I can't really see that. You'd think sports franchises would've lost value in this economy. But they've continued to explode in value. There's still mega profit to be had holding onto the team for several years.

I'd prefer Sullivan be fired about 5 years ago, and don't want him influencing the potential top 5 pick the team's gonna have in June. But yeah, losing is the goal now. Particularly for the 2026 and 2027 drafts.

Just hope he's gone and not coaching any potential building block prospects. I think it'd genuinely kill my desire to watch entirely if he tried to turn McKenna into Bryan Rust.

The same can be accomplished with Quinn as interim coach and then fired at the end of the season too.

I had the same thought when I saw this is NYR's pick. I actually love the upside on this pick because even if it goes to 2026 it could still be a really nice pick.

He's by far the most reliable d-man the Pens have iced this entire decade. That we didn't want to re-sign him doesn't mean he's bad (he truly is solid as f***). Logs big minutes, PKs, handles tough assignments, reads the play well, can pass, makes quick decisions, I mean the dude is a beast. On the exterior he doesn't look like a physical player, and he doesn't look it because of his lanky frame, but he racks up a lot of hits. Mostly because he just reads the play really well. By that I mean - he knows when to throw the body, but it's never Trouba style where he's going for a big hit in favor of positioning and sound D (his bread and butter). I will miss him, but given where our org is at, trading him was a no brainer.

Yea. Main point being that the Heinen for DOC swap just makes more sense. DOC simply does not fit this roster any more and I think Heinen will succeed more in his role.

You could make an argument that we would have been better off with a signed Pettersson than with Heinen's and Desharnais' contracts. The difference would have been minimal.

They HAVE to hit on their next three first-round picks (2 in '25, 1 in '26).

But yeah, Pettersson will be missed. And if we turn around and re-sign Grz I will lose it.

IMO the Rags continue playing .500%. Hockey and this pick falls between 10-16. Let’s say it lands at 12. I assume the Rags then can choose to keep or give to us. Kind of like the Karlsson/San Jose dilemma we were possibly going to have to make last year. If that is the case the Rags if I were them would give the 12th pick to us. Again, if not you roll the dice on 26 pick which everything I have read it is a better and deeper draft.

As others have said, it's not that he's not a good player, it's that we didn't want to re-sign him because of where we are in our contention window. Also, we believed that (of all our UFAs) he would return the best value in a trade - and it looks like the return has even exceeded most of our expectations. Further, the reason we knew he would return the best value in a trade is because he's a good player.

A solid stay at home defensemen who plays responsibly in his own end. Scores occasionally, but has excellent defensive instincts. His age & likely salary expectations just don’t work in Pittsburgh.

Why do you think they fired Hextall & hired Dubas? FSG isn’t selling the team a few years after spending nearly a $1 billion to buy it. That’s not a loss any business is willing to take & would be stupid anyway.

I have to wonder if the Rangers knew that their pick would be flipped to us. Vancouver was obviously plotting the Pettersson deal in tandem with the Miller trade, but I wonder if the Rangers knew behind the scenes that this was going to happen. I can't imagine that the Rangers are super thrilled at the thought that we own their first-rounder in either this or next year.

I dunno about excellent but it feels like he and the team have definitely committed to packing it in as opposed to being in that no man's land between trying to compete and trying to tear down/rebuild. That's a good thing.

It'll be really interesting to see what he does with the rest of the tradeable players between now and next TDL. IMO Rakell, Bunting, EK and Rust all have to be gone by the end of next season.

Well, the standings and the roster suggest we are still in no man's land. We are a few losses in a row from getting close to a bottom-five pick, and a couple of wins away from being within striking distance of a wild card slot. And there are no openings for our youth to crack the roster, and we still have a curmudgeon behind the bench who wants nothing to do with youth...and our GM continues to placate and enable Sullivan.

And for the record, I will be stunned if they trade Rust (and even then, it will only happen after July 1, 2025). And I would not trade Karlsson unless you can get a first-round pick without any retention at all. Or a young stud prospect or young NHLer.

Well, the way our team is constructed, the only pairing that makes sense at the moment is Graves-Desharnais. Which got me thinking:

- what if Dubas inquired about a Morgan Rielly-for-Ryan Graves trade with the Leafs? Both have three years left on their deals. The savings for the Leafs would be $3 million for each season. Rielly has a full NMC so he ultimately decides if this is even possible, but we could pair another player or two with Graves and not ask for anything else in return. Now, the downside to this idea is that if the Leafs freed up that much cap space, they likely would be more able to re-sign Marner. However, if they continue to insist that Marner make less than Matthews, all bets are still off.

Anyway, Graves and Grz or Acciari or Lizotte for Rielly would be close to even money, and the Leafs would still be saving on the cap.

Then if you acquire Rielly, you probably are more interested in dealing Karlsson if you are Dubas. I don't know, I think it is interesting. He seems interested in acquiring other team's unwanted cap hits. In this case, instead of acquiring futures for it we would be shedding one of our bad contracts in the process. And obviously, we upgrade massively on the back end.

Plus they save money on not having to hire BOTH a president of hockey operations and a GM. And they don't have to pay more than one head coach's salary from now until eternity, so more savings there.

i think that's the best thing. it gives us 2 picks in the first round in a much deeper draft. and it might be easier to move up that 2nd pick too.

I’m not as patient. I can’t delay gratification or whatever. I wanna get this rebuild going, especially with not having a 1st this past draft. Get a Martone, Desnoyers or Hagens that could possibly step in right away, then a solid longer-term prospect that can battle for a spot in another year or two.

I think with the Rangers pick you probably just hope it's 14th this year and leave it at that.

It's hypothetically nice to imagine getting their unprotected first next year but with the cap going up and that being the scenario I'm sure the Rangers would do everything possible to not suck next year. An unprotected first in 2026 is only good if it ends up being a high pick again and I'm sure the Rangers would do everything in their power to make sure it's not.

Also getting the pick now expedites the rebuild a little bit more as well.
