He's very effective at burst of speeds and mobility but he won't catch a good skater on a breakaway. For the number of times it happens in an actual game, it's not a real issue. The skating element for his style of play (burst of speed) is top notch.
not many players get to carry the puck the length of the ice, so he gets to pick up speed on a much more regular basis than most. he also keeps his range of motion pretty tight, in that he doesn't steer east-west too much when he goes up the ice. his rushes are contained to tighter spaces because of his quick hands and headfakes.
He's making me realize that no Habs were even close to being good since Kovalev.

I prefer Suzuki over kovy (Habs). Sure kovy when he's on was top 10 in the league easy. But I'll take the guy who shows up almost all the time, plays a complete game and is easy to play with

I've seen him lose quite a few footraces.
I'm not saying the guy's slow but I wouldn't call him fast either. I'd say he's really, really shifty on his skates.

That's how I'd rank it from the old regime.
Going forward, I'd say Hutson will actually be better than PK Subban. That is saying a lot as Subban was at his peak a top three blueliner in the game. I don't think he'll reach Price's peak but he will likely have a better career than either one of those players as long as he can stay healthy. He will also (hopefully) have a shot at some cups.
As for Suzuki, I'm not sure where I'd put him. He's ahead of Max for sure. Better than Kovalev? Offensively I don't think so. Defensively he's definitely better. Markov was pretty great too.
I still think Caufield has a good chance of surpassing Suzuki. But he'll have to hit on 50 goals consistently. A pretty tall order. It'll be interesting to look back on this ten years from now and see who's where. Hutson has a shot at being our best and then there's Demidov.

I used to think the same but I also see him beat guys on the outside with net drive. So he's got good speed at least for certain instances.... I think the nhl stats also show his top speeds are higher than Quinn Hughes.

I knew he would be a good one down the line but to think he would be second in Ice time on the team all while defending at a high level in his first year is crazy to me , my pesimistic heart wouldn't have believed you.

It's the most outstanding and mind boggling aspect of this player's debut in the NHL.
His powers of recuperation are off the charts. I remember two seasons ago when we started all those rookie Dmen.
They ALL hit a wall before game 40 with far less ice time and except for Guhle much softer match ups.

Exactly; there's a great deal of equivocation going on when discussing his skating and defining it as "good" or "poor" in quality. There are certain aspects to his skating that are exceptional, and others, like acceleration, it seems, that are average at best.

A guy who’s 6’4 is going to have bigger strides than a smaller player. It’s just physics providing an advantage.
The numbers that are posted here just don’t jive with what I’ve seen. I don’t consider Hutson a speedster. I think he’s very, very shifty and great at turning on a dime but top speed I don’t see as a strength.

I think he's an awesome skater. Speed wise I don't think he's as fast as he's being made out to be. Those numbers just don't jive with what I've seen.
No offense, but "what you've seen" doesn't really mean anything. He might not be the fastest straight line player in the league, but he's obviously not slow either, and has more bursts of speed than the vast majority of NHL defensemen.
Your subjective opinion, once invalidated by data, should be subject to revision. That it hasn't is a reflection on you, not on Hutson.

I'm mostly impressed with how quickly he's adapted his game. After his start, I think he struggled a bit given how the other team's forecheckers were able to contain him a bit. They are back to struggling against him now.
