The top line looks off and Bunting IMO is the reason. Maybe try Robertson there?

Bunting in my opinion isn't the best fitted to be a first liner. I know I'm going get a lot of heat for this.

He did score 23 goals but so did Hyman 21 goals back to back years and he wasn't the best fit to play with Matthews and Marner

Teams will do to Bunting what they did to Hyman. Leave him alone

23 goals seems like a lot, but playing with two superstars isn't exactly ground breaking

Bunting really doesn't have any specific skill he can rely on. Not fast enough, not hard enough shot..

Robertson does have speed and decent shot. Can be another weapon for Marner

Coming back to Malgin. Not a bad player but really doesn't bring anything different.

If they're gonna give that second line LW 12 minutes per game it's better it is Malgin. I'd like to see him with bit more ramped up minutes from 14-16 min. Robertson benefit more from playing in the AHL 20 minutes per game, than in sheltered role in the show for 12 min.

You'd think that they bring Robertson up pretty soon and will shuffle the deck a bit, if our play is off after next 2 to 4 games. Same goes with Robertson give minutes that he can really contribute.

People were pissed that we gave up on Marchment too soon and now can't wait that we get rid of Malgin as soon as possible. He hasn't proven yet, that he doesn't belong.

I keep reading about his 200 games. Who cares. Why was in the Swiss League then? Why did we get hIm for nothing, as he’s some seasoned pro? Why didn’t other teams want a top six forward, seems weird, given we have a ton of firepower, he should be even more attractive to offensively challenged teams, no? Also, he’s been here before, with this team, Ive seen his game. Looks identical.

People think it‘s hate, but really its just a POV that some preferred Robertson, with caveat we get the waiver stuff. So now, yep, I’m watching Malgin to see if he’s deserving of a PLUM gig, why wouldn’t you? So far, he’s been a passenger on that line, and yes, he scored a gimme, but let’s look beyond that. For me, it’s does he translate to tight hockey, in the playoffs? His game so far suggests to me no, but I’m not going to feel like “told you so” if he lights it up and becomes a stud. Great!
He wasn’t free to sign with any team. He was on our reserve list as a qualified FA.
So no it wasn’t necessary that no team wanted him.

Buntings penchant for offensive zone penalties will soon see Keefe relegate him to another line.

Goal game 1, two posts in the first 2 games…

Are people actually upset with his play so far? He’s been solid!

He's certainly outplayed Bunting.

He looks like the 3rd best player on a line with our two best players by far right now. He is not sticking to the perimeter, which would have been a concern for him, and he is even laying out hits.

If one of those post shots goes in, he is looking pretty damn good on the scoresheet too.

Bunting hasn’t been good but there is 23M worth of cap space on that line maybe we shouldn’t just blame the guy making 950K.
Offensively Marner isn’t sharp with his passes and Matthews shot isn’t where it was mid season last year either.
The whole line is off for me the difference is Marner and Matthews do things to make up for it outside of providing offence where as Bunting doesn’t. But given the difference in what they are making I would expect them to.

I'm not really a Geno Malgin fan, but he did have a good camp and has gotten on the board in the early going. I'm curious to track whether they'll treat him like a roster fixture who will just have a role on the team, or if they'll quickly burn through and waive him like a European free agent a la Barabanov, Lehtonen if they don't like what they see.

Never been a big fan because he seems like just a watered down version of what they already have but this is way too early to be judging him I think. I am going to same minimum 15 games before you start messing with the lineup that started the season. The beginning of the year is where they have the luxury of being patient.

Malgin doesnt have any standout skills so he is easy to hate. Doesn't shoot the puck extraordinary well, skating leaves something to he desired, and no bite to his game.

That being said, with the minutes he has been given I think he has performed well. Give the guy a chance and he may just suprise us.

The whole team seems sloppy to start the season. Maybe a little less golf/tennis and more offseason preparation should have been in the cards.

Give it to the 10 game mark, minimum, before we start gifting players on waivers. You just know they'll be claimed.

Just my 2cents.

@CelticDruid
30 is high, but given the style he plays and how many he draws i dont see an issue. clearly you do though. people will never be happy with this team lol.

also show me the stats on how many are in the offensive zone plz.

Malgin has looked good to me.
Active in all three zones, no egregious errors, physical, battling for the puck, has the goal, couple other dangerous chances, doesn’t look overwhelmed physically, by the pace, or outmatched.
He’s learning linemates too.
I wouldn’t pull the chute at all.

i personally think due to the pretty intense competition for the open spots on the roster and the amount of B2Bs the regular season lines we typically roll out barely didnt get used alot, i think each top line played 2 or 3 max times together.

i dont even really like him as a player and i feel the need to stand up for him lol. hes been relatively good individually and 1/3 of our best overall line so far. what were people expecting here really?

They holding/rotating his spot until Mathew Knies is eligible to play before the playoffs

Bunting - Mathews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kerfoot - Jarnkrok
ZAR - Kampf - Kubel

Malgin has a similar identity on his line that Nylander does, they do not work together and compound the issue of that line being soft. Malgin needs to be insulated with a gritty winger, decent size centerman. On top of Malgin being in that spot, Robertson has more upside and deserves that spot right now.

He's a tweener at the NHL level unfortunately no going around that.
His demeanor fits this team to a tee though so they'll probably keep him around.
