Pretty good defensive game. Some mistakes and lapses but nothing huge. I don't think Campbell needed to be great and made the saves he needed to. Every part of the defense was really good.

Marner was cursed this game and probably deserved a couple points --- He was good. Tavares missed 2 golden chances but kind of just didn't do much overall... but he's also dependable defensively. Ritchie is just... there, but at least he's hitting I guess.

I thought Amadio, Simmonds and Spezza were great tonight, probably our best line for the most part.

I like watching Tavares play. He is not flashy and he is not going to blaze by people like our younger stars, but he does so many smart things that go unnoticed and help us win a crap ton of games. Rarely makes mistakes or has a bad game. One of the best faceoff guys in the league.

Man just needs a goal to go in. No different than any of his other snakebitten stretches the past few years, and he always bounces back with his fair share in the end.

Good win tonight

I don’t know about you guys, but for me, something feels off about this team this year and I can’t seem to put my finger on it. Maybe it’s just because Matthews isn’t in the lineup.

They aren't playing great so far.

Defense has been much spottier than last year, mostly due to the Muzz-Holl pairing, and while they're creating tons of chances they're not scoring enough either.

Some of it may be due to so many new faces in the lineup. Just a little bit off.

Disagree, Taveras has not been good and the little things he does is not worth having him.

he blocked one shot, nice but he was so out of position on Montreal’s goal and then he turned the puck over and we almost got scored on.

Montreal's goal? He wasn't in the line up for the Montreal game and his "blocked shot" was actually a bonafide save. That puck was going in if he hadn't saved it. Not a perfect game but very good on the whole. Take him over Dermott or Holl

sorry ottawa PP goal*

also he was getting beat by Stutzle a lot down the right side. His gap control needs a lot of work. Idk I think we over hype our prospects, outside of the blocked shot, he wasn’t spectacular. To me Dermott and Sandin are the future of this D core.

Wouldn't surprise me if Montreal misses the playoffs but I doubt NYI misses. They were clearly the only team that had a chance to beat Tampa last year.
My god this take is hilariously bad....and sad.

I sometimes wonder about the state of mind of posters on here....especially the ones who never say a good word about anything or anyone. Sound familiar?

Montreal goal, eh?

Keep digging, you have outed yourself as nothing but a hater.

People get too up and too down when it comes to prospects. It's like a line drawn in the sand and you're on one side of the other.

Was Liljegren great last night? No. Was he awful? No. He was ok, which is what we need for now and I expect him to improve as he gets more comfortable.

How long is Holl out for? Some took it as a good sign that he played with Muzz, I didn't. I know they played some of camp/pre season together, but to me that means when Holl is healthy, we go back to status quo, with Keefe wanting to disturb his D pairings as little as possible last night.

Lil needs a run. Enough of this "you get one game to become a legitimate top 4 or you're out"

If Tavares/Marner weren't getting scoring chances I'd be worried. They're getting a ton of chances. They're going to start to go in.

it’s actually the opposite for me, because i know their talent.

the fact that mitch collapses and fails to convert IS my concern, so to see it continue is the entire source of the anxiety.

Was really hoping the Leafs would be up by 3 three goals late in the third so that maybe they can throw that Bishop kid in net, would have been a cool story

As was mentioned in another thread, you have to watch a D-man's entire game. Every one of our D had some bad plays yesterday that one can focus in on and magnify. It's part of the job. You need to look at everything he did yesterday and the majority of us believe that the good far outweighed the bad. Not a perfect game, but a solid debut.

Recall a stretch last year how we had to break up JT and Bill, they just didn’t work together. Then what happened? Relax, JT and Marner are generating chances (even with that dead weight on wing), there isn’t much to worry about. A career finisher can’t finish, take your recency bias and stop typing.

I'd be interested in these line when Matthews comes back:

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner
Ritchie - Kampf - Kase
Spezza - Engvall - Simmonds

I'm mostly with you.

Switch Kerfoot with Ritchie. Ritchie would make it so Taveres wouldn't have to take the pounding as the net front guy. That alone might allow him to have less bumps and bruises along the way. Not to mention I can't think of a Captain of any NHL team that gets mugged as often as Johnnie does.
