I don't really understand why this was done just to keep Lambert. I get the guy deserves a chance, but it's going to be a chance. It's not like he's a proven commodity. I'm not bashing the move, Lou knows better than I do about him. Just think it's kind of silly to make an assistant coach the new head coach when there are still other proven candidates out there...like Deboer. We all saw how Barry's last assistant coach worked out when he got promoted...

Willing to let it play out (like I have a choice, lol). Feels like Russian Roulette with coaches these days anyway, especially after St. Louis' impact. Maybe we'll catch lightning in a bottle too.

I don't believe Barry getting fired has anything to do with not wanting to lose Lambert

If you trust Lou (and I do a lot more than I dId going into his first Islander season) then I have no problem with his message that he felt this team needed a new voice.

Even when healthy, this team just never put It together against the better teams in the league this season. You can say they are slow, lack talent, but much of the returning core group just did not seem to respond and I think that may just be what Lou is talking about.

I am not saying Lane Lambert is definitely going to turn this around, but one step at a time. I am really looking forward to seeing what’s next with the draft, free agency, trades and seeing what we have going into October.

Well, not just that but knowing Barry would only coach one more season and wasn't a long term solution, like the rumblings state and was alluded to by Staple. Those two factors making it seem like that's what transpired. Granted it's Lou, and rumors, but some experts concur.

I know back when Roy flaked on us it was down to Bednar, Lambert and Travis Green. WIth Lambert being the runner up to Beds IIRC, so he's been highly thought of for a long time.

You could be right but the "needing a new voice " thing makes me scratch my head

Barry came very close to the promised land as the old voice and this past season had enough extenuating circumstances to write off as a lost season

I just have a feeling there is more to it all concerning Barry

One thing that’s been consistent is the high praise by former players of Lambert. Doesn’t mean it will translate to success as a head coach but at least he’s a guy who players really respect.

Meh x 1,000.

Not that Lambert can't/won't be great, but show me the even slightly objective (much less outright negative or cynical) comments when any coach is hired. It's all rainbows and lollipops in the media.

Now if we could tap peoples private phones and listen in, that would be extremely revelatory.

Except let's not let anyone tap our own!

And Lou's already walked back his "new voice" nonsense saying, "Well, maybe those weren't the right words" lol.

One thing I'll say...

Despite the 13 game road trip and the Covid issues...Once things settled down, the 2nd half of the season it felt like the guys weren't having any fun playing this year. Maybe they were really unhappy under Barry for some reason. I don't know what the reason was, but night after night it felt like it was a burden for them to play - Like they didn't look forward to going down to the rink the way they had the previous few years.

Once the playoffs were a dream by December, I just wanted the young guys to develop and the team to have fun out there and it looked like the exact opposite. And it they aren't enjoying what they do, usually the fans feel the same way watching them.

Change was needed all right. Not sure Trotz had to go, but I know new players need to be brought in. If swapping out Trotz for his understudy is Lou's most notable move this offseason then we are in big trouble.

This hire makes no sense. Lou fire Trotz's because he felt the team stopped listening to Trotz, He said they needed a new voice. But hires Lambert who basically has been trained by Trotz, coacching style is basically the same as Trotz. The message will be pretty close to the same as Trotz.

As Lou said, same system, differently personalities...hence new voice (in charge).

Might be worded confusingly, but my point was the one you made...That if Trotz was going to walk no matter what in a year then, exactly like Tavares, no reason for him to be part of this franchise and Lou did the right thing.

However if Trotz would've stayed and Lou just fired him because of one lackluster season (which was more Lou's fault than Barry's), then I have a big problem with that.

In fact I'd go so far as to say that if Trotz was truly committed to this franchise, he is better at his job than any player or Lou is at his, so I would've traded any player that wasn't on board with him.

Ah okay so my apologies. We are on the same page.

Lambert knows the old system as well as anybody, but he showed a willingness to play the kids and let the guys be a little more creative offensively. Wasn't that what he all wanted Trotz to do???

He wasn't my first choice, but it's definitely an understandable move, so I got no problem with it...

It's very rare when an assistant becomes the head coach that it works. Usually it's a disaster. The last times the islanders opted for this choice, it did not work: Weight replacing Capuano and Henning replacing Arbour in 1994.

And to justify the departure of Trotz, Lamoriello told us that the team needs a new voice, but with Lambert, it's not a new voice, he's been with the team for at least 4 years!

Give the press conference yesterday a listen to....

The bit about "a new voice" is a heavy topic and Lou both backpedals a bit and clarifies how Lambert is still now a new voice, pointing out how that the role of a head coach and assistant coach are vastly different.

But he is not! Even if Lamoriello wants us to believe it! The players know him very well, he has been with them for at least 4 years. Lambert's role will be different, but it's not a new voice, that's for sure!

Like I wrote, he backpedals from having made that statement too.

Give the presser a listen to FMI...

All in all, once we heard about Trotz being removed, a few of us here immediately pointed to this whole thing prolly somehow being about Lambert.

We had been informed that he had intereviewed for at least one HC job already last summer. The writing was on the wall once Trotz was dismissed despite a valid contract.

Generally, the Assistant Coach is more of the buddy-buddy "player's coach" type.

Obviously once you are hired as Head Coach one has to revise their approach and become more of a hard ass but maybe the "player's coach" element is what Lou has referred to as the "new voice."

Same expected accountability, same system, same lingo, different relationship with the players.

We'll see how it works out. Clock is ticking for sure.

And it wasn't a big success either, the last time a team decided to replace Trotz with his assistant! Todd Reirden in Washington in 2018. I hope history won't repeat itself here!
