Lol look at Chychrun's injury history and tell me if you think he is a lock to survive an entire playoff run. A top 6 forward, two physical top 9 forwards, 1 top 4 defenseman and a really good depth defenseman is much better than one piece. The playoffs are going to be a bloodbath you need depth, especially on defense.
I think you're drastically overselling the guys we got and underselling Chychrun. Each time we've been eliminated we were missing one clutch goal to get us over the hump. Chychrun can do that (so can ROR). Lafferty/Acciari/Schenn/McCabe hitting people isn't going to win us any games.

Not to be too argumentative here but he's on pace for 15 goals this season over 82 games and has only 1 goal in 9 career playoff game.

Hes a good player but I don't think anyone can make a claim of him being clutch. He's got a lot to prove still

Fair enough. I just think considering all the high picks we traded we could've landed a bigger fish. Also don't like that he went to Ottawa.

Maybe we better hold off on the Dubas appreciation thread. Anyone watching the Leafs Edmonton game will understand why………it’s embarrassing

We can't draw too much of an equivalency between what the Leafs paid out and what Ottawa paid out for Chychrun. Arizona is betting on Ottawa being bad and receiving a high pick (top 5 protected) and are building compensation based on future Ottawa performances.

The picks the Leafs have sent out *should be lower, are hail mary passes for Chicago and top 10 protected.

"They moved a pick specifically to keep Kerfoot in the lineup" ...Friedman

It was embarrassing for you. I wasn't embarrassed.
That game was on the core four and the coach. Holl and Mo can't be a thing and SK is forcing it. Also we should look at this as positive that it's going to take hard work and other teams aren't just going to rollover for us.

Still, it was one game. Nothing to get embarrassed about unless you are one of the players or the coach.

This thread is going to age poorly. It truly is amazing to me how gullible this fanbase is. Dubas is doing MOSTLY the same thing at this trade deadline as he's always done since he became GM - bringing in depth pieces. Yes, ROR and McCabe are more than that, and at least he's getting some term on some of the other guys, but ultimately, the two primary problems with the team have yet again been neglected.

First, the goaltending is highly questionable. Anyone thinking Samsonov has what it takes to win a Stanley Cup is out to lunch. On top of that, their backup is made of glass and hasn't played in what, months? And even when he does play, he's not great anyway.

Secondly and most importantly, an issue that I've been ranting about for years - the core of this team is rotten. The core guys on this team have ALWAY wilted under the pressure of bright lights and big games. Individually, they are extremely talented players, but as a group, they are soft and purposeless, to quote their own coach. This has always been the case and will always be the case as long as this core remains intact. How many years has management been talking about "killer instinct"? Has the play of the Leafs this year, particularly their record against dumpster fire teams, done anything to prove that they've magically acquired killer instinct? Matthews' comment after the trades puts it all in perspective:

Forget the trades and all the babysitters that have been brought in to help this core "get over the hump" (Simmonds, Thornton, Marleau, Foligno, etc.). The GM shouldn't have to bring in guys like that in order for players like Matthews to recognize the importance of a "two-way street". The two-way street was paved when the GM paid those divas 11+ million dollars per year when they'd accomplished f*** all - which is another major problem. Every time Dubas rewards these guys, they flip him off, as was shown last night in Edmonton.

The problem is the core, but Dubas is too blind do see it. He needs to wake up, but unfortunately that horse left the barn years ago. It should have costed him his job already, but knowing this organization, this team will go out in R1G7, and he'll be extended soon after. Shanahan is a carnival barker and the Leafs organization as a whole is a circus. And the fans of this team are blind acolytes.

Stopped reading at the bolded. Adding ROR and McCabe isn't even close to doing "mostly the same thing". Cheers.

Looks like Bertuzzi could have been had as well for a very reasonable package.

Ekholm, Bertuzzi, Kane, Chychrun, Orlov all went for pennies on the dollar and Dubas paid a premium for.... not very much. Team would look much better with any of those guys.

Icing on the cake will be when Parayko goes for less than McCabe smh

If/when this team falters yet again this post-season Dubas will hopefully take the next step in his evolution as a GM and recognize that simply renting toughness/character/compete, etc. at the deadline isn't enough, the core has to have it in their DNA.

So while I overall greatly approve of the moves so far at this deadline (with the caveat above), and glad at least a few of them will be around next year and beyond, until the core is comprised of "those" guys I'm not optimistic.

And once again, I sincerely, desperately hope this team proves me wrong this spring and I eat a lot of crow. Would be the best crow I've ever tasted.

How many thousands of times does this have to be said......Bertuzzi cannot cross the border into the US if he is traded to a Canadian team as he will lose his US non-resident work visa.

Bertuzzi is NOT A POSSIBILITY! Stop!!! They just paid a 1st and 4th for a guy who has 4 G in 29 games.

The Leafs did better in their deals than any of those. Only a blind fool couldn't see this.

Is that actually still a rule? I thought for sure that was over and done with.

But the Leafs def did worse on their trades than the other players mentioned. Paid more for less easily.

You'd think the Insiders would have been aware of that?

If mathews doesn't dominate any series the leafs are done
These players had a run of 4 years of a GM that has spoon fed them and did everything for this group but wipe their asses
I'll give him credit for loyalty but I think MAYBE dubas should start thinking of his future

These guys don't give a fiddlers f.... about him

Dubas added depth to the roster but not much in terms of quality.
IMO the gaping hole in the lineup is another top pairing D man to play with Rielly. Holl is a dumpster fire.

The issue isn't another D man to play with Rielly, the issue is playing Rielly so much.

How much money did Ari eat on in that Sens trade? How much did they take back in contracts? Bos,LA,Oil were all in on him and Ari wouldn't take/retain and those teams moved on. The Leafs have done fine with the trades they have made and can't be judged until the season is done.
One one cup! Imagine what Boston will look if these players walk and PB/DK retire and their goalie comes back to his career levels?
