Obviously improvements to the roster still need to be made, but one of the areas I suspect Lambert will be an improvement over Trotz is the energy and tenacity he'll bring in practice and behind the bench.

Trotz was very stoic which isn't a bad thing, but Lambert has his own style which will become more apparent now that he has the keys to the car.

Give the press conference yesterday a listen to....

The bit about "a new voice" is a heavy topic and Lou both backpedals a bit and clarifies how Lambert is still now a new voice, pointing out how that the role of a head coach and assistant coach are vastly different.
Usually head coach/assistant coach is a bad cop/good cop relationship with the team.

If the team still looked like they were burdened and not having any fun under Trotz once they started playing better in the 2nd half of the season, then I counter that maybe that's the look of a team that knows they were already dead in the standings and no real shot of making the playoffs.

If Lou is ready to give his players a pass for the season then Trotz should have gotten the same pass.

How do you know that?
Yeah, 3 games tells a lot.

Maybe they were just drained and tired. Losing is no fun. Could it be they were just business like in their approach? If they looked like they were having fun with very little shot at playoffs, after entering season as a cup favorite wouldn't they get branded as not caring?

Many a time I was told "we're here to work not to have fun"

Having a boss set standards, and holding you accountable isn't fun sometimes.

The last time DET poached an assistant from the Isles it worked out great for them and badly for us. Detroit was terrible for years and then grabbed Bill Torrey's assistant GM, Jimmy Devellano, to run the show for them. From that point on, DET's trajectory was up and the Isles was down. In retrospect, the smart move for the Isles would have been to let Torrey go and promote Devellano to be GM. But that would have seemed like a crazy move at the time and the fans would have revolted.

Ironically, Devellano's first two draft picks for DET (in the 1983 draft) were Steve Yzerman and Lane Lambert. :amazed:

I don't 100% know, and I can't remember specifics, but it was apparent that the younger forwards were put in better positions to succeed, whether it be positioning in the lineup or playing time. That alone had the team playing a little more loose...

Yeah, 3 games tells a lot.

In 3 games, with a guy who never was a head coach, you can see a difference. This is not to say this is the perfect scenario, but I can understand the move...

I'm pretty OK with this, though still not thrilled with Trotz being let go. But Lambert is almost certainly ready to be a head coach and should be a rather seamless transition. I can't think of any option I'd have preferred to have taken over for Trotz.

Also, would say the speculation that this was to ensure we don't lose both Lambert and Trotz in a year seems pretty plausible and if that is the case, I am more understanding of the move to let Trotz go.

Here’s a take from Stu Grimson. He thinks Lou wants a more authoritarian coach and that is Lane Lambert.

Grimson spoke pretty well, but I agree with him. Lambert brings more fire, I think that will rub off on the team.

But he is not! Even if Lamoriello wants us to believe it! The players know him very well, he has been with them for at least 4 years. Lambert's role will be different, but it's not a new voice, that's for sure!
Exactly. I wish people would stop overthinking this and just accept the fact that this is crazy Lou being crazy Lou. He has made such inexplicable moves in the past after relieving a coach. He oftentimes hires the assistant or himself next before stepping down or replacing the replacement in short order. See here Take what he says at face value and you will understand exactly what he means. When he meant he felt they needed a "new voice" he literally means that. He doesn't mean a new system, or accountability, or vision. He means "I just need to stick a new person in there and magic will happen". Ignoring the fact that it's the same system. The guy's basically a younger less experienced clone of Trotz. The guy followed Trotz wherever he went and worshipped him at his feet. Lou just literally wanted a different "voice" in there so he hired Lambert.

He claimed that he was putting the players on high alert. He claimed that the firing of the head coach was supposed to wake up the team. How is this waking up the team? We didn't have to lose the master to hire the apprentice but Lou knows better. We need to stop making cockimany excuses for the guy by making wild conjecture like Trotz wanted to retire. (He's too young and he will be coaching again soon), or it was all about Lou letting Barry retire early so they can hire Lambert and give Barry more family time. Like they all had some sort of secret plan (Nonsense because if it was so why give such a disparaging critique of Trotz's performance even beyond the past season and make him leave in somewhat of a disgrace). Nonsense! This conjecturing feeds into the nonsensical mystique that is Lou Lamiorello.

Like I said take what he says at face value and don't try to interpret it beyond that if you are trying to make any sense of his rational. He claimed that he was basically ok with John Tavares walking because they were not winning with him as their star player. He said if they were making the finals or if the situation "was different" maybe he would have had problems with it. This is not conjecturing by me or making some wild interpretation. This is exactly what he said. Initially I thought he was just trying to smooth out the situation with the fans, but it is clear to me now that Lou doesn't mince words. So instead of getting a brain cramp take what he means literally and then decide for yourselves if things make any rationale sense.

They don't.

I would agree it is the best situation possible as senseless as it is to me. Lambert could have taken over when Trotz contract expired if they were all working on some masterplan together. (they were not). But I wouldn't be surprised if Lambert was let go mid season next year if the results are not better than Trotz in a "normal" season. It would have made more sense just to stick with the sure thing (Trotz) if the Isles were going to maintain a defense first system. This inexplicable move is how Lou operates. Good luck with that.

And we choose LaFontaine ahead of Yzerman you have to wonder what if.

We needed a new voice in the room, so we hired the guy who was #2 in the room for the last 4 years. That is what the Islanders did. Now lets see what we do in the offseason to ensure that we are successful.

What I'm trying to say to my fellow Isles fans is stop being like these guys. Open your eyes! Where's the outrage? Where's the billboards?

and I'm more like the enraged general in this video. We need to annihilate the problem now before it becomes a bigger problem. We need to go nuclear.

ok...forget Trotz was dismissed.....say he was not going to stay beyond next year...as in was going to coach next season and move on. If at that time, Lane was the choice to replace him, would that be ok. If so, then Lane as our HC now is a good thing in so far as a hire and the right move.

Overall, i really had no one out there that intrigued me past Lane, so for me, i like the hire a lot.

I also still think there is a bit more to Trotz's dismissal not having to do with possibly losing Lane.

I totally agree with this. Nothing against Lambert, but I don't see how this makes sense. I'm curious Lou, how is this a NEW VOICE???

He walked back the new voice comment yesterday and instead said that Lambert and Trotz have very different personalities and he thinks Lane will be good for the group going forward.

I find it amusing how bent out of shape people are getting over this whole "new voice" thing.

because that is what he said the day he fired Trotz. The locker room needs a new voice. He then hires the guy whose voice was in the room.

Put this in the Trotz thread also.....maybe Lou has lost it?

If he goes to Winnipeg then that throws out the rumor that he wants to be a GM.

Trotz and Bailey to Winnipeg for Ehlers?

Wait and see on Lambert. Who knows where he was with regards to decision making for the team. Staff will be interesting. Some references to Chara and Green in earlier posts. Who wouldn't advocate for Chara as strength, conditioning and general nastiness coach? Oates to run the PP?
