Out of town for a bachelor party.. come home to this...
I've made no effort to hide that I've appreciated Dubas' time here. Classy, well run organization, strong (early returns) on drafting, good recruiting and talent identification, perennially top team that has never been really hamstrung, always had the flexibility to tweak or even take things in a completely different direction in the offseason.
That being said- was fine with his departure going into this offseason. Running back the core 4 was gambling his job with the Leafs. Winning a round and coming back looking at rectifying at that mistake put things in a grey zone where I was kind of ambivalent. 7 years is 7 years, and regardless of how healthy the org is and how high performing they were in the regular season, the lack of playoff runs makes a good argument for cold, calculated change with a clear vision for what comes next.
But where we are now and how things went down... just wow. Shooting from the hip based on reaction to a press conference/ negotiation..... not cold, calculated change with a clear vision for what comes next. In the space of three days went from a relatively safe place where a GM could evaluate Matthews (publicly stated) intention to re-sign and either trade him or not, to one with no-one in charge and almost no chance of getting a commitment without paying through the nose.
I think Shanny needs to step into the role and take ownership of this offseason. An interim is a lameduck, no credibility with Matthews/Nylander and to a lesser extent Samsonov outside of money. Can a new hire come in, evaluate, chart a course, build those relationships, and execute in 4-6 weeks? Tall order.
Time is ticking here and we have no GM. Sort of embarrassing
Kids finish school end of June .. he becomes Mr Good dad for a year .. short commute in his Tesla to Tecumseh and back everyday .. gives Shannon a nice rest .. she will start hating on him being around too much with kids and then they go into counselling .. then he finds another job in hockey next year as $$$ will dry up faster then he thinks .. then he gets a condo in his new town and does a Shanny commute back and forth from Pearson on weekends .. 3 years into it he get divorced .. you can write da book alreadyI don't think he goes to Pittsburgh. I think he'll end up in Ottawa. That will be friggin painful, if Dubas in Ottawa hands it to us. Literally a worst case scenario.

Trading won't occur until after the Cup final. The draft and free agency are still a month and a bit out.Time is ticking here and we have no GM. Sort of embarrassing
Neely in Boston is hands on as Im sure many presidents are. Dubas is like a petulant child and the entitlement is stunning. "Yea so Ill maybe come back if I get lots more money" and..."Id like you guys at the top to change the way you run things and watch and learn from me k?" Guy was a nobody and given the chance of a lifetime. Poor Kyle had to run things past his boss? Are you fkn kidding me?There's a reason why most GMs tend to hold both the GM AND President position simultaneously - or work for an org that the President strictly stays focused on business not hockey ops decisions.
The Leafs setup was fairly unique. Burke as President in Pittsburgh was sort of similar to Shanny I guess.
In retrospect we can see why this set-up may not be ideal, especially as Dubas' gained more experience,he'd likely want to be more assertive ect
Mirtle to be on Leafs Lunch at 1 pm. Sounds like he is doing the damage control rounds for his BFF.Mirtle on the Fan outlining the potential chaos that looms, so many critical questions for the team. Bunkis points out Dubas brought us here. What to do with Matthews? Maybe not let him become a UFA at 26 freaking years old lol.
Except if youve been or feel like you have been blindsided and knifed in the back. If you f*** me over that much that I want to rescind the contract I had ready for you then you do whatever you have to do before the well is poisoned any further and deal with whatever the fallout is.Something Leiweke said when I worked at MLSE has stuck with me years later: “If you’re going to get rid of someone, you better have someone better in mind.” I’ve seen quite a few names in the rumor mill, and I’m not sure any of them are better than Dubas. From a hockey standpoint, there will be arguments.
“LEAVE DUBIE ALONE!”Mirtle to be on Leafs Lunch at 1 pm. Sounds like he is doing the damage control rounds for his BFF.
He’s a smart guy, but his bias is so obvious here I can’t even listen to him. He was preaching chaos and doom on 590 this morning and then when reminded Dubas had to deal with the same issues he mentioned, he just mumbled and moved on. We get it, your bud is gone, happened to Dregs, being an insider is fun while it lasts.Mirtle to be on Leafs Lunch at 1 pm. Sounds like he is doing the damage control rounds for his BFF.

Opinion isn’t “news” dude. Mirtle is a partisan here and you can’t deny that lens when accessing the validity of his viewpoint. Let’s ask Mike Babcock his opinion, is that worth our time here? The best though is Jonas, the guy sounds like his favourite show was cancelled.Weird that we've got to separate news into good news, and enemy news, when it does, or doesn't fit our narrative.
Ok dude.. change the word "news" to opinion, and dude, it's still the same point.Opinion isn’t “news” dude. Ya no it isn’t at all and if you can’t see that…Ok dude.. change the word "news" to opinion, and dude, it's still the same point.
This is true but obviously Dubas brought out the "Shanny the player" in Shanny and Shanny the player would never let anyone fk him over without fkn them right back but harder. If he just said "It's a results-oriented business so we decided to go another direction" the media would have moved on quicker.
Shanny erased him along the wall. Now build a team like you. This is true but obviously Dubas brought out the "Shanny the player" in Shanny and Shanny the player would never let anyone fk him over without fkn them right back but harder.
Yea, I'm sure they are all sitting around the office playing solitaire and tetris while they wait for Shanahan to come down from the mountain with the new tablets.4 days post Dubas being let go, and still no trace of a Shanaplan 2.0. Not even a whisper. I love having no direction heading into one of the busiest off-season's in recent history.
yes pleaseShanny erased him along the wall. Now build a team like you.
You'll make it through this.Time is ticking here and we have no GM. Sort of embarrassing
you cannot leave the fox in the hen house, you just cantCertainly in a much, much worse position than a week ago when he was our GM. What can I say that hasn't been said? A short sighted emotional move with no backup plan in a timeframe where we need all hands on deck. Can't wait to hire a boomer GM who is going to sign Gudbranson type contracts again or David Clarksons out there in the name of toughness.
Can't wait to watch the org lose the core for nothing and then sit there in a Sundin situation times 1000 worse while we have no first the follow year after Matthews walks. Let's see what short sighted move the boomer GM makes to desperately remain a playoff team that handcuffs us back into being a bubble team on the outside looking in for years until Shanny is fired.
Then we wait to see if MLSE ever approves another rebuild considering it took decades to do it once already.
