He’s been okay in the 3 games. Hasn't wowed me but at the same time hasn’t done anything to hate him. With Murray on IR would like to see Robertson called up and given a chance on the second line now. Let’s see how does with a few games with Tavares and Nylander.

He will get buried as the season goes along and will be invisible in the playoffs. I can see it already…
Leafs are better off with Robertson

He's got 200 NHL games.

You are only seeing what you want to see to justify your position

I keep reading about his 200 games. Who cares. Why was in the Swiss League then? Why did we get hIm for nothing, as he’s some seasoned pro? Why didn’t other teams want a top six forward, seems weird, given we have a ton of firepower, he should be even more attractive to offensively challenged teams, no? Also, he’s been here before, with this team, Ive seen his game. Looks identical.

People think it‘s hate, but really its just a POV that some preferred Robertson, with caveat we get the waiver stuff. So now, yep, I’m watching Malgin to see if he’s deserving of a PLUM gig, why wouldn’t you? So far, he’s been a passenger on that line, and yes, he scored a gimme, but let’s look beyond that. For me, it’s does he translate to tight hockey, in the playoffs? His game so far suggests to me no, but I’m not going to feel like “told you so” if he lights it up and becomes a stud. Great!

He came to the NHL as an 18 or 19 year old, which was too early for him. He was put into defensive/checking roles his entire time with Florida, so he made the decision to go back home to develop his offensive game.

He didn't sign with anyone else because he couldn't. The Leafs owned his rights as he was a qualified RFA.

I stand corrected there. Thx.

I think an argument could be made that Robertson making the team Game 1 would have been a nice way to reward the kid for hitting a certain level of play in camp and he could feel the progression. Looks like he’s made it back anyway. The other argument in favour of Robertson is he has more upside. So if you could get 60% of Jason Robertson, that would be a big boost.

I was worried we’d lose his momentum out of camp. I also feel he’s the longer term priority, so if you can get him in the top six now, the payoff might be more come playoff time. He has more upside, he’s more of an energy guy too, which that line could use to compliment. The thing with Malgin, does he fit anywhere else on a team, that’s been his struggle? He has a skill set, but just keeping up with Willie and JT, I’d like to see more.

He’s also averaging 12 minutes a game so far.

I‘d also add, he should produce, he’s on a top second line in the league, just by being on the ice, some points will come. The trick is looking beyond that, and his gimme goal constantly be used already suggests some won’t.

What I find interesting is the Leafs seem to really love Calle Jarnkrok. Versatile, intelligent, toolsy, can play down on the third line comfortably in a role but can also mix and match in a pinch higher up. Understanding they like that kind of player in the middle 6 or bottom 9, what I'm not understanding with Malgin is he's sort of stuck in a gear shift where he's between the 2nd and 3rd line in talent level, but needs to be 1st and 2nd line in terms of role.

Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t stick. I could see Jarnkrok getting some time on the second line, he does seem “versatile” like you say.

In my opinion.. start acting like a contender and try someone else for malgin now

This season isnt for f***ing around.. be better or your out. Get ahead of honeymoon ending eventually

I don't mean to harp on him too much. I think he's proven that he can fill in when there's injuries, but I just don't see him as an 82 games 2nd line LW.

Marner hasnt been good either, but Bunting is a noticeable drag right now
Something is off a bit. They are not clicking on all cylinders. Marner would have his pick of 2 shooters if Robertson was on there.

Unpopular take:

The top line looks off and Bunting IMO is the reason. Maybe try Robertson there?
May as well try I agree but with Matthews new found physical game having Marner and Robertson as his backup scares me a little lol.
