I'd be more upset if it was a 2nd in this year's draft.

I'm not sure why Dubas should get credit for having to waste a 2nd to get rid of that terrible Ritchie contract he signed in the first place. Whatever. I hope Dzingel does something useful occasionally.

He wouldn't get credit for that. He gets credit for trading Ritchie and a 23 3rd or 252nd for Lyubushkin and Dzingle.

Lyubushkin plays against top competition, with weak linemates, and posts great defensive results on an absolutely terrible team. That is undeniably impressive.

He's big, can hit, skates well.

The reason I was so high on trading for him is that:

1) He's low cost (unlike the stupid asks for Chariot)
2) He brings the defensive impacts that the Leafs need
3) He has top-4 upside on a good team

I would have been comfortable giving up a 3rd just to acquire Lybushkin. Dzingel probably would have gotten a 4th-6th rounder at the deadline.

Ritchie had negative value.

I think we make out okay here.

If it was this years second, I like it a lot less but still like it and do it. Clearing that 2.5 next year was imperative

I dunno, playing 20+ minutes on the top matchup pairing on one of the better defensive teams in the league seems to be handling it pretty well.

Holl is a 6-7 being carried by elite players

He's been ass in the playoffs, and ass all year

You are probably looking at the pick to acquire Lyubushkin and Ritchie to acquire Dzingel. Fair price on both ends, but would have preferred to even up the contracts by tossing in Kivihalme or something.

I guess you can't complain about paying fair price for a guy, but I am not overly sold on Lyubushkin. He should only be a #7 here. I guess we will be happy if he can step up in the playoffs or something, and if he lets us move Dermott for what he is worth, then you can't complain.

I'd give it a 'B'. And I'll take that given we could have given up a higher pick for a guy like Chiarot, which would not have been good. I also think we are done outside of maybe moving Dermott, which is a good thing IMO.

Gotta be a follow up move seeing Dermott sent out for some back filling of draft capital

Dubas did well with this one. He made the mistake getting Ritchie. He's now made up for it by not having him on the cap for next season. He did right by Ritchie who just wants to play in the NHL. And he got a steady stay at home D and F depth.

I think Dermott gets moved. Maybe Liljegren steps out until that happens, but we saw Keefe have a long one-on-one with Dermott today in practice. Maybe a coincidence, but Dermott doesn't really have a job here anymore, and typically a guy like him doesn't get that kind of attention from the HC on the same day you acquire a guy who effectively takes his job.

He is a #8 by default now and he deserves much better than that.

At a glance deal seems decent for the Leafs. Picks up a couple useful depth pieces and sheds Ritchie's salary for next season.

Would imagine they'll end up taking the 3rd. Hard to see a GM playing the long game to wait 3 years for a draft pick.
