Pretty good defensive game. Some mistakes and lapses but nothing huge. I don't think Campbell needed to be great and made the saves he needed to. Every part of the defense was really good.

Marner was cursed this game and probably deserved a couple points --- He was good. Tavares missed 2 golden chances but kind of just didn't do much overall... but he's also dependable defensively. Ritchie is just... there, but at least he's hitting I guess.

I thought Amadio, Simmonds and Spezza were great tonight, probably our best line for the most part.

JT and Marner need to get out of their own heads and they will be fine. That said, their lack of finish just brings back memories of the past few playoffs…horrible feeling
So they're in playoff form?
:D

Despite not being able to score on the empty net, I thought Marner had a good game. Nylander continues to impress, absolutely love Kampf as a depth C, Bunting played well, I would like to see more from Tavares. He does not look like himself this year. Was great on the faceoffs but not much else.

Matthews should be this teams captain... he has tons of swagger - reminds me a bit of Ovechkin. Both Marner and Tavares seem to lack confidence and don't have a lot of swagger (even though Marner thinks he has it). It's getting tiresome watching Marner hanging his head after every missed opportunity as if he's in disbelief that the puck isn't going in and the hockey gods hate him or something. It couldn't be that he lacks goal scoring skillsets (weak shot, lack of shot variation etc).

I think Tavares is one of those guys who would be better off without the C, he seems like a guy that shouldn't be the "it" guy. Reilly is a strange A too.... from the Amazon series, he seems quite introverted. With an exception to Matthews, the rest of the players with letters lack leadership qualities.

No question though, Matthews should have the C on this team. He is the face of this franchise and he radiates confidence.

Does anyone even feel like Tavares is this teams captain and not Matthews?

The Leafs grabbed the deuce despite some poor sniping, like the other night and the 3 posts, the 4 shots missing wide open nets, they should have pumped in 9 or 10 over the two games, and maybe had 2 or 3 more against the Canadiens.

So other then the Leafs needing to adjust their sights and being ready to play right off the get go. They've been able to pocket 4 of 6 points and probably should've had all 6 if it weren't for some questionable on ice rulings and phantom calls.

Micheal Bunting is making himself right at home in the B&W and carving out a space for himself on the roster as well as serving notice that his office will be in the oppositions crease. He's currently playing with the double K's but his future is higher up in the food chain. Ritchie imo still does not look like he has the wheels to skate with the big boys, and the big boys need a LW that can get in on the forecheck and not just be crossing the blueline while they are already doing the heavy work.

Taking all that into account Ritchie K and K will be a pretty effective 3 line, hopefully once Miki is back he can play with Engvall and Vintage on what might end up being the most dangerous and effective 4th line in the entire league, in fact that line might match more than a few teams 3rd lines.

The future for this team is looking fairly bright, as long as they can get some real NHL goaltending and can remain relatively healthy.

Even though they all stink, have zero heart, can't score get paid way way way too much and receive less than competent direction from the peewee coaching staff.

Bunting been playing with Willie and Kerfoot. Engvall is the one playing with Kampf and Kase.

I'd be interested in these line when Matthews comes back:

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner
Ritchie - Kampf - Kase
Spezza - Engvall - Simmonds

If I had a dollar for every supposed"built for the playoffs" team that ended up golfing early.....
Yeah, we tried that a couple of times. Turns out "made for the playoffs" is worthless if you can't MAKE the playoffs...
