I typically enjoy Hoven and Bernstein’s interviews, but holy moly Hoven suggested playing Thompson over Byfield the first 10 games of the season in their last podcast episode. It puts into perspective the arguments we’re having here.
Someone actually said that and wasnt joking?

He was serious, though he did previously say he believed Thompson would most likely be in the AHL if signed past his PTO. He said it could create a roster spot because QB is waiver exempt, which also doesn’t make sense because Thompson would be taking that spot over a guy who actually needs a look like JAD, Vilardi, etc.

Total lunacy for anyone to think thats a good idea at the NHL level. Even the AHL roster is pretty packed and there is no need for him there either. If hes signed and played over Byfield I think that is my cue to quit going to games and supporting the business. I will not pay to watch Thompson.

Settle down with the dramatics, boys. He was throwing a hypothetical question out to Bernstein….’would you possibly do this to add some extra TOUGHNESS into the lineup for the start of the season. It would also make QB hungrier to get into the lineup as opposed to just handing him a spot’ — that was the gist. I don’t think anyone thinks that will actually happen unless maybe QB stinks in camp.

He said Byfield should earn his spot, and that Thompson would add toughness because he didn’t want what happened to Turcotte to happen to Kaliyev, which spectacularly ignores that he is putting Byfield in more of harm’s way playing him in the AHL in the first place.

To Bernstein’s credit he said the idea was essentially ridiculous, but how do you even suggest that when the guy is on a PTO and we’re already facing a potential 1st or 2nd round pick being lost on waivers?
It's important to remember there's a huge gap between reporting and opinion and it's not always immediately clear which is which.

Hoven is full of shit, same as he was in 2014 when he said the Kings were shopping Williams at the trade deadline. If Thompson is starting this season as 3c, the entire lot should be canned.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I know Thompson is a popular guy with the media as well, so that’ll put some opinions understandably in his favor.

On the flip side though, I’d expect someone who has covered the Kings for so long to self-edit their opinions a bit more. Thompson is a fringe NHLer at this point, we have a ton of younger, hungry players who would deserve a shot IF Byfield were put in the AHL (which Bernstein pointed out), and regardless putting Byfield in a position to succeed is probably the single most important thing the franchise can do this season for its long-term success.

Keeping Kopitar did not prevent the Kings from getting the draft capital needed to draft impact players to play with Kopitar and also for the next era of Kings hockey

Between 2017 and 2021 the Kings had picks #2, #5, #7, #11, #18 and #22.

What changes happen if Kopitar is traded? Unless they got an already developed young star.

Christ. If Bernstein had to be the voice of reason that must have been a rough episode.

I'm surprised they aren't calling Nate "The Thomfather" or some shit.

And yet some people act like John Hoven has any credibility when he’s essentially A hybrid of Eklund and Axl Rhoadz.

I would listen to an @Axl Rhoadz pod all day before taking any suggestions from those two.

Actually I think a Sol and Axl podcast would do numbers

I mean if Kopitar is traded then they draft high in 2018...but seeing what they've done you can't convince me they don't draft Barret Hayton and we're still here going 'wtf'

Edit: actually I seem to recall they really wanted Farabee which would have been an awesome pick.

Alright you better give me an empty check book to subject myself to Axl

And they would have had to move up many spots in 2017 to get a potential difference maker too. After Pettersson went picks 6-11 were all pretty awful.

2019 they would have had to win the lottery to get a true difference maker. Maybe if they get 3-4 they take Byram but they were in a fine position where they ended up in this universe to get a difference maker and didn’t. Even say they get Byram, is he that big a needle mover? Great prospect no doubt but the only guy who went 1-5 in the actual draft who is a big star is J Hughes. 6-10 was better than 1-5.

2020 and 2021 they like who they got. Laf is in a similar spot to QB. I’ve obviously seen most of the guys who went above Clarke in 2021 and to me the only guy I can say who will 100% be better is Hughes, who has legit superstar potential. I don’t think any of the others really do. Would I take Power over Clarke? Ya, but I don’t think the gap in upside is very big at all. And we know had the Kings taken Hughes they’d have tried to sign him and have him wasting away “learning the system” in the AHL.

The Kings would have no 1C for last year (a playoff year) and this year (another hopeful playoff year). And if QB gets the ice time they are claiming then Kopitar isn’t holding him back. Vilardi, Turcotte, Kupari and JAD were never going to challenge for Kopi’s role no matter what. Now he can make the transition easier for a player who has a chance to potentially do that down the road.

Kopi's zombieness seems to be going away as he ages....

I have no issues if they wanted Thompson at the expense of any of the waiver wire warriors. Who cares, the organization doesn’t believe in any of them to play a role on the team, if anyone needed more proof of that the camp groups putting Fagemo in for an injured VA and Kupari in for a resting Danault hammered that home even more, it’s all about saving face at this point. Thompson was awful his last time here, but as a healthy scratch who adds some leadership and is willing to get tomato canned if need be he is more useful than Lias or Vilardi sitting in the press box.

Now I am on board with everyone else, if QB were to be sent down to the AHL to keep Nate Thompson on the roster you just have to throw in the towel on this group management team. But I doubt that would even be in consideration, as others said, Mayor is usually spot on with his news reporting but his opinions can be horrific. But it’s important we differentiate between news and opinion.

Good lord….ridiculously dumb take.
