A guess on CalPete mental issue : its having a HOF caliber fan favorite you have to take over from.. esp when you shit yourself continually already.. guessing there is part of his soul that just cant root for himself over JQ. I would have a hard time with it myself. Aside from that, i never liked his style - its all positioning no athleticism - the opposite of JQ. Its a surprising big miss from an evaluation standpoint.. they must have really like his style and attittude to give him 5x3.. which unfortunately is just starting this year.

Genuine question. Do you know if they have tried to change his game, or did they take an approach similar to Imoo? I’ve not followed his development closely enough.

I guess as they hold his rights, if he suddenly makes a jump in level they can retain him. I have wondered though if this is a deliberate plan to give him AHL time, whilst simultaneously not taking a contract spot. Has there been any comment on the plan with him, because it’s surely better than sending him to the ECHL. I realise that I’m most likely over thinking it, as I tend to do.

It‘d be a shame if he doesn’t make it but I always felt he was a boom/bust pick.
I don't know for certain. I'm just responding to the quotes offered by Hoven, where they say he's stubborn and that he's wanting to stay with what he's done in the past because it worked for him. Granted, it's tea leaf reading and assumption based on a quote, but usually that means there's a divide between what the organization wants him to do and what he wants to do.

I truly don't think having him play on another AHL team is a big brain play to develop him without taking up a contract. If they were that hopeful for him, they'd not have signed Hrenak to a contract. Or loan one of these players to another organization.

At this point, I think it's reasonable to believe the org is ready to part ways with him. They're just waiting for the contract to run out. Of course, if things change (i.e. he has a magical AHL season) I'm sure they'd reevaluate. But I'd be more surprised if he's still a part of the org on June 1, 2023.

I feel like Dumba will be pinched out in Minnesota. I wonder if this will put them in the RHD market next offseason.
Durizi ++ for Wallstedt is where my head is at. Fantasy I know

Mikey’s been banking NHL paychecks for 3 seasons now. Durzi not so much. I think that explains what each guy signed for this offseason. Both guys are betting on themselves to at least triple their salary on their next deal.

I don't think that the Kings will ever really get to know what Peterson is capable of unless they give him the keys and see how he settles in as a starter.

Can't imagine how difficult it must be to mentally prepare for a role in which you can sit after one bad game or even if you win a few in a row like last year. Its such a pyschologically demanding position and has to be a real challenge to not have the opportunity to get on a real roll and face a never-ending cycle of stops and starts.

Not saying he is necessarily the short or long term answer, but its not like Quick is setting the world on fire at this stage of his career. Perhaps the best course of action is to learn just what you have in Cal and leave the sentimentality to the side. If Cal fails, you know that your capital needs to be spent on shoring up the goal.
Wasn't that the plan last season at first? I remember they made a big deal out of the fact that the season opener was the first time Quick hadn't started it since he became the number one. I feel like they tried to give him the keys

See how the season goes and if all is well, sign him to a 1 yr deal. LA has nobody knocking on the door that Quick is holding back.
Yeah, but there are two concerns there.

Is this franchise, who bends over backwards for "it's guys" going to tell Quick that he is a backup?
Will Quick be content in that role or will be looking for a better promise than that?

And secondly, Quick is no longer anything special. He is just an average, run of the mill goaltender at this stage of his career. If Peterson doesn't earn the job, why extend Quick instead of looking for a better, longterm solution?

Obviously all that is moot if Quick has a great year, but its been a loooooooong time since that was the case.

Peterson earned it based off of the previous year and that camp, but it was made clear from the start that it was going to be a platoon. Both guys were sat out after wins, it was a plan to switch it up and often discussed during the broadcasts. Sure seemed more based out of respect for what Quick had done before than based on what he had done over the previous season or two.

Seems like two 1B's and zero 1A's. And both played that way last year, not much to choose between the two despite the goodwill Quick has banked.

I know you said fantasy and ++, but if Durzi improves enough to be the main piece for Wallstedt he'll no longer be cheap, and cheap is what Minnesota will need. We also already know that Blake/Yanetti tried to trade with Minnesota to get their pick and take Wallstedt, but they didn't budge. It makes sense; again they'll need emerging star players on cheap deals contributing and Wallstedt will be cheap whenever he makes the NHL.

Damn...was last season really THAT FAR AWAY for you?

Quick had a below career average year last year. It just happened to be better than his previous couple of years.

As for the rest of what Bland said, the team didn't bend over backwards for Quick the past 2 seasons. He was clearly the backup in the short 21 season when he had 10 less starts and 13 less games played than Pederson. They broke his opening night starting streak last season. I'd say the team has been trying to move on for a couple of years. Quick responded last year while Pederson choked.

I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s below average. Last season, Quick posted a 2.59 GAA and .910 save %. Yes that was below his career average of 2.42 and .913%, and that was his best season in 5 seasons. But last season was the highest scoring season in the nhl since 1996, averaging 3.14 goals. For reference, the kings won the jennings trophy 5 seasons ago, largely due to the defensive dominance of the team, and scoring was averaging 2.97 league wide. 2021-22 Quick was great, with context in mind.

yup in any other job petersen would have been fired last year.

They took Quick's starter job away already.

They had to give it back to him because Cal couldn't beat him out.

Quick had the 5th best goals saved above expected per 60 last year among all starters.

The Kings do need to solve their goaltending situation, but quantity of starts isn't the reason for Cal's struggles.

And that was with our defense going through the meat grinder… he was actually at #1 or close to it for about 1/4 of the season

I typically enjoy Hoven and Bernstein’s interviews, but holy moly Hoven suggested playing Thompson over Byfield the first 10 games of the season in their last podcast episode. It puts into perspective the arguments we’re having here.

He said Byfield should earn his spot, and that Thompson would add toughness because he didn’t want what happened to Turcotte to happen to Kaliyev, which spectacularly ignores that he is putting Byfield in more of harm’s way playing him in the AHL in the first place.

To Bernstein’s credit he said the idea was essentially ridiculous, but how do you even suggest that when the guy is on a PTO and we’re already facing a potential 1st or 2nd round pick being lost on waivers?
