You know, after seeing Colbert's work prior to The Daily Show, I believe he can do whatever he wants. I will say that his best characters skew towards the disagreeable and deluded (Colbert Report, Chuck Noblet in Strangers with Candy) but he has range.

Speaking of Strangers with Candy, I'm hoping Amy Sedaris will be his sidekick.

I'm going to miss Colbert. I still howl at his gay mayor sketch.

In about the last two years, Jay & Dan, Craig Ferguson, The Report and now Letterman have all departed. My late nights are now officially ****ed. Thankfully I get Conan on time shift channels so I get him at 11:30 and 12:30.

Colbert can't come back soon enough to fill the void.

You had to graduate from high school by 1980 to be a true fan so you could watch his morning show.

I was born in 1985 and I was definitely a true fan.

The finale was great. The clips they put together during Everlong were amazing, too. Definitely brought tears to my eyes. I grew up watching Letterman, and him not being on anymore is just going to be weird.

Congratulations on the awesome career, though.

He wasn't that great on CBS, but he changed tv on NBC.

Conan had a terrific tribute to Dave last night. And that's no joke--he told all of his viewers to turn off his show and turn on Dave's at 11:35.

I was never a fan of Letterman. That said to deny his impact on late night TV would be a falsehood. He'll be missed.

I was in high school/college in the 90s and Letterman was ingrained as part of my day. Typically I'd be studying up to about 11pm, then I could flip on SportsCenter and then watch the first 30 minutes of The Late Show.

As time went on, there were better late night options to suit my taste but it did feel good to repeat the SportsCenter/Late Show combo last night.

Between Eddie Vedder and the Foo Fighters, minus Dylan, the performances were great recently.

Good finale. Good to see the show go out with a bang.

Looking forward to Colbert.

Colbert is going to do just fine. The guy is as natural as a comic as they come, and he has some of the sharpest wit around.

I have no doubt that he'll be great on the show as himself and not the character "Stephen Colbert".

Colbert won't do the show as "Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report" but he will certainly still be doing characters, and probably that one on occasion.

I am optimistic. I think he will be much, much better than Fallon. And Kimmel is good, i'm just not a fan of him (I really hate his "bits" where he gets parents to prank their kids...though it is more so the terrible parents following his instructions I have the problem with).

I like the Colbert choice now that I've had some time to digest it. I love how CBS' "recent" hosts all have either an edge to them or are a bit on the unorthodox side relative to NBC's P.C. pile of garbage (Conan being the one exception).

I'm now embarrassed to admit that, growing up, I preferred Leno over Letterman.

My oh my, how time can change one's perspective on things, eh?

Happy trails, Dave, you were truly one of (if not) the best.

Going to miss Colberr a lot(one of my favourite 'characters')...but I too have no doubt Colbert will be entertaining.

I think Colbert will do something more sketch based and less traditional. Like Fallon but raking it a step further, and better. And I'm sure he'll be more eclectic with his guests.

Excellent farewell.

I grew up with Letterman since he started at NBC. I didn't watch him religiously, but he has always been my go to late night host of choice. Once I got a Tivo in 2001 he's always been set to record.

I hope he still finds his way onto our TV sets here and there.
