That's exactly what I mean. He doesn't do the Holl flip to the blue line, back around the net. Muzzin flip to the blue line, back around the net. Rinse. Repeat. He makes the smart pass. Like I said he's not going to dazzle anybody but he's going to do the simple smart play and get the puck to the guys that can do the right things.

If you expect Lybushkin to be more reliable with the puck than Muzzin and Holl your opinion is not credible.

They were carrying 7D and 12F before the trade. If they want to accrue cap space for another trade before the deadline they need to drop one of the now 13 forwards.

I don't see them making any more trades to add to our lineup, unless it is a guy with term who can fit somewhere in our bottom 6, but it would help to accrue some cap so we can act as an in-between like we were with Lehner a few years ago.

Lyubushkin (and Dzingel) are likely the only noteworthy rentals the Leafs get this year... And that is a good thing. We may get a depth swap or two involving some Marlies depth (I can see us moving Menell to a rebuilding team for a LD who can be #8 on our depth chart for example), but I think people expect us to go "all-in" and that is not really a thing the Leafs should want to do.

A refresher on how Bogo did in the playoffs last year:

Reminder: muzz/holl took the toughest matchups and zone starts, while bogo was sheltered on the bottom pair.

5v5 goals against/60

1. Brodie 0.00
2. Rielly 0.80
3. Dermott 1.16
4. Holl 1.44
5. Muzzin 2.08
6. Sandin 3.88
7. Bogosian 4.23

Expected Goals Against /60

1. Rielly 1.13
2. Brodie 1.40
3. Dermott 1.55
4. Sandin 2.13
5. Bogosian 2.51
6. Holl 2.56
7. Muzzin 2.82

Expected Goals Against relative

1. Rielly -7.2
2. Dermott -5.1
3. Brodie -4.1
4. Sandin +1.6
5. Holl +4.7
6. Bogosian +6.4
7. Muzzin +6.8

So even though he was sheltered, he gave up more goals than anyone and his Expected Goals against impact was about the same as our top matchup pair's.

And that's just the pure defensive numbers - I'm ignoring that he was useless offensively too.

This year both our 3rd pair and our PK have been much better without him.

I don't know why we'd want another Bogo (if lyubushkin is even as good as Bogo).

As depth it's fine but I highly, highly doubt this guy deserves to play over any of our current dmen.

And Bogosian is a better skater, shooter and puck handler than Lybushkin.

Not Lybby. How about Bush....:naughty:
How about Leaf-bushka

Copsidering what our draft capital is this year, I think we already did...

We have our top 2 picks in each of the next three years. If we wanted to make a big move, we can.

I just don't think we want, or should, make a big move right now. We are done with Ritchie. We should be doing something with Dermott. I think if we are mostly quiet after that, we have done a great job.

This is why I like Dubas. Even if he makes a trade or signing that doesn't work out the way he hoped, he's able to usually fix things and not have a bad contract on the team taking up cap space. How many GMs have the Leafs had that can do this time and again?

Lets hope this Bush guy is decent. Its certainly better than giving up much more for a Chairot.
Awesome takes

I don’t necessarily think Lyubushkin has top 4 potential as some have said here, but let’s not act like Holl is a bonafide one either. In his tenure as a Leaf he’s been carried by Muzzin on our 2nd pair. When Muzzin got hurt in both playoffs series, he’s looked just ok. This year, Muzzin has struggled or just been out and Holl hasn’t been very effective as a result.

* Dubas corrects the signing of Ritchie at a low cost, while letting a player who was never going to see the Leaf jersey again have another shot in the show. Reminds me a bit of Leivo.
* A 2nd or 3rd to do so while getting back two players who carry no baggage next year, and one should and the other who might help. :D
* I now look at our roster and don't see anyone who cannot be moved. Dzingel, to the right team (injury) could be moved for a low pick, an insurance type move.
* Gotta say, I'm impressed. Well done, Kyle.
He really has done a great job !

Great move, Lube doesn't need to be an allstar he just needs to be an effective net front presence and; similar to Niemo in Edmonton, try and sway the culture to be more punishing.

He's not going to be Weber, but if he can make every inch of space in his own zone below the hash marks hell then that's all he needs to be.
