nd round and that makes emptying the draft pick cupboard a risky move. But that is what contending teams do.

All in all, I don't love it but I can accept it, seeing as this is probably the last hurrah for this group. I would have preferred Meier though (RFA status + bigger impact, IMO).

I would move Tavares to the wing, assuming O'Reilly's put on the second line or move Bunting to the second line and put him with Matthews and Marner.

It's a risky trade, with O'Reilly having injury history and both O'Reilly and Acciari being rentals, but it adresses IMO 2/3 of our problems: grit/size and winning DNA/clutch. If I were Dubas I might as well go all in and get a d-man.

I hate Kyle Dubas.

I had it similar but:

Holmberg - ROR - Jarnkrok
Engvall - Kampf - Acciari

I don’t think anyone can justify sitting Holmberg for ZAR
I do. Holmberg is waiver exempt. ZAR isn't. You can bury Holmberg until the playoffs. Not sure ZAR would be taken but Holmburg going to the Marlies makes certain he isn't. However, ZAR or Benn may get exposed when they add a physical dman. With the salary retention in this deal, there is another deal more likely.

Would rather waive ZAR than send Holmberg down. He's been a breath of fresh air.

Totally different animal ultimately; what I will say is the key is balancing one with the other. Anyone who strays too far to either side misses the big picture.

Plus, on the hockey side, you get a bunch of wingnuts who don't understand how proper analytics and quantitiative analysis works but just parrot websites without understanding the math behind it.

Mmm yes, so basically a day-to-day HBoards and Twitter experience?

I've sat next to Blues scouts in Hamilton watching the Bulldogs/Greyhounds and they opened my eyes to a few things they look for and monitor during a game (at least at that age). Coincidentally that same game I met Dubas who was in the next section over. Good guy, made quick small-talk, we were both high on Nylander making the Leafs as soon as possible

Always thought it'd be a nice thing for someone to release a free-app for scouting/team-data but those that require actual eyes to tabulate..

Something that any minor hockey coach could assign to a parent in the stands while they work the bench.

Wouldn't that be cool?

I think ideally 1 more trade is made with Kerfoot + Prospect being the main piece for a Lw such as Kane. Now look:

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Kane-Tavares-Marner
Engvall-ROR-Jarnkrok
ZAR-Kampf-Acciari

Doesn't get much better than that.
Yes it does

Bunting matthews kane
Janrok tavares nylander
Knies ror marner
Engval kampf acciari

dont know a thing about any of these new players.

are these "character" type of players? Guys with a personality that wants to win?

Like grinder, heart and soul type of guys? You know, Roberts/Tucker/Gilmour/Clark types?

talent is one thing we have an abundance of.

But character, grit and sandpaper is something we have nothing of.

Are these new players those type of guys?

Yes.

Tampa’s 3rd line is the depth that we didn’t have last year and is a big reason we why we lost to them. They don’t seem to worry about draft picks because they care about winning more. This trade makes the 3rd line much better and that’s where series are won quite often I think. Imho when you’re close you do whatever you can to win. Draft picks won’t help us in the playoffs this year. Unfortunately this team could look much different in 2 years so get her done while the core is here

Might not mean a whole lot, but what I like a lot about this deal is it gives the Leafs a leader who is very intense. Leafs leadership core seems to be more laid back in their role and not as "in your face" as the likes of a Mackinnon for example.

ROR absolutely hates to lose and makes it well known
There's honestly no such thing as having too much leadership, especially from a guy who can back it up with his play and has led his team to a cup. As you said, sometimes it's nice to have a guy who can fire everyone up

Then we should trade Knies away for a defenceman or Kane?

He's no good to us either?
!

Not really, Knies is likely able to step in at a competitive level by the the end of the season. It's a completely different situation from picks that are likely multiple years away from being able to contribute (if the team is lucky) Then again, you likely already know this ;)

It'd be tough to find players who better fit this profile than ROR and Acciari

Good pickup. Who cares what his plus minus is... hes a guy who throughout his entire career who delivers in the playoffs. P Kane is a minus 27...and is 3 years older and nobody seems to care much.

This is the important part. It's nice having Spezza or Gio as leaders and players willing to step up, but they're the oldest players in the league lol. You need someone who is a key contributor leading the charge
