I typically enjoy Hoven and Bernstein’s interviews, but holy moly Hoven suggested playing Thompson over Byfield the first 10 games of the season in their last podcast episode. It puts into perspective the arguments we’re having here.
He said Byfield should earn his spot, and that Thompson would add toughness because he didn’t want what happened to Turcotte to happen to Kaliyev, which spectacularly ignores that he is putting Byfield in more of harm’s way playing him in the AHL in the first place.
To Bernstein’s credit he said the idea was essentially ridiculous, but how do you even suggest that when the guy is on a PTO and we’re already facing a potential 1st or 2nd round pick being lost on waivers?
