According to some posters:

- ...
- He can't offend

Oh he appears to offend plenty of Habs fans.

(Mod)

He has a lot to learn on the defensive side.

Unfortunately not in the NCAA. He's just dominating that league outrageously and will probably win the Hobey Baker award this season. He can just outscore all his failings in Collegiate. Maybe in the A facing bigger, tougher opposition and also teams employing better tactics it'll force him to adapt and improve. I'm also afraid that if he gets to the NHL right away he'll simply become a niche type player. The type of garbage D-Man that survives because he can put up 40 pts per season.

The more i watch Lane Hutson, the more i think he should be a forward.
for sure in my view there is a distinct possibility he'll be a forward at the NHL level.

Also in my view, there area distinct number of posters that either don't want to or can't see that possibility.

According to some posters:

- He can't skate backwards
- He can't skate forward
- He's slow
- He's smol
- He can't defend
- He can't offend

To be fair, some of these are just plain true. Not liking the truth doesn't change anything.

That Ray Bourque fella can't skate backwards the Bruins should trade him

What are you talking about........this is a 500 foot tall strawman my friend.

Because it's fan fiction. About as likely as trading Monahan for a 1st and then resigning him.

It's also simplistic. The offense provided by a defender is not equivalent to that provided by a winger. The first foes breakout passes and scans the offensive zone from the corner of a power play. The second wins board battles and crashes the net. (I know I simplified things). They're not the same even if they're described by the same word ("offense").

It's kind of like different chess pieces. Both pawns and knights and rooks can attack, but they do so in different ways.

I get your point, but why would Hutson need to be a power forward type on the wing?

Plenty of wingers are more on the skills side.... actually its the position where those small stature players tend to do well. Caufield, Gaudreau for example aren't the types to physically dominate/crash the net, yet arenreally good (in Gaudreau's case earlier in his career).

There are reasons why moving Hutson to forward wouldnt be a winning strategy, but him not crashing the net isnt one ...

B.U. hosts Merrimack tonight(puck drop at 6 p.m. Eastern) and will not play again until Dec. 29 at Yale.

And he won't be in the lineup on the 29th. Possibly last time to see Lane at Boston University until either 5th or 9th of January. Final of the World Jrs. is on the 5th of January.

True but there have been players that have gone from one to the other, or done well in both positions.

Wendell Clarke was originally a dman.
Markov a forward.
Brent Burns and Byfuglien played well at forward before settling in on D.
Mark Streit scored 60 points as a forward/pp specialist on D before going back to D 5 on 5.

The NHL is becoming more and more suited to the smaller dman, so Hutson is coming through the pipeline at a great time. It's an era where a little Quinn Hughes can be the face of how a great dman looks like.

I don't know if he will translate to the NHL, but I will say that if it turns out that they are trying to convert him to forward, then it would be an indication that its not working out.

He’s like Caufield.

Honestly, he’s doing so well. Thrilled to see it and I really hope his game can translate.
Something needs to give and go the Habs way at some point. It might turn out that he’s the superstar in all of this. It happens to other teams … so it’s “possible”

The way the game is played nowaday, with forwards and defense free-flowing and switching positions to generate confusion and opportunities, I think Hudon is fine at D. He's not a forward, he's a point guard.

Give me a 2007-2008 Mark Streit anytime!
Mark Streit seems low key a very underrated player. He was absolute gold here following his first rocky season in NA and had a great career as a number 2 throughout his career. Dynamite IQ.
