I always wondered why people don't rush to defend Keefe at the same frequency as before. Glancing moneypuck for 5v5 ice time (playoffs) leaders among D has solved that mystery

They let you get away with Engvall if you let them get away with Boosh

I know you're just trying to ease the tension and be funny, but it is a bit horrifying knowing how much importance Engvall and Boosh had on 5v5 play. Even if you logically and correctly show why it was divided like that, the question remains, is that really the army you want as leaders 5v5 regardless? Especially against the back to back champs?

Not looking to cause a Keefe thread to emerge, so I will leave it as open ended question for people to ponder privately in their head.

I get playing Engvall that much if it's a speed line with Mikheyev and it's being specifically used to exploit a slow D pairing or to keep a scoring line playing scared in our zone from the breakaway threats. If it's just Engvall on a regular line then he shouldn't be playing that much unless he's having one of his rare games when he's completely dialed in.

Re the embellishmen: the Habs ran a pick play at the Leafs blueline on a rush when they already had an extra skater due to a delayed penalty. It really was a clear case of interference anyways but I guess Marner decided to help the refs to make the right decision by falling over rather easily. It was a bit iffy, in my judgment but, hey, I’m a Leaf’s fan.
The habs player barely, if he even did, touch Marner, that was clear dive.

IMO, Robertson gets the nod over Malgin. He’s put on some much needed weight so maybe he won’t get chucked around like before, and he has an upper echelon NHL shot. They‘ll need scoring while Tavares is out.

While Tavares is out... there is room for both. It's really after Tavares comes back that they need to choose between these two.

I'm in the keep Malgin over Robertson camp. Painful as it is not to reward the kid outright after a strong preseason, some practicality needs to factor in here. We can have one of them if we keep Robertson, or both if we show a little patience and wait for an innevitable injury. Nick will understand, and at the end of the day he'll still go back to the Marlies feeling very relieved and confident after showing his worth at this level. It won't be a long wait.

How is it, players "like" Malgin don't get us there?

I mean, he was what... second in scoring in the playoffs last year in the NL, followed by being tops on the Swiss team at the World Championship, out scoring Hischier by 50%, Suter and Meier too. Second highest PPG in the World Championship as well. Are you suggesting he's not a playoff, or big game performer?

Based on what?
Curious as to why he was playing overseas instead of the NHL last year

Curious as to why he was playing overseas instead of the NHL last year

Because that was best for his development, so that he could succeed in the NHL when he came back... the same as why any other players would play in a league not named the NHL, with the hope of getting there. The same reason that players are in the AHL, why Nylander played in the SHL, etc....

Except for the fact Malgin's still only 25, and he was 23 when he left the NHL to play the last 2 seasons in Switzerland.

Fun fact, he led the Swiss in each category with 5G, 7A, and 12 points in the World Championships for the only unbeaten team in the round robin, 4 points clear of Timo Meier, Nico Hischier, and Pius Suter......all NHL regulars.

He's an NHL player, he was an NHL player, and he's better than he was before. Time to stop giving away players that go on to have success elsewhere. The Leafs need depth, and depth scoring. Showing chemistry with top-6 players is what the Leafs have been missing. We can't count on Robertson either, as he's had a major injury each of the past 2 seasons.

Tough call but as I hear it.....Keefe is very non-committal on Robertson, which is exactly as he should be. The posters on here are swooning over 2 preseason games by Robertson while simultaneously saying about Malgin's scoring that "it's only preseason games, and he is what he is". Truth is, without giving Malgin a shot, we have no idea what he is.....the only thing we know is that he's not the 8 game sample size of when he played here before. Plus Malgin is a more complete forward at this point.
If he was an NHL player why did he have to go to Switzerland to play instead of actually playing in the NHL

I understand that position but some here are touting all his accolades while playing overseas and a few tournament. some are even claiming he was an NHL player before he left for overseas. If that was the case wouldn’t you think his development would have been better served playing in the actual NHL instead of inferior leagues

I would really like it if management would select the best of the 2 based on merit, not just because one is waiver eligible and one is not. I don’t see any world where they pick Robertson over Malgin on that fact alone.

5 on 5 21/22 playoffs. Check.

Just use NHL.com which 100% has better tracking for something like TOI, he is 5th.

edit: saw the posts saying 5v5 vs EV, kind of misleading to only us 5v5.

Screen Shot 2022-10-04 at 1.54.36 PM.png

Hoglund is correct engvall had the 2nd most 5v5 time.

But 5th most EV time.

So kind of a cherry-picked stat and misleading is all.

He was a NHL player before he left. He's played 192 NHL games....

He was traded to the Leafs. He wasn't going to get very good minutes with the Leafs, and they agreed to Loan him, to play in the NL, as the Leafs agreed that was best for eventually getting the best out of him. He was too far down the depth charts at that point. An offensive player, playing on the 4th line of the Leafs isn't going to develop offensively.

In the end, who cares what the path is... the result is what counts. If he doesn't make it on the Leafs, he will end up being a contributor elsewhere.

Soooo here’s the deal …
Right off the hop , I want to say , I have nothing at all against Malgin as a person or player .
He seems like a “lovely chap “ and possibly a great humanitarian one day and takes care of giraffes on the weekends ……..in a “Groucho “ voice for those over 60 …
Anyhowwww.. all kidding aside
This kid looks like a fine player and has a terrific offensive skill level and have competed semi regularly.
Again nothing against him , no need to have a referendum on the topic and player … it’s alllllll good .
I’m happy for Mr Malgin for having these lofty career years in these exotic rinks all over the world ..
30 plus NHL Professional Hockey Teams in the best League in the world , with the best Professional Hockey players On them , with sone of tbd brightest hockey minds running them and with the most $$$$$ to back them would probably have spent almost nothing to pick him up somehow many times and didn’t .
The fact is that we are going to make the playoffs Should be in the top 5 in terms of points and all the good categories that we are usually good at ..and that our core players are going to continue to get better and Set more historic Leaf team records and we are , also guess what ? Have sone dips in our game and our goalies will become Peter Ing and fill in the blank for all the rest on that giant scrap heap pile of horrible tenders of the past .
So here’s the rub …let’s all get close now with big ears !!!!
WE DONT NEED PLAYERS like Malgin and his skill set in the playoffs , cuz our team has proven over and over and over that to win S Cups and with our shameful abundance of offensive wealth wothin our core offensive players , and knowing that they are at the pinnacle of their careers .
As a compliment it all ….!
We require ! Size , speed , tenacity , youthful energetic hungry shitty attitude type players , snd get this Ones that score on occasion and that aren’t rock heads or being in the twilight of their careers .
Are we not there yet as a fan base ?
Wow I thought we were passed that stage after these 1st round agonizing defeats year after year …
Cmon , we are better that this Leafs Nation
We don’t need this anymore
Let’s act like we’ve been there before !
We are a awesome team with tremendous completion now , let’s not settle for hopes and dreams any longer .
This isn’t about Malgin !!!!
Its about other tools in the box that are required now ..
Big Boy pants now !
Go Leafs Go…

PS disclaimer ……..
I look forward to your well thought out response if your so inclined…
But “Jerry I’m old “ and don’t have the desire or time or energy and also I’m probably too high to get into any back and forth cuz by that time , I would probably have forgotten why I’m discussing A player like Malgin

First, I don't really care too much about Malgin... I think Robertson is better now, and has more upside to come. I hope Knies joins us after his season, and brings yet another element.

But what we need, are good players, who raise their games at important times. Malgin is a player that seems to do that... but I don't think it matters, as I don't see him on this team come the playoffs... maybe I'm wrong, and somehow he replaces Kerfoot who is moved out... and if that happens, I'm ok with that too.

We need good players... who play hard offensively, and defensively.... Malgin isn't bad at that. He's got decent speed, tenacity and a great work effort. What he doesn't have... is size.

Of course the guy who likely gets that long-term spot... is Robertson, who also doesn't have size. So, that part of the argument kind of falls out.

We need better goaltending in the playoffs... this year it was 0.897. We need better puck protection... two goals in game six were bad passes, bad giveaways, followed by weak goaltending. We need better defensive play. Colorado wasn't a big bad team, and they just won the cup. We are likely going to be a more physical team this year, and that's a positive. Neither Malgin, nor Robertson really factor in there though... but I was impressed with Robertson's board work, and willingness to go there. Let's hope he can have some success once regular NHL starts up in those spots.

Do I think we need more physicality on the back end... yes, absolutely.. but Malgin is irrelevant to that conversation.

I see a guy who raises his game when it counts, and that is what matters the most... the will to win. I don't think we've had enough of that will to win, when it really counts. More of that is good. Of course if Malgin was 6'2" 210 lbs, and could do the things he does now... ya, that would be great.. but those players aren't very common.

We are having a discussion about a guy, who in all probability is wearing a different uniform by 2023... so...

The Leafs lost last season because of poor goaltending and lack of timely secondary scoring. They lost because they needed more production from the bottom 6 to pick up the slack when they clamped down on the top-2 lines, not grittier players who cannot provide any offense.

Gritty players who can play are ideal, but the hierarchy always goes like this.

Gritty players who can provide secondary scoring > Players who can provide secondary scoring > Gritty players.

Malgin is in camp 2, and we have no one right now who fits into camp 1 - perhaps Knies when he arrives.

You can't intimidate, fight, or bodycheck the puck into the net.

Absolutely agree with Gritty young bottom 6 “ that can score “ is what we need
