When KH traded the [eventual] Chychrun pick and took Cholo, I had a feeling he knew what he was doing. Then he used that 2nd pick on Hronek. Perhaps this could unfold as another historical iconic Ken Holland hockey move to go towards his future HHOF resume.

I do expect Cholo to cool off, but he sure is fun to watch and definitely a breath of fresh air for a team that struggles to win a game and could very well be in the Hughes sweepstakes.

He's practically Chris Campoli 2.0.

His assets are:
- possess dynamic technical skating ability. Edgework, stop-start, lateral movement on blue line, backwards skating, etc
- is great at passing... almost all of his passes are tape-to-tape. Best passer on the team easily.
- has a deadly wrist shot from the blue line. Always seems to make it through to the net regardless of how many bodies screening
- extremely calm & poised, does not freak out under pressure
- has really nice vision in all three zones
- good puck skills

What he lacks:
- top end speed
- physicality

What he can work on:
- a shot other than a wrister
- his defensive play without the puck
- decision making. When to pinch, join the rush, etc

The latter two points there are rookie things, I think there is a good chance they'll improve. If they do improve he can be a top pairing D. If not he's still a capable 2nd pairing guy that can run a PP.

7 points in 10 games now. Set up the winning goal tonight.

He'll never get a look but that kind of production from a defender plus the fact that he's getting the most minutes of any rookie should be cause for Calder consideration.

Of course, he could totally tank the rest of the season, I'm just talking about the season thus far.

he's not getting flukey 2nd assists though, you probably know better than me but he's been your best dman too and it hasn't been close. a calder nomination wouldn't shock me, he will get all the opportunity to produce.

Nah, he's a very good puck mover on the transition and can pretty much put the puck where he wants it.

With respect to how many Wings fans had been leery of the Cholowski pick, understand that the Wings haven't drafted or developed a skilled defenseman in 16+ years. Not since Kronwall in 2000. That's been the lens through which Wings fans been following their defense prospects. We've really had no reason to trust the Wings choice of defenseman, particularly with an under-the-radar guy that no other organization or media outlet had really endorsed.

His vision and patience with the puck really stand out. He has that knack for buying an extra second to let a passing/shooting lane open or just creating space to allow him to skate in another direction. Very impressed especially given the top pairing role he's been playing

Great start to his career. Good to taper expectations so early in his career.. once teams get video on him and figure how to attack him and defend his breakouts we will see how he reacts and adjusts. Early signs indicate though, he is one of the pieces we have been searching for to start the rebuild. A foundation block on the back end.

I like Cholowski as much as the next guy but let’s please not set ourself up for major criticism and disappointment by calling him a top pairing guy after 10 games.

Absolutely. Like someone else said, however, he's not getting flukey points. The majority of the points he's accumulated are the result of him playing a key role in the play, if not driving the play (like his assist on the GWG last night). Even when he's not putting up points, he's putting guys in great positions to get a chance. He sees the ice so well. He's a natural in the offensive zone.

Now, whether or not he ever rounds out his game to become a more complete player and actually be worthy of being a top pairing guy on a good team, that's wayyy to early to tell like you said. But for now, his future as a PMD is looking very good.

Do keep in mind that Detroit only drafted 3 d-men in the first round since 2000, and none of them in the top-10. So I understand you want to look back into the history and all, but I see it as a failed argument.

He is technically already a top pairing guy because thats what hes playing but I get what youre saying. If his defensive game progresses like you can reasonably expect a 20 year old first rounder to do its looking more and more like a legit top pair guy. I honestly think his offensive game and puck moving ability makes him a top 4 guy on a lot of teams even if his D doesnt progress at all.

Nothing wrong with projecting him to be a top pairing guy after the start he has had jumping straight from junior to the NHL and where he was drafted. But I dont think anyone should be calling him a bonafide top pairing guy just because hes playing the minutes and producing like one either. He needs to prove it over the course of a whole season and not burn out.
