Give the press conference yesterday a listen to....
The bit about "a new voice" is a heavy topic and Lou both backpedals a bit and clarifies how Lambert is still now a new voice, pointing out how that the role of a head coach and assistant coach are vastly different.
I find it amusing how bent out of shape people are getting over this whole "new voice" thing.

A bunch of nuggets in Friedman’s “32 Thoughts” just now…
1. Manitoba’s population is approximately 1.39 million. It sounds like each provincial resident is prepared to donate towards Barry Trotz becoming coach of the Jets, and they were interviewing him on Tuesday. Several sources are drawing a line from Trotz to Vegas, but I’ve heard the Flyers, who have seen him firsthand in Washington and New York, have a deep, deep respect for him and his work. He’s a top candidate there. If he’s more interested in management, which has been speculated, a return to Nashville might be his best fit. (It’s possible, too, that his next coaching job includes a move into the front office later in term.) A lot is on the table, there is much interest in his services. The true question might be: what really interests him?
12. When Lane Lambert was originally mentioned as a possibility to replace Trotz with the Islanders, a regular narrative came up: how hard it is to move from assistant to head coach on the same team. Morphing from good cop to bad cop isn’t easy, players don’t always accept that kind of change in a personal relationship.
I should have realized Lou Lamoriello would care less about that kind of narrative than anyone. He’s made this move on a few occasions, most notably in 2000 when Larry Robinson replaced Robby Ftorek in New Jersey. The Devils won the Stanley Cup that season, and lost Game 7 to Colorado in 2001. It’s clear Lamoriello believed in something I do consider important: if you’re going to block someone like Lambert from pursuing legitimate opportunities for promotion, you have to be prepared to promote them yourself.
14. Some Islander fans were in a panic that Mathew Barzal indicated something like he wouldn’t sign an extension if Trotz stayed as coach. I don’t believe that is true.
I dont believe it but If the following is true, I want Barzal off this team immediately. Sorry, you have proven nothing thus far to be making that kind of call.
No indication at all that Barzal would be that unprofessional. We need to stop putting honorable people like Trotz or Barzal in the crosshairs. The only one who should be under scrutiny is Lou.But Friedman is reporting Barzal did NOT a say he wasn’t resigning if Trotz was still coach.
But if he did how bad would it be that Lou actually listened to him…?
Why the heck would Trotz be a future GM, he is HOF coach but there is no reason to believe he would have future as a GM. Isles will replace Lou soon enough as GM but they should do it with a younger and analytical mind as that is really where league is right now.If we are going to continue to conjecture here a more plausible explanation would be that Lou saw Trotz as a threat to his own position as he was the most sensible replacement for his own job (if rumors were true that Trotz was seeking a front office position). Lambert would be the most logical choice for head coach for continuity of the system and someone who Trotz groomed himself. Lou made a pre-emptive strike and fired his replacement and most logical choice for GM of the Islanders rather than groom him. Thus the completely irrational decision to hire Lambert to bring in a "new voice". Maybe there is method to Lou's madness.
So basically taking Lou’s words at face value and not reading any more into it, a large part of his decision to hire Lambert was based on his 2-1 record when he served as interim coach. Now one would think that most GMS would see that 3 seasons of a winning record would be a stronger predictor of success over just 3 games but then again this is Lou we’re talking about. Yeah, we’re screwed.
He did say that played a part in his decision. Which I think is absurd. I'm not twisting his words just taking what he said at face value. Just like he said he wants a new voice and hires an old voice. Not much of what he does makes sense. Take note.Yes I am totally sure Lou made a decision based off of 3 games. This is a well thought out and informative post folks. Take note.
You have something against old people? Why the heck would Trotz be a future GM, he is HOF coach but there is no reason to believe he would have future as a GM. Isles will replace Lou soon enough as GM but they should do it with a younger and analytical mind as that is really where league is right now.
Yep.Ah…So the Isles didn’t need a “new voice” - They needed a less experienced, 1st time coach, who most likely even at his best won’t come close to the coach we already had.
Got it.
Duly noted. This is a well thought out and informative post folks. Take note.
Lol. There are people who don't like it when one goes against the grain even when one is just commenting on the situation as it unfolds. Like my signature says, "They shit on me too". I don't care. But I'm not going to sugar coat or rationalize the situation. I feel quite vindicated actually and can say I never drank the Kool Aid.
It doesn't make sense because while yes, I can understand Lou and Trotz not seeing eye to eye. But then why hire his loyal protege who sees eye to eye with Trotz.Without overthinking this, it's clear Lou and Trotz did not see eye to eye. In Lou's eyes he lost a few players at least on the team. Some of them are important to the Isles future. So He let Trotz go. Why is this so hard to understand? Lambert seems ready. We will see. It sounds like it was mutual between Lou and Trotz....
EXACTLY!I totally agree with this. Nothing against Lambert, but I don't see how this makes sense. I'm curious Lou, how is this a NEW VOICE???
Also Trotz and LL are definitely shorter than Lambert...don't really think he sees eye to eye with either one of them.It doesn't make sense because while yes, I can understand Lou and Trotz not seeing eye to eye. But then why hire his loyal protege who sees eye to eye with Trotz.
Explain this logic to me:
Trotz and Lou don't see eye to eye.
Lambert and Trotz see eye to eye.
Therefore, Lou and Lambert will see eye to eye.
It's totally illogical.
You've mastered hyperbole. You should write a book!Exactly. I wish people would stop overthinking this and just accept the fact that this is crazy Lou being crazy Lou. He has made such inexplicable moves in the past after relieving a coach. He oftentimes hires the assistant or himself next before stepping down or replacing the replacement in short order. See here Take what he says at face value and you will understand exactly what he means. When he meant he felt they needed a "new voice" he literally means that. He doesn't mean a new system, or accountability, or vision. He means "I just need to stick a new person in there and magic will happen". Ignoring the fact that it's the same system. The guy's basically a younger less experienced clone of Trotz. The guy followed Trotz wherever he went and worshipped him at his feet. Lou just literally wanted a different "voice" in there so he hired Lambert.
He claimed that he was putting the players on high alert. He claimed that the firing of the head coach was supposed to wake up the team. How is this waking up the team? We didn't have to lose the master to hire the apprentice but Lou knows better. We need to stop making cockimany excuses for the guy by making wild conjecture like Trotz wanted to retire. (He's too young and he will be coaching again soon), or it was all about Lou letting Barry retire early so they can hire Lambert and give Barry more family time. Like they all had some sort of secret plan (Nonsense because if it was so why give such a disparaging critique of Trotz's performance even beyond the past season and make him leave in somewhat of a disgrace). Nonsense! This conjecturing feeds into the nonsensical mystique that is Lou Lamiorello.
Like I said take what he says at face value and don't try to interpret it beyond that if you are trying to make any sense of his rational. He claimed that he was basically ok with John Tavares walking because they were not winning with him as their star player. He said if they were making the finals or if the situation "was different" maybe he would have had problems with it. This is not conjecturing by me or making some wild interpretation. This is exactly what he said. Initially I thought he was just trying to smooth out the situation with the fans, but it is clear to me now that Lou doesn't mince words. So instead of getting a brain cramp take what he means literally and then decide for yourselves if things make any rationale sense.
They don't.
What I see is Lou knows the Guys respond to Lambert, maybe Trotz lost the team. Lou and No Coach sees eye to eye because Lou is the Boss and He let's everybody know He is the Boss. Maybe just Maybe Trotz gave his blessing to Lambert and wanted a fresh start somewhere else. Who Knows....It doesn't make sense because while yes, I can understand Lou and Trotz not seeing eye to eye. But then why hire his loyal protege who sees eye to eye with Trotz.
Explain this logic to me:
Trotz and Lou don't see eye to eye.
Lambert and Trotz see eye to eye.

Along with confirmation bias... always makes for a great hot take conspiracy. You've mastered hyperbole. You should write a book!
Yes it's always best to just accept the hot take conspiracies that support only your beliefs. Lol.Along with confirmation bias... always makes for a great hot take conspiracy.
I don't always agree with you, but honestly at this point sometimes it appears you're the only poster who still has a head on his shoulders. It's very to easy to understand. The part that's hard to believe is that you have all the information on the subject.
And even if it were true, I'd have a problem that a coach as legendary as Trotz was let go in favor of a few disgruntled players...Who never would've reached the success they did without him.
The Isles let the most talented employee they had go. That isn't a recipe for success.
Well this seems to directly contradict your previous post. We went from, "Why is this so hard to understand?" to, "Who knows..."
Question is, how long will it take before Lambert and Lou no longer see eye to eye. You know it's coming because it always comes. What coach has worked under Lou who he hasn't fired? And then what will you guys say? What I see is Lou knows the Guys respond to Lambert, maybe Trotz lost the team. Lou and No Coach sees eye to eye because Lou is the Boss and He let's everybody know He is the Boss. Maybe just Maybe Trotz gave his blessing to Lambert and wanted a freash start somewhere else.
