The growth in Cholowski's game since Detroit drafted him has been pretty remarkable. He's a great skater that passes well and gets shots through. If he keeps it up it wouldn't surprise me if he turned out to be a top pairing guy (even though he already is, but on a banged up Detroit d). I think it's safe to say he's going to be a 2nd pairing guy, but more of a #3D. He's definitely earned his spot on the team.

This is the rest of that excerpt from his september 11 article ranking prospects at the prospect tourney.

The next day he omitted him from the 100 prospects and HMs, 6 other wings prospects made the list.

3 weeks.

tbh I just hate how luke warm he acts toward certain players until he can't possibly act like it anymore and be taken seriously.

I don't see what is far off in that description TBH. Maybe calling him a 5-6 Dman in the NHL ? I say he has pretty legit top 4 upside, but wouldn't have said so, maybe five months ago.

That was more to say he watched him play, somewhat impressed him, still didn't move the needle. Now he looks wrong on his old assessment.

Like I said before, he was the same way with Pettersson, but to a lesser extent.

He played really good, had a goal and played almost 20 mins in his debut. Definitely more than 5 or 6 upside

Lets not act like Cholowski hasn't made huge strides in his development in the last few month.

Cholowski has looked like an intelligent, smooth-skating and poised player with huge potential since he was drafted. The narrative that he was nothing special until he miraculously turned into a great prospect this summer can be attributed almost entirely to DET fans being butt hurt that their team didn't draft Chychrun and assuming Cholowski the draft reach must be bad right up to the point he was right in front of their eyes (which is when he got good, weirdly).

Pronman's one and a half viewings since draft day probably also occurred with this narrative at the back of his mind.

This from his coach that helped him a lot in the BCHL. All Pronman had to do was some research, listen to what the Coach said about him and were he is now and the other guy is in college, he called it then. Only the Wings listened and good for them

Also he was totally under the radar when drafted, played in low-hype St.Cloud, didn’t play in WJC (where a lot of people form most of their prospect opinions) and only started getting a little bit of attention last year in juniors. The idea that he didn’t have upside came almost entirely from people not watching him and not hearing much about him.

Great 1st game for him. Looks more poised with the puck than our veterans.

Isn't this a little bit of revisionist history? After his mediocre season at SCS, I think the cautious viewing of him was justified. If I recall correctly, it seemed the general tone on him seemed to shift to a much more positive in a "he has potential"esque way once he went to the dub. Did/does Chychurn affect how many fans will see this pick, yes of course, and likely will for years to come. But that doesn't mean there weren't some legitimate concerns to his game in his D+1.

With that being said, he impressed me last night, gaffe on their second goal aside. Mistakes are ok this season, so long as he grows. If he become a Bouwmeester like 2nd or very good 3rd defenseman, I will be ecstatic.

Yeah Han Cholo had a poor D+1 season in St Cloud State, which is why there wasnt much enthusiasm surrounding him.

Between that in his D+2 season in the WHL he put on a ton of muscle, and then did so again this offseason. The results speak for themselves, hes now in the NHL and looks good.

Seems like a good chance to post this in this thread while we've got this hype train going:

Red Wings prospect Dennis Cholowski has had a very good season playing for both the WHL’s Prince George Cougars and the Portland Winterhawks. This morning, the Prince George Citizen’s Ted Clarke reports that Cholowski’s play has impressed Winterhawks GM Mike Johnston:
“Early in the year when I saw him play I thought he was a very mobile type of defenceman, jumps up ice, makes a good first pass, and I thought early in the year if we could ever get a player like that to help us out down the stretch that would be great and it turns out we were able to make that type of a deal,” said Johnston.
“But I didn’t realize how good he was. He’s a better player than I even though the was. He’s very good defensively and I compare him to (Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman) Seth Jones, who we had several years ago. Seth never ran over you physically, but he was strong, he used his body well, he had a good stick defensively, and then when he got the puck his transition pass or skating was really good and I think Dennis is a lot like that. He’s a better defensive player than I thought.”
The Detroit Red Wings obviously liked what they saw in Cholowski when they picked him in the first round, 20th overall in the 2016 draft. “He’s going to be a good pro, he’s well-suited to the game,” said Johnston. “He might be ready to step right in (to the Red Wings) next year. Some people say he might have to be a bit more physical or use his shot more. Well everybody still has to add something to the game.
“I think today’s defencemen, especially when you think of Detroit or Chicago, those types of teams that transition, they want their defence to skate and move the puck. I really think Detroit is craving a guy like that now, that can play that type of style. He was well schooled here (in Prince George) and I don’t know what happened at college, I don’t think he got the opportunity and the playing time (last season at St. Cloud State), but certainly coming back to our league has been good for him.
“We won’t get him back next year, there’s not a chance. We knew we would only have him for a short time but he’s a pro in everything he does and the guys in the room will learn from him and then he’ll move on.”

Team leading 25 minutes and 2 assists tonight for Cholo. Not bad for a guy in his second pro game.

He's obviously not ideal to be playing on the 1st pairing right now, but he's handling it better than anybody could've asked for.

He now has 5 points in 6 games. While his defensive game needs work like most young defensmen, he has been a breath of fresh air for Detroit with his puck moving ability and offensive game.

It's 'revisionist history' for you, not for me. He didn't simply underperform at St Cloud State, or he would have stayed there for another season; the way the coaching staff treated him raised major red flags. That didn't change my personal opinion of his potential. As I said, he's been a very smart, smooth-skating defenceman since he was drafted.

Sorry it took you guys a while to catch up, I guess.

His college coach flat out said he looked like a 16 year old. He always had the skating but he lagged behind severely from a physical standpoint.

When a player makes huge gains in the 1 area they were weak in and are good everywhere else it always looks like it should have been obvious all along.

Kudos to Dennis from going to “looking like a 16 year old” to getting up to 200 lbs and looking like an NHL’er within a 2 year time frame. That just speaks to his work ethic.

He was not my preferred pick back in 2016, but he has thoroughly impressed me so far and I have to give him credit for putting the work in and maximizing his abilities.

Imagine lacking validation in other aspects of life so much you need to be this needlessly pompous on a hockey message board LOL

One of two defensemen in Detroit history to start his career with 5 points in 6 games.

... Anybody wanna guess the other? :)
