Kyle Dubas’ 5 worst moves during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs - The Leafs Nation

By Joseph Zita

Just like my previous article about Kyle Dubas’ five best moves during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t write a follow-up article on his five worst moves during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1. Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot and a 2020 3rd-round pick from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen and a 2020 6th-round pick

That trade is actually wrong and worse because the actual draft picks are reversed and Leafs gave their 3rd and got the 6th in return.

Traded • Tyson Barrie • Alex Kerfoot • 2020 sixth round pick (#179-Joe Miller) to Maple Leafs for • Nazem Kadri • Calle Rosen • 2020 third round pick (#74-Jean-Luc Foudy) on 2019-07-01

PS. Jean-Luc Foudy already played 9 NHL games for the Stanley Cup reigning Avs

At least it was a classy response that Dubas just tweeted. No mudslinging. Just thanking the organization.

Shanahan probably should have just said they met with Dubas and negotiated but decided to go another direction. There was no reason to get into the whole timeline. Looks disfunctional.
I disagree. I liked that Shanahan was quite forthcoming with what transpired, and as to why Dubas was ultimately relieved of his duties. Being vague in his press conference would have led to even more questions than answers, and it would have been picked apart ten-fold in particular by this city's media.

If he turned on Shanny, as appears likely, he may never work again. Shanny gave him his start as a baby, no one else will trust him.
Hope he gets the Pittsburgh job then we can trade Marner there.

Rakell + A Nylander + 2023 1st + 2024 1st

Kyle is going to be very lucky if he lands another gig. Very very lucky after that presser stunt and the way it's being framed as a power grab, ouch. Can you imagine the execs over in Pits contacting MLSE for a heads up to feel that out?

Not good.
He will

If he just said "It's a results-oriented business so we decided to go another direction" the media would have moved on quicker.

The organization is butchered because Dubas is gone eh?

Certainly in a much, much worse position than a week ago when he was our GM. What can I say that hasn't been said? A short sighted emotional move with no backup plan in a timeframe where we need all hands on deck. Can't wait to hire a boomer GM who is going to sign Gudbranson type contracts again or David Clarksons out there in the name of toughness.

Can't wait to watch the org lose the core for nothing and then sit there in a Sundin situation times 1000 worse while we have no first the follow year after Matthews walks. Let's see what short sighted move the boomer GM makes to desperately remain a playoff team that handcuffs us back into being a bubble team on the outside looking in for years until Shanny is fired.

Then we wait to see if MLSE ever approves another rebuild considering it took decades to do it once already.

The first paragraph is concerning... Did he want to trade core 4 players and Shanahan said no?
I don't care who the GM is, the core 4 need to be broken up.
I took it more as he was given 1 more chance with building around the core 4, it failed again, so if he stayed he'd have to do some very controversial transactions.

Oh the drama
Dubas was such a success here - the organization is doomed now! !!!
If the core doesn't want to be here because they're buddy gm is gone - buh bye. No country clubs anymore

That's impossible. There have been zero player transactions in the past week.

The whole organization is done because they have 4,750 muppets running around pretending to work and coming with bright ideas in a think tank environment. That 4,750 is the actual number of employees MLSE has lol

So maybe 300 of them are high level muppets.

I find that to be a pretty naïve take. Multi-billion dollar businesses always have contingency operations plans and more significantly, succession plans.
What is naïve about that take?

Shanny came out and said that up until last Monday, Kyle was the man he wanted to be the GM of the club going forward. He had no succession plan in place, as he didn't feel the need to have one. It is only now, that he has to search for one.

Is it possible that Shanny felt threatened by the potential of an inferior position making the same amount of money as him and given full autonomy by the club??? To me that sounds more realistic. It kind of puts Shanny's role into a bit of a redundancy if Kyle were to be given full autonomy as well as a similar wage.

I think it's pretty clear that there was some contention between Kyle and Shanny this past year. This kind of looks like it was Kyle's way of putting the fire on Shanny from a board perspective. It wouldn't have taken long for the board to start asking Shanny what it is he was providing to the club if Kyle was given full control. No wonder Shanny didn't advocate for his extension thereafter. This had nothing to do with Shanny not feeling good about Kyle being the GM. He made that abundantly clear that he did. This was a power struggle between both Kyle and Shanny, and Shanny was not willing to relinquish his standing in the organizational pecking order. Despite it likely being what was best for our club.

That appears to be the case... yes. According the Chris Johnston, Shanahan has called the core 4, and assured them that they are all in the future plans of the org.
