This is hilarious. On one hand, Dubas overpaid a star player by $2 million. On the other hand, JFJ literally got confused as to who he was signing and offered a fringe NHLer a $3.5 million per year contract (in an era where the cap was much lower).

Yes. Totally the same.
Marner's overpayment keeps going up and up. I remember the good old days when he was overpaid by only 500k

Then I am the 1%. At that time, as enticing as JT was, it was D that they needed. They still had Kadri as their #2 centre, who was more than adequate. And don't give me the crap about Naz riding himself out of town. We would kill to have a player with that grit and heart now.
I would be interested in seeing some proof. Seems like everyday there are more and more people claiming they were the 1%.

Dubas inherited a team where his best players were kids and the defense was trash. Teams like that don't win the cup easily unless the kids are Crosby and Malkin. And inherit doesn't tell the full story because he's been grinding for the team since the Hyman trade. He didn't just pop out of no where. His mark was on the team before getting promoted.

He does deserve some criticism since we have first round woes and there were some things that could have went differently, but not the kind of criticism where a poll exists and JFJ is actually getting votes.

This is honestly a new low for this board. Just adds to how shameful and embarrassing this season has been. Maybe you guys need another decade of Stajans and Antropovs to see how good you have it.

Concluding his drafting sucks when we literally have two defenders who have won top D at the juniors since Dubas took over: Sandin and Niemela. Robertson will have the second best shot on the team when he finally makes it. Amirov has the potential to be better than anything JFJ drafted excluding Rask (which shouldn't even count because he traded him stupidly). That's all since when, 2o18? With this kind of drafting he will easily smash JFJ. None of you would swap out Sandin, Niemela, Robertson for guys like Frattin, Stalberg, Tlusty Holzer etc. We used to cry for draft steals, now when we finally get them every single year since Dubas took over...he's being compared to JFJ.

"Dubas sucks because I'm salty and because I say so " is basically all I see.

The dubas fan boys have been closing their eyes and plugging their ears anytime valid criticism of dubas is brought up so I'm not surprised you don't "see" anything.

How do you inherit a 105 point team and have nothing to show for it after 3 years?

He's lost most of his trades.

Overpaid all 3 rfas.

Sparks over mcbackup lol

Hiring his BFF to coach the leafs.

Dubas has been a complete failure. Anyone still chearing for him is not a real leaf fan. How can you support a gm who is actively hurting the franchise?

JFJ is worse, because of his Rask for Raycroft deal. That's probably the worst trade in the history of the franchise. And almost everybody agreed at the time it was horrible.

They are both bad at cap-management, they both trade 1st round picks for either overrated players or players that didn't lead to any winning or bad situations.

I'm more forgiving to JFJ, because he had to handle the introduction of the cap and Richard "basketball is my passion" Peddie, but Rask for Raycroft kills him every time.

Nonis is easily the worst GM though in the last 25 years and its not even a debate

I've soured on Dubas as time has gone on (ironically because he's not as much of an analytically-inclined GM as I thought and a lot of his moves fly in the face of public analytics).

But c'mon...this shouldn't be close. JFJ made comically bad errors. He's like a Jim Benning.

The scary thing about Dubas is we don't know what the long term fallout of his actions will be over the next few years. Keep in mind he's emptied out a lot of assets to balance the cap already before going 'all-in' this year. A lot of this hinges on how strong his recent drafts actually were, how fast those picks pay off and how competitive the Leafs can stay over the next few years before our key free agents are up.

This discussion is missing some of the most memorable GMs in Leafs history. Here is my list of the four worst. Feel free to disagree.

Punch Imlach (second time)

July 4, 1979 – October 1981

Destroyed a team that had made the Cup semi-finals, including trading HOFers Darryl Sittler and Lanny MacDonald for very little.

Floyd Smith

August 15, 1989 – June 4, 1991

Traded an unprotected first round draft choice for Tom Kurvers. When Toronto was in last place and in danger of qualifying for first pick overall, (Eric Lindros), compounded his mistake by trading a whack of young players for aging veterans. Toronto finished third last and lost out on Scott Niedemayer instead of Lindros.

Gord Stellick

April 28, 1988 – August 11, 1989

Who can forget the infamous Russ Courtnall and a draft pick for John Kordic? Or overruling his scouts to draft Luke Richardson instead of Joe Sakic?

John Ferguson Junior

August 29, 2003 – January 22, 2008

Inherited Pat Quinn’s team that made the playoffs every year, won a division title, and was viewed as a legitimate Stanley Cup contender and turned it into a non-playoff team full of no-trade contracts.

99% of people loved the Tavares signing, and yet, here you are blaming him for it now. If that's not a Leaf fan thing to do than I don't know what is.
I’d say the vast majority liked it but not as high as 99%. The signing thread would be out there somewhere to validate your number if you so choose.

Didn't like it from day one only the coolaid drinkers who has no idea what a hockey team is suppose to build like would have have liked that the JT signing

Out of how many years, though? He also only made the playoffs once.

I honestly can't tell the difference between out of the playoffs by one point, or badly outplay by the opponent and lose in round one. Both scenarios are equally embarrassing.

But like I said, JFJ's teams had one playoff series win, relatively speaking that was an accomplishment, so I think Dubas is worse.

In the 1% as well lol

I picked Dubas because JFJ didn't fall into a team loaded with young core players in Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Hyman, Kapanen and Kadri with John F'N Tavares on the way.

The surrounding pieces Dubas has brought, aside from Muzzin and Brodie, have been disasters and I believe more then 50% of other GMs would have built a better team that could at least win 1 damn round. Spezza doesn't count as he most likely came home regardless.

This off season is his last chance, he should already have been fired imo, a waterboy or "equipment manager" should never have been given a NHL GM job.
