What does he do then? Why is making 6 or 7 million for almost a decade while not having much to do with the on ice product? I assume he must make a mean Frappuccino for Larry and the Bell/Rogers guys.

He runs the off ice operations, business side and deals with the board

When everyone talks about how well the organization is run you can thank shanny for that

But yes he is also on the hot seat because Dubas who he showed incredible loyalty to decided that he wanted Shanny's job and 7 mil a year after failing as GM

I bet no lessons will be learned. Someone in the NHL will hire Kyle Dubas to be a President/GM and he'll get another playground to prove his genius. He may or may not succeed depending upon his fortune to hit on players in the lottery. He's learned a ton here. There are mistakes he probably won't make again.

I can guarantee you that:

A) Dubas will never ever walk into as cozy a situation as he did with the Leafs with a 100 pt team, plenty of cap space, plenty of picks/prospects

B) Financial leeway he received from the MLSE board

If dubas had worked for any other organization in the league his ass would have been canned long ago for the incompetence he displayed as an executive

I get more of a vibe that Shannahan wanted to extend Dubas for at least 3 (likely 4-5) years and Dubas countered with 1-2 because it actually was a rough year on his family and I can't blame him for not wanting to lock in if his family is gonna be dealing with harassment or other "fan" conflicts.
How, in the f***, did you get any of that vibe?

Probably the most amateurish thread on this forum, which says a lot. You'd think this guy touched you while you slept. Everyone from the owners down to the players failed. No one is exempt from blame. Meanwhile, you literally hate a guy and wish him hell in his life. Everyone got exactly what they wanted and you're still pissy children. Dubas and Keefe and Spezza will land somewhere and be fine. This team won't, and it'll be the same core next year failing again. You all enjoy misery and apparently drafting high more than actually winning anyway

LOL

What?

In the end, Shanahan gave the shive to Dubas. No doubt he was political, but also the closest advocate for the Leafs as an organization in the middle of all this.

To use a Godfather reference to summarize how we got here, Dubas was Fredo making power moves to climb the family ladder to Shanahan's Michael. Never go against the family and you know the rest.

Is Cassidy a future legend though ?

that was such a dumb take in his own hubris

So 7 mil a year for a decade to do what, get a Milk and TikTok ad polluting the jerseys? Seems like all the hockey personnel doing the actual work on the team were put in place by and are closer to Dubas than Shanny.

Would you describe the current state of the organization as “well run”? If someone is responsible for the stability of an organization, having no leadership and a chaotic environment 6 weeks before the biggest offseason of the last 20 years seems like an abject failure and grounds for dismissal. Seems like MLSE’s newfound reluctance to spend more money on staff is the only thing keeping him employed until his very generous contract runs out.

Yep. The entire offseason plan - which was to double down on Dubas - went up in smoke in a few hours lol.

Shanny couldn't have been bothered to get a better read on Dubas weeks/months ago I guess.
I truly believe dubas believed like some regular joes that if the leafs got through the first round the dam would break and they would go on a run

Everythimg snapped in him after florida beat them... 3 months earlier i would bet my house dubas would have said keep waiting until end of season to evaluate me and do contract

Yes he blocked dubas from making 15 trades at the deadline according to media leaks coming from Dubas

I'm sure he begged him to pick up Matt Murray as well

Just because it was leaked, does not mean it is not true (nor does it mean it is true).

But this is just what is being reported, so I'd be curious to have more insight.

Shanahan clearly thought enough of the signings and the Murray trade to allow it if he is the final say on the GM's moves (as is being reported currently).

I'd like to hear Dubas' side of events on all this and Shanny's.

Because we're the Leafs, you know this ends with Dubas and Spezza going to Ottawa and winning a Cup
In the past I might have had this view BUT...

The way things have unfolded I really BeLeaf that there is a cosmic hand at play here. Things are about to get really good for the Leafs. It may not be immediate but we are winning the cup in the next 10-12 years.

If we don't rebuild/scorched earth route then it maybe within the next 3 to 5 years

I think hockey gods are finally taking mercy on the Leafs Nation

Dubas WAS Shannys choice of who should be GM of the Leafs this offseason. Up until just recently Shanny was 100% okay with everything Dubas' had done so far

Shanahan had no complaints about Dubas' hockey decisions, the press conference made that clear. He only had issues with his indecisiveness about committing to the Leafs and contract demands.

Ok and? He owes Shanahan complete fealty forever then? Doesn’t change the fact that no GM wants someone micromanaging their every move.

If Shanahan had made Dubas' life so difficult why did Dubas stick around like a jaded cop looking to do the time so he can get his pension benefits?

Why was dubas proclaming in teh presser that he will only want to work as gm with teh leafs and nowhere else?

Why did dubas wait till his contract negotiations were up to task to do it?

Dubas' track record shows that he has completely dropped the ball. While you don't acknowledge that dubas has failed the leafs you just want to blame shanny?

Dubas left the Leafs with probably the cleanest slate a GM could walk into. Obviously there are changes that need to be made but generally speaking, there are no dead weight or awful contracts that need addressed. The next GM will have roughly 15-20M of cap space after Muzzin goes on LTIR and pawning off Murray.

Mirtle gave an early look at what the roster could look at entering July 1st after Acciari and Schenn are extended (this was before Dubas was let go).

Yes until Dubas backdoored him in negotiations

He's not getting praised because we've done so well on the ice, it's because he didn't bend over to the ridiculous demands

Shanny didn't like how Dubas' handled his own contract negotiations.

He also seemingly was just fine with the decisions made impacting the team, it's makeup, and it's player contracts ect.

I mean sure but we have an 11 mil boat anchor 3 key contract decisions and 18 mil to fill 5 FW sports, and a goalie that includes at least one top 6 winger. Money goes quick. We probably need to revamp the D as well. Also have very few picks this year and down a 1 in 2025

Yes I agree with you

I didn't say there was an unlimited amount of cap space... but there are no Marleau level contracts to deal with. There are no 5+ year overpaid players like Huberdeau anchoring the cap. Murray is tradeable but will take a bit of work to get done. They can create even more cap space if and when they decide to trade a top player as everyone expects.

The D does not need to be revamped.
