Morgan is a Leafs throwback that looks out of place on this team of losers.
No offense, but this team finished in the top 5 of the NHL, they're not losers. You're right that they haven't gone too far in the playoffs. I think they need to trade one of the core 4 and make sure they get good return in addition to adding a couple of grinders with some scoring touch. I know that's difficult, but the window for these players is almost up and that's why at least 1 of them has to go. Also Keefe is gone, there are good available coaches.

At the start of this season I feared the possibility of losing Matthews. At the end of this season if he doesn't want to sign a decent deal then I hope I don't see him ever again.

What a pathetic showing from someone that won the Hart last year. Is this dudes wrists just completely chalked? Good luck to anyone that gives him a ridiculous deal, he's not worth it.
I always got the feeling AM wasn't going to be a Leaf lifer. If he goes I will not be upset, he is injury prone and hits the ice far too often for a big man. The return in him should be substantial at any rate. Those fearing we won't get equal value in a trade may be surprised. You can still get 3 reasonable players back and still come out ahead. Quebec did just that with the Lindros deal.

I Know everyone wants to blow it up…but I can’t visualize a single trade that is going to make the leafs better over the next few years. Outside of moving the impossible Tavares contract major changes are coming but so is a major drop in the standings. See what the next chapter brings. Bring on more pain.
Allow me to ask a dumb question: What good is excelling in the regular season? In a vacuum, what does it really achieve other than seeding (which doesnt matter if you struggle at home)? It didn't do anything for the Bruins this year either.

The goal is to win the cup not make the playoffs each year. Yay they won a round this season. The big 4 disappeared way too often in the 2nd round.
Rome wasn't built in a day.

For years the Leafs struggled to win 4 playoff games in a single season, and this year they won 5 and that only took 7 years to achieve.

You need 16 wins in the playoffs to hoist the Cup so lets do the math at Leafs current pace of progress.

At this point the Toronto Maple Leafs are the Thornton-Marleau era San Jose Sharks, but there are way worse teams to be in a 32 team league.

The other factor to consider is what happens around Toronto in the Atlantic Division. You can be good or bad, but it's relative to the strength of the league and your division.
Its a valid point that many fans fail to consider.

While Leafs continue to spin their wheels and fail to make forward progress the teams in the rearview mirror Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo and all restocking with young high-end talent and each season that gap closes.

As Cup widows close, others are just opening and those teams in the middle that keep stationary year after year will soon get swallowed up by the chase pack, to status quo treading water is not a good position to be in.

I probably won't say much for a bit. Not because I'm that surprised or even that pissed. I just know there will be a lot of hot takes... and that's fine... people need to vent.

Last year I wasn't even that gutted... its just these guys on this team. Change is coming. I'm a pretty big Homer for many players and I don't hate Dubas I think he's decent (don't know what will happen there).... Keefe I'm not sold on now ... its just so obvious in hindsight that this team needs a new voice somewhere. I think the coach goes at a minimum and a core player has too.

It should be Tavares probably but you can't get rid of that now. So Marner... matthews. I like JT and think he's awesome but for 11 million... nope.

Nylander I'd keep funny enough. He'll demand the least and only be 10 points under those guys.

I don't know the solution but change is coming.
Great post, none of it is untrue. Don't be surprised though when William asks for the Pasta contract.

One of the problems I think, is that the team doesn't have a clear voice, an actual leader per se. I think it's why they brought in ROR was solely to give Tavares some support.

Most teams have one captain the Leafs however don't. I respect JT and am aware that ppg players don't grow on trees, but I think there's a faction in the dressing room that don't respect him, that see him as "old."

He's a guy that through no fault of his own is outside of the "fun bunch" because of familial duties and this leaves him little time if any to really be with his teammates. I'm not really sure how anyone can balance the demanding job of being the Captain of the team and having to be a father to 4 kids under 6 and be husband to a woman who seems intent on re-populating the GTA. I mean it's great but maybe his attention is way too divided to keep the room unified.

I always thought pinning the C on him was a mistake, and that it should have been Reilly. Maybe JT can step down, it might be best.

Excelling in the regular is of debatable value in the culture of the NHL, IMO winning the President’s Trophy should be far more respected than it is. I can only assume that this goes back to the original 6 days when being best of 6 didn’t really matter, the playoffs were what counted.

Being a lock to make the playoffs (which the Leafs have been for years) should be worth something; it offers the opportunity to experiment and make personnel moves at your leisure when not every game is life or death. Not that it helps us, apparently.

We got beat by Sergei Bobrovsky single-handedly in the year 2023.

Soak that in folks.
I know it’s crazy to think, but maybe a team that’s only a season removed from being considered a contender is actually a good team despite a bad transitional people after some shakeups to start their season. Maybe they’re legit and Toronto/Boston aren’t complete choke artists. Also, Bob has always been inconsistent with stretches of vezina caliber tending and stretches or fail, so that’s just whatever.

I wanted to win but some folks(not necessarily the individual I’m quoting) seem to think this is unacceptable and are freaking out to the point I worry about their blood pressure.

Matthews worried me but truth is he had a bad season by his standards as well. Hopefully this is just an off year but honestly it might not hurt to entertain moving him for depth to shake things up. Marner can turn most first/second line centers into 40goal scorers anyway.

Lol we’re not getting a return anywhere close to the Lindros deal, he only has two seasons left on his contract then he could leave wherever he’s traded to.

This is fair.

I can just tell you I live in Boston (HATE the Bruins) and these people want to set the entire Bruins organization on fire. They do anger pretty well here and no one cares about the 65 win thing.

Something was way off with Natthews this season. It’s hard to believe Jack Eichel is better than Matthews at this point in time, but he is.
Maybe Matthews needs to play in the Western Conference.
