Kane was always the noticeably better player than Toews, which is why the contract gap was narrowed as that offset the importance of the center position. With the Leafs Marner and Matthew's produce at similar rates yet Matthew's is by far the better goal scorer.

Its not at all similar to the Kane-Toews situation
MM Goal above replacement: 18.1
AM Goals above replacement: 11.1

The game is more than raw goals.

I was pointing out the irony of his statement.

(...)

Certainly doesn’t help that Friedman just has random thoughts and posts them on the internet as “professional speculation”. This is a man with no information, he literally makes stuff up and spews anything that comes to mind.

I guess it’s not his fault that people take him for gospel.
Didn't he give you a perfectly reasonable explanation:

I was only replying to someone that quoted me and tried to stir the pot. Pot successfully stirred for him

And by the way, :faq: , or at least the rules.

Kinda indicates to me the Leafs want Marner to take 10.5 and Marner's camp is asking for more than that.

Except Kane is like a hundred times better than toews.

And Matthews has like 50 more goals in 30 less games
At the time many people thought Kane didn’t deserve the same contract as Toews and that Toews took a small cap hit so they could stay together. I know Tavares is a good player, but I don’t understand signing the logic of ensuring you have two goal scoring centers who were going to take up almost 30% of the cap. Also Matthews thinking he somehow deserved a cap hit almost equal to Mcdavid on a shorter term.

Matthews hit will be 13.5-14 instead of 16.
I’m not saying he took a discount. But they actually represented by the same agency

Maybe they watched Connor take a cut and the team become a disaster. Fool

Goals and Points at Even Strength

“Cherry picked”

*Per 60

Hard to say he's not comparable to him given that Marner was arguably better than Matthews this year, and has already eclipsed Matthews' career high in points by 21 points.

Does that count as cherry picking?

This might as well be here too.

So basically he will be getting at least 10.5m

Hard to see a team not willing to spend two firsts, a second and a third on a player like Marner if they have the cap space.

How about you show total points and use points in all situations rather than cherry picking for whatever Matthews is better at and leaving out the situations that dont help him.

Using Points Per 60 and Even Strength points is not only common, but typically the best way to assess players.

yes, looking exclusively at total points is cherrypicking. Applying context by adjusting for ice time is not only reasonable, but smart

I don't know why everyone thinks MM signs for anything less than 10M. The compensation for an offer sheet of 10,148,302 and under is 2 firsts, a second and a third. I dont think theres a GM with cap space who wouldn't give that up and run as fast as he could away with MMs name on a contract.

Yup, that 10.1 million+ number (Edit: 10.5+ million as set for 2019/2020) is the starting point of negotiations between the Leafs and Marner, and it goes up from there.

If the Leafs don't want to play ball, I'm sure the canucks would be be pleased to take Marner of their hands for 2 firsts, a 2nd and a third.

That would be a nice #1 Powerplay Unit:

Pettersson-Horvat-Marner
Q. Hughes-Boeser

Marner just score 94 points. That's a full 21 points higher than Matthew's highest point total.

Matthews is not a comparable for Marner because Marner is better.
Leafs are going to feel so lucky when Marner makes less money

Leafs are matching anything 10.6 or below, don’t get your hopes up.
