Confirmed with Link: Leafs extend Keefe

Yes, and if winning in the regular season is all you care about, he is.

I think winning in the playoffs is a far greater indication of success, and he isn't.

And considering the three big scorers he was gifted with, the regular season wins aren't all that impressive either.

Semantics really.

we all knew what he was talking about.

Interesting, could be. On a human level, Dubas is responsible for Keefe's NHL career, it's just natural he would respect Dubas's wishes more than a different coach in the same situation would, despite personally preferring a different style.

Just about the only explanation for why Keefe stayed.
Valid imo
The dubas years can infused me because when shanny stepped in I expected a scrappy team.
Let's see what this year brings

I like Keefe and his system. Got the stars to play better D.

I attribute lack of playoff success more on …players…..refs and just bad luck in meeting top teams from the start.

Keefe like the players will improve and we have some really nice vet assistant coaches.

2 yrs extension is nothing ….gives Keefe some piece of mind and let’s the leafs management the ability to cut their losses easier.

Not really a coach out there I wanted anyways.

My perogative is the TML haven't won a cup since 1967. I don't think there's a single user on this forum that was old enough to remember that. And now they're extending a coach that I don't feel is going to change that, because he hasn't given us so much as a glimpse of promise. All of this WASTED time is at the expense of a core that isn't getting any younger, healthier, cheaper, or more liekable. FIGURE IT OUT. The iron is glowing, and your arguing to keep hammering it with the same clay mallet that has done f all for years now, because maybe it might do it on the next blow.

I hope to God a year from now you're all gloating and throwing this back in my face. Seriously, nothing would make me happier...
Personally I am old enough to remember four Cups for the Leafs, and there are a couple of other posters in a similar situation.

I'm not particularly impressed by Keefe. I think he got badly outcoached in the playoffs, which is when it really matters. To date he hasn't shown the ability to get it done with this group. Having said that, I'm not worried about the contract, as he can be fired at any time.

No brainer.

Don't want Pitt having a bad season and having Keefe to Pitt rumors.
It is only cash, Keefe gets fired if the team fails or there is a better offseason coaching option.

Just sell more $12 pints to pay for the coaches contract.

his waste line certainly has shown growth

I'm dying at this response

Agreed. Those who value playoff success want changes. Those who are content to pay the losers based on regular season performances are as happy as a pig in shit.
You have to be a good regular season team if you want to be a cup champion. The goal is to win the whole thing, and the teams that do routinely finish a top their conference or at least division.

Good move by the Leafs. It puts them in control of the coaching situation for the next three years, which is plenty long enough. Within that time, Keefe's time is done when the Leafs say it's done.

The cost of the contract is inconsequential. It's just the cost of doing business to a business that can well afford it. In fact, it can't afford not to. It gives them power and control.

Yep...I remember the 4 cups also...Born in 52.

mental acumen and ability to coach is up for debate given dubas was a thrash GM meddling in things

Habs overcame 3-1 deficit to win the series with freakin webber coaching and captaining the team.

I am curious as to what external view of Keefe looks like from non-Leafs fans
I actually think that Sheldon should lose some weight and get in shape to help set an example for the team.

Sounds like Treliving and Keefe agreed on how it was Dubas philosophy holding him back…
Let’s see if Keefe is different this year.
I’m excited to see.

I also understand the Peace of mind as well.
Treliving and his people analyzed Keefe and probably realized it wasn’t all on him.

In his press conference, treliving kept saying Keefes relationship with the players…

Perhaps Matthews mentioned a liking to him?
Who knows…

I’m fine with seeing Keefe without Dubas people around and with a tougher squad.
Of course the players love him, he has no backbone and they rule the clubhouse

He tried to call the players out for no show efforts early in the season and gave a groveling media apology a couple days later when the stars told him they didn't appreciate the tone

What do we do if they win though? Will you all suddenly love them then and admit you were wrong?
I will be extremely happy and celebrate how about you

Ya it’s hilarious to even mention that the player love him

Yes, running back the same team and same coach, but switching someone in the press box, that'll yield results.

People wanted Dubas to go for major changes.

The two most significant things that Treliving has done is sign Matthews to a contract that most are saying is too much money and too short and then bring back the coach that everyone thought Dubas would never fire.
I don't think the offseason is over. If Treliving can trade Nylander then the fans will get their blood shed afterall. I think that Dubas/Nylander gone will be very significant.

Neat, ANOTHER year wasted. This core ain't getting any younger, AM's wrist any getting any healthier, JT ain't getting any quicker, and MM ain't asking for any less. The window is OPEN! DO SOMETHING! ANYTHING! This "wait and see" ship has unfurled its sails and is hull up.
I tend to think of this year as a throw away yr while trying to find some fits a F and G while looking to rebuild the D.

Genuinely curious why you think that. You think Dubas made him retract the harsh statements he made a day earlier when Mitch was sounding off on being benched and not caring what anyone says?

If Keefe had the guts to stand behind his criticism of the core players I'd overlook his playoff series record. If he'd bag-skate them when they don't show up for a Tuesday night game against a team like Chicago or Phoenix or Montreal or another terrible team I'd be praising him.

Instead he's afraid of upsetting the core, except for Willy who he gets shat on all the time in the media and gets demoted to PP2 because M&M cant do shit on the PP.

Nevermind his treatment of Liljegren who was humming along playing the best hockey of his career until Keefe started yo-yo-ing his ass in and and of the lineup.

I really hope Keefe is entitled to coach the way he wants now that Dubas is gone, we shall see.
I believe that Dubas did make him retract them. The truth always comes out and they come out the most when you're upset and your guard is down. In those moments Keefe was being himself and then would get called in by Dubas to retract because Kyle was obsessed with making sure everyone liked him in that room. Nothing wrong with that but not with this team... they were treated like children so they remained children. Now my theory will either be proven right or wrong.. We shall see. I just get the sense from his personality and just knowing the type of player he was... he expects more and will call players out.

I think a really telling leadership style of his would be when he was the captain of the barrie colts and he refused to shake the hands of the commissioner and walked out of the banquet. I think he is the type to take a stand, to fight and to call it out as he sees it.

I hope we see the no BS Keefe this year and hold the players to a higher standard.
