with Cholowski I really didn't like how the Wings kept sending him up and down, I feel like that wishy-washy stuff really messed with his development

maybe he turns it around in Seattle but at this point I think the damage is done and he is what he is

He was up and down because Cholowski proved time and time again that he didn't belong in the NHL.

The dude wasn't even great in Grand Rapids. In 2019-2020 Cholowski was the 5th best defenseman on that f***ing team!

Seider
Hicketts
Lashoff
McIlrath

All of those guys were consistently better than Cholowski in Grand Rapids.

they should have kept him in the AHL for longer instead of repeatedly trying to force him up then

he never once spent more than half a season down there

not saying he needed to be forced up into the NHL but I think a bit more stability instead of bouncing around would have been helpful and probably lead to a better outcome

Pronman and the dude who needs more than just 23 games were both right.

I said he had top 4 potential, he was a first round pick with a rgeat start in the league. I stand by it, saying hes a potential top 4 D isnt the same as guaranteeing he'll be one if youre not new to the english language

Wings kept bringing Cholo up to play games at the NHL, and he couldn't hack it. Then they'd send him back to the AHL to learn, and it just never clicked. The guy plays the game like he's scared of the opposition.

Placed on waivers. A team will claim him.

Can he bounce back?

Still shaking my head at the Wings trading down and passing on Chychrun to take Cholowski. I mean, I know they cleared out Datsyuk's contract with that move, but in hindsight that didn't really matter too much.

The worst part was it was in the efforts to acquire a potential free agent that not only wouldn't have turned the Wings into a contender, but was also a free agent who was unlikely to even come here.

I had hopes for Cholowski initially, but he never could get it together, and it was apparent even from his first season there was something wrong. At least we have Hronek who is shaping up to be solid.

Cholo was just so mediocre.
If he had Hronek's "grit" or "battle," he'd be in the NHL.
But he played in such a way that you really couldn't tell if he cared.

That trade was and still is a decent trade. In reality the trade wasn't Cholowski over Chychrun, it was likely Cholowski+Hronek over Fabbro or Stanley.
You can certainly look at it as part of Detroit's NA scouting department being a bit questionable though, with their European scouts coming to save the day as usual. Without landing Hronek with that extra pick the trade would definitely have looked terrible.

I suppose there are other ways at looking at this trade. I was really hoping they would go with Chychrun in that spot, and still wish they had. If he wasn't in the Wings picture then it's a moot point. I still think it was a terrible call on their part, and if they weren't looking towards Chychrun then it speaks volumes about how poor the NA scouting was at the time. Totally agree that without Hronek that deal is very poor.

The trade was about moving Datsyuk's contract in an attempt to prolong a playoff streak for a dying owner. The draft eligibles were just the means to achieving that end. The mistake you are making is trying to evaluate it purely as a trade of draft picks when it was never really about that. Please also appreciate that NHL GMs are not NHL owners.

Good luck to Cholo in Washington.

Oh, I’m well aware of the intention behind them moving Dats contract, which is why I mentioned it in my original post. That part of the move turned out to have no real lasting impact. I think the mistake I’m making is assuming management would have taken Chychrun.

Yeah, from what we have heard, they weren't picking Chychrun at 16 anyways. There were apparently 3-5 other guys they were thinking of at 16 without the trade.
