the fact that he hasn't given out a 5-8 yr contract to anybody today is a win

we have to adjust our expectations, in order to see the clear wins here today guys

all his contracts can be bought out on the cheap, that's the win of the day
And everyone of those contracts can go to the AHL with no implication on the salary cap.

My only problem is, will there going to be a bunch of bitching on this board when Trevor Lewis or England gets assigned to the AHL?

He also brought back JAD on a two Way league minimum contract.

Who knows what Blake has of his sleeve Maybe there’s a possible trade in place for Lizotte and Lewis is a security blanket for JAD as the 4th line center.

I just have to tell myself it’s only July 1

I like Lewis for the 4th line and PK.

England I don’t even blink at, he is the thinnest of attempts at presenting competition in camp for the young blueliners. AHL bound.

Talbot definitely wouldn’t have been my first pick. At least we’ll be able to use our LTIR space with him. Guess we are still loading up the money canon for old man Hellebyuck.

goddamnit stop talking me back from the cliff

A little of subject, but watching Brian Burke on the NHL network, is like watching an Al Pacino movie now. It's like a demented Grandpa walked on the set, and he's kind of there, but somebody tell him he's there

Bergevin takes over when Blake is gone.

Something to think about also - Kayilev and Byfield do NOT require waivers if they are sent to Ontario...

Fagemo, Bjornfot, and JAD require waivers.

Spence and Clarke do NOT require waivers.

If either QB or Kayilev struggle, the Kings could send them down.

Why would the Kings sign a 27 year old big LHD to a 2 million 2 year deal and assign him to Ontario.
2nd year makes it less likely teams will posch him if he's sent to the AHL for depth recall purposes, assuming they have cap space for recalls.

Probably won’t but at least it’s an option knowing that most teams won’t like that second year and that they have a Merc on standby if needed

We have the unique situation of not having to carry a full roster when we’re at home with our AHL team being right across the hallway. It’s not a plane ride halfway across the country. It’s a phone call and a 20 minute drive to the arena. Have a player called up if there’s a last minute injury.

The same thing can be thought for a possible mercenary. With the extra year and the extra money on the contract, they can shuttling back-and-forth between the AHL and the NHL, depending on who they think is needed in the lineup any given night. They probably don’t have to worry about losing to waivers if he’s not performing he can stay in the AHL. If he performs above expectations, then we have a surprise in the NHL.

It’s all about pinching pennies until the deadline.

That’s why it’s not a big deal to have a 22 man roster versus a 23 man roster when your AHL team is basically in-house and practices at the same barn

Many NHL teams have done this in the past.

20 minute drive to the Arena? Is it Superbowl Sunday?

Last season's Toronto Leafs/Marlies are in the same situation and I think you're underselling it. It was an absolute shit show to the penny every day.

It's far more inconvenient than "less than ideal."

Capfriendly has Englund's contract being 1-way. You're not signing a guy to that deal for 2 years if you're not at least pencilling him in for the opening night roster. Blake signed a tweener for $1M when we couldn't even ice a full roster if we had signed all league minimum players.

The grand solution to our cap crunch is going to wind up being playing with a 21 man roster and lose Bjornfot and Fagemo to waivers. Masterclass.

I don't know why everyone is so surprised by these moves, we literally can only afford the bottom of the barrel guys that we can waive and send down without a cap penalty and low risk of being claimed. Today we need bodies. We are going to have weaknesses to start the season, but there will also be opportunities for the kids on ELCs to earn a spot and it'll be a make or break year for several of them.
We can only afford the bottom of the barrel guys because Blake overpaid for Gavrikov, PLD when cheaper, better options were out there that addressed more of the team's needs.

Talbot...not horrible...not great. Feeds my theory that the team identity is changing. No longer a defense first team. We just don't have the players. Gonna be more offensive and let loose a bit. Team will have some lapses. If he wanted the build from the back out, he would have cut loose Copley and signed Korpi to the 4 mil/year and made adjustment to keep him and brought in a scrub at 1 million or league min as a bad up. Team is going in a diff direction. I just don't know if he knows.

A little butt hurt Korpi went another way but I get it. Life span in hockey isn't forever and he needs to get paid. He's worth it and got his long term deal on a shit team but would have liked more of him.

and next year when we need an extra $1M to get a goalie (or LHD, size/toughness) but we lose out to someone else....then what. I'm ok losing space for next year on something worthwhile and that might help us win a SC...but Talbot?!? ok, prove me wrong.

It's the same thing when we lose draft picks away. People say big deal. ok, but those are assets/bullets for you to utilize. The less you have, the weaker you are in attempting to get talent. Stop thinking in a vacuum and see the big pic
I understand the argument but it doesn’t hold much merit..
The reduction in Kopi’s salary likely covers a few RFA’s and more if he up and retires since some here think he’s done anyways..
Matt Roy is likely on his way out via a sign and trade to get us some value as will Arvy so cap space isn’t going to be a problem.. that’s like $12 mil to build out the roster and that’s assuming absolutely none of the kids play their way onto the roster.
Too many variables involved to cry about cap space next season when a lot of salary will be shed.. assuming some of you get your wish and Kopitar does retire(at which point we’re f***ed) then your talking about $30mil in cap space to build out this roster for the next generation.. who knows maybe Doughty whines his way out of town and into Toronto

Signed an extension with the Wings, but you missed my point.
I wouldn't give the keys to this development staff to my 91 Cavalier let alone handing them a 2023 Corvette in hopes they don't crash it.
Now you are speaking my language, nice analogy!
And you won on Luff too.
You definitely go the last Luff on this one!
