Confirmed with Link: Lane Lambert Named Head Coach

I think we had a bunch of C19 issues during that spell, so not sure I'd read much into the TOI.
Good point, but it looked like the Isles iced a full line up. Barzal and Dobson led the Isles in icetime pretty significantly. I think this is a good sign that we may likely see more trust in younger players, and this can only be great for their development.

If I had to guess the hypothetical Lambert hire, I'd say DET would be likely. That was his team and I think Lambert and Yzerman have a connection.

To add to the TOI increase of Barzal and Dobson when Lane was behind the bench. Interesting that Bellows also had 18:12 TOI and Parise with only 12:17 TOI. Small sampling, but this is the only info we have at the moment.

Still a clue to what maybe in-store with the new Coach.

The light bulb seemed to go off for Dobson over the course of this past season. Who was his D partner again? I don't think that's a coincidence.
agreed, greene was also back there guiding him too.... also, maybe dobson is better suited to the pro game adjustment than wally and didn't need to be "taught" as much as him. playing different positions probably factor into the equation.

i really like what someone posted last week about maybe the "system" being a little too overwhelming for wally and that maybe he's best suited to be nothing more than a goal scorer. that being the case, at least he seems to like to hit people so he may become a functional piece either here or elsewhere. I'm willing to give him some time, as he is just about to turn 22, still young enough to blossom into something

This is likely how it is.

My first thought when Trotz was fired was that Lou was faced with the following situation:
1) Trotz won't commit now for what comes after this contract
2) Lambert is ready to be a head coach and a handful of teams want him

So, if you're faced with a situation in which you may lose both guys you would want running this team, then you have a decision to make.

We now know what decision that was.
Hmmm, like Parcells and Belichick?

To be honest, the more I think about this, the more I think Trotz was burned out and LL gave him cover to let him get paid as a thank you to the two Conference Final trips. The way the team gave him the week off after his mother died is a major hint to all this.

I suspect in a few months we'll hear Barry come out and heap praise on the Isles. Both he and LL are too old-school to throw the other under the bus, and that will take the form of BT being magnanimous when asked his side.

Go back and watch the two Memorial Cup finals Dobson dominated and you'll see his adjustment curve was minor at best. Wahlstrom has nothing like that on his resume.

I recall reading somewhere that they were roommates.

Looks like Yzerman and Lambert were their 1st and 2nd round picks in 1983.

i like the demeanor wally displayed at the end of the season, where he said he appreciated Barry's "tough love" and he takes what he receives and tries to apply it

assuming that isn't just lip service, it shows me he's coachable and wants to improve

i am a huge fan of wally but maybe we set the expectation level too high for him?

some guys come in like gangbusters right from the jump and other take a little more time to grow into their potential

Agreed. The other thing that I thought could be possible is Trotz not wanting to coach into the lame-duck year without an extension. He went through it in Washington and only after winning the cup did it trigger an extension clause with a small raise that he declined.

I recall Lambert as a player on the same team with Stevie Y. He was a pain to play against. Could be something there, he was rumoured as a potential Red Wings target. If so, I like this hire even more. Stevie Y is sharp, the coach he hires next will have a plethora of talent to ascend in the east which that day is coming soon IMO.

They were roommates in their rookie year in DET.

I like this move. The system is not the issue. The players are the issue. Its not about it being defensive, its about puck management and how we forecheck. We need more speed and scorer desperately and without a doubt more on the blue line, specifically a PMD. Lou has to do his best to shed dead weight.

Actually I am starting to like the hire, the more I look at the player usage, the more I think it is the modern game now, communication has changed from old time coaches to new ones. I look at Edmonton and Florida, both assistants took over and they are in the final 8. I will still wait to see a bigger sample of how Lane will deploy his line up, the style we will play. But given he has long been a shortlisted Coaching candidate and Lou did not want to lose him, I am pretty stoked by this hire today.

personally don't think this moves the needle for Forsberg or Johnny hockey to look at the Isles..
Teams always find a way, however, there is limited cap space available on the attractive contenders for those guys to go to. Teams may not be able to clear space very easily either. So, I would not get too upset, if they stay put, but both going full UFA tells you they are interested in seeing the lay of the land before they reup. That's all one can really gather at this point.
