There are some that have this weird obsession that everything is Marner vs Nylander. Really weird.
Both can be good, or bad in the same game! And if memory serves, have been!

Nylanders effort per-60 this season has been questionable.

Marner's cute per-60 this season has been evident.

I thought both brought that tonight. They also had some good moments, but not nearly enough.

It’s a loss. They weren’t as bad as some make out. They were clearly the better team for 40 min. But it’s that other 20 that sunk us. We really didn’t get the bounces our way, but the effort was there. I liked the push back when things got physical.

That said, this PP needs to get back to basics and get fixed. This seems like it’s a mental hurdle at this point.

I think that's very accurate.

Typical Woll. He allows a lot of long range goals. St Louis had the book on him. Not good enough. Stolarz is our number 1….period.

The PP, my goodness can they be any more lost. I know with that much skill we should be scoring but this is also a coaching problem.

Exactly, I love Willy but he has some nights where he mails it in. This was one of em.
Lol he was the only 11 million player ACTUALLY creating offense for his teammates. Even on an off day, hes the most talented guy on the ice.

If this team is just using the regular season to get their game plan together for how to win I the playoffs I am a-okay

At least it was somewhat normal of a loss as in you didn’t get the doors blown off and there were some spirited moments but you gotta show up for Chief.
They didn’t for JT

They don’t when playing Boston first time after game 7(s)

They don’t when playing Florida

This team just doesn’t have the mental fortitude it takes to win

Tonight wasn't one of them though. I think a lot of this fanbase throws that accusation around way too often. Same with Mitch to be honest.

About 75% of the games this season, people have accused Nylander of mailing it in. I don't think that's the case.

I think we can all agree. We have too many highly paid forwards. And they don't produce at the salary they're given.

Woll stopped ALOT of point blank shots in the 3rd. He kept us within 1.

I think they were in that second period and the first 10 minutes of the third.

The PP which is supposed to be the spark clearly needs new 'plugs'.

The PP is the killer. I wouldn't be surprised if other teams started taking more liberties with the Leafs knowing that they'll easily kill any penalty as a result.

Maybe its time to finally end the Marner Matthews experiment? Its only been 3 years of mediocrity.

This article is from Nov27 last season:

Matthews has not scored a 5-on-5 goal in the last seven games. Marner has been held off the scoresheet in five of the last seven games. But Toronto's top line has been inconsistent all season.

"I don't think it's the last five or seven games," stressed Keefe. "It's been up and down."

"Too many highs and lows," agreed Matthews. "Just the consistency of putting together shift after shift hasn't been there as much as we wanted."

Keefe has been pushing and prodding Matthews and Marner throughout this rollercoaster run. He even called out the top line behind closed doors following a lacklustre performance against the Detroit Red Wings in Stockholm on Nov. 17.

"It is more so just challenging Auston and Mitch to sort it out and be better," Keefe said of his previous approach.

The group responded well on Nov. 19 during a win over the Minnesota Wild. But then they started slowly in Chicago, which led to another call out from Keefe.

"They have had really big nights and they have had other nights where they haven't been effective at all," Keefe said. "You are just trying to find more consistency there."

"If I knew the exact answer we'd, you know, fix it," Matthews said with a smile after Saturday's loss.

This isn't exactly a new situation. Keefe also split up Matthews and Marner last November, which led to a strong run of form.

Matty captain eh I dunno. Moping around the ice, albeit ripping pucks into the net like an alien, may not be the leadership that works for rest of the team.

It's a few different things. Constantly trying to pass the puck into the net is by far the biggest problem.
Also known as zero-killer-instinct.

While it is apparent on the PP, it shows itself way too often in other aspects of this team.
