We went with the Steve Stirling route. Terrific! Lets see what we do with Lane but I am giving him a 1 year window, he was the assistant coach. Partial blame falls on him and lets see how he can turn it around in the 22-23 season.

Depending on what happens this offseason, I have little excitement about this team currently.
Why not the Peter Laviolette comparison? Who I think was let go to early. Count me in as one who loves this hiring and I think it is going to be terrific. Just because he worked under Trotz does not mean he is going to be exactly the same as Trotz (I always dislike when someone writes that, like he will be a clone). In any business anyone taking over always has their ideas or spin on things and hopefully will take what their predecessor did will and improve upon them. And who better to learn from then Trotz?

Would it be nepotism if the Isles drafted Brad Lambert? The controversy. :)

I grew up in a school district where both my father and grandfather taught. Typically, whenever I f***ed up I was punished 3x harder than other kids doing the same stuff by administration just so that it no one could ever claim I was getting preferential treatment. If Brad enters an organization where his uncle is running the show he's probably in for the same treatment - can only imagine that dynamic is amplified in a professional context

The light bulb seemed to go off for Dobson over the course of this past season. Who was his D partner again? I don't think that's a coincidence.

So which are you saying is the #1 reason for Dobson's development...?

  • He just figured it out on his own
  • His D partner is a better coach than was his actual coach

Lambert legitimately looks like an old school mob boss.

Then he opens his mouth and sounds like your high school English teacher.

Maybe Chara helped him even more than we realize.

1000% this was the case. I watched Chara/Dobson as closely as I could and every chance he got Chara was in Dobson's ear about this or that. Chara is an absolute winner because of his smarts and attitude.

Chara is a guy like Matt Martin who I would keep in the franchise after they retire as you cannot have too many quality/hardworking people in management positions.

Those fabulous 1983-86 Red Wings: Stevie Y, Lane Lambert, Ken Holland, Barry Melrose, Ted Nolan, and Gerard Gallant all were on their roster.
Weren’t the Wings a terrible team those years?

So happy it's not Q or Babcock.
lets revisit this at the end of '22-23 season. If we crap the bed with Lane, this board will say we could've had Torts/Q / Babcock and instead chose the assistant coach so he wouldn't go to Detroit.

Sounds like you're not aware of the fact the reason that many of us are glad it wasn't Q or Babcock has NOTHING to do with their coaching skills.

For what it's worth:

So did Lou hire the right guy for the job...Or just prevent an OK coach from going to a conference rival?

I dont really need to be aware of any reasoning of this board. No one's thoughts really matter here. There are people on this board who still think Hamonic/Okposo/Bailey were the new core of a dynasty. There are people on this board who defended Wang and Snow and Dougie and Jack till the very end. I personally have zero confidence in this decision making. You fire a guy who took you the final 4 twice and then say "yeah the new voice is Lambert" the assistant and then stories come out, well we didnt want to lose him to Detroit?? I love Lou, he offered us legitimacy but hes also in his 80's. We went from Laviolette to Stirling to Ted Nolan. Let me guess, after 1 season of Lambert we are going for an aging John Tortarella?

Just because you were someone's assistant doesn't mean you privately agree with everything they say/do.

This IS a new voice.
Absolutely, I read somewhere of Lou's track record when he changes coaches. His success rate is good. This is one area that I have the utmost confidence in him, that and always having good goaltending. If he says Lane is a new voice, I take him at face value he will be. I would cite the 2 things he mentioned in his media address. Development of young players, and more offence from the Defence. That's how the good teams will stay ahead in this league today. He's a modern coach who apprenticed under one of the old school's best. I am sure Lambert will take the best of both worlds and apply it to the Isles next season. Really this was a good day for the Isles. I wanted Q originally, due to how he turned Florida around. But really no one else who was coined as an experienced Coach. If we are to go with a Rookie coach, then I am absolutely delighted it was Lane. Given how assistant coaches have done of late, and Hearing that Yzerman may have targeted him makes it all that much better.

LAMO what??? Results are all that matters. This isn't a non profit organization where we want the fans to feel good about themselves.

Calm down. You're being triggered by certain words as opposed to digesting his overall point.

Yes - All most of us care about is wins, however some of us care about being a decent human being first.

So the people who are in the "thank god is wasn't Quenneville or Babcock" camp all want to win a Cup, but not at the expense of hiring an abuser and someone who covers up abuse.

Now if you understand his point and despite that you are in the camp where you would literally hire anyone to win, then you sir live in a different world of morality than most of us.

Someone reconcile this...

If Lou is not good at teaching young players (and Wahlstrom is the name often brought up), then how can anyone explain Dobson?
Considering our D or lack of, Dobson had more runway to work with before he found a seat as the next D man in was not going to bring anything to the table. Just found too many young players regressing, playing tentative.
Hopefully we can find a way to be a more exciting team and still win

At the end of the day this is the safe hire. I feel he will be close enough in though to Trotz but is an ex player and will have his own instincts which may open up the offense and improve Wahlstrom/Bellows and other young guys, so we can spend money on defense.

Would not be surprised if Andy Greene ends up on the bench.

If history is history, Lane will struggle and Lavvy will get the job as he ended up in Trotz's last 2 spots, j/k
