This thread is going to age poorly. It truly is amazing to me how gullible this fanbase is
. Dubas is doing MOSTLY the same thing at this trade deadline as he's always done since he became GM - bringing in depth pieces. Yes, ROR and McCabe are more than that, and at least he's getting some term on some of the other guys, but ultimately, the two primary problems with the team have yet again been neglected.
First, the goaltending is highly questionable. Anyone thinking Samsonov has what it takes to win a Stanley Cup is out to lunch. On top of that, their backup is made of glass and hasn't played in what, months? And even when he does play, he's not great anyway.
Secondly and most importantly, an issue that I've been ranting about for years - the core of this team is rotten. The core guys on this team have ALWAY wilted under the pressure of bright lights and big games. Individually, they are extremely talented players, but as a group, they are soft and purposeless, to quote their own coach. This has always been the case and will always be the case as long as this core remains intact. How many years has management been talking about "killer instinct"? Has the play of the Leafs this year, particularly their record against dumpster fire teams, done anything to prove that they've magically acquired killer instinct? Matthews' comment after the trades puts it all in perspective:

Forget the trades and all the babysitters that have been brought in to help this core "get over the hump" (Simmonds, Thornton, Marleau, Foligno, etc.). The GM shouldn't have to bring in guys like that in order for players like Matthews to recognize the importance of a "two-way street". The two-way street was paved when the GM paid those divas 11+ million dollars per year when they'd accomplished f*** all - which is another major problem. Every time Dubas rewards these guys, they flip him off, as was shown last night in Edmonton.
The problem is the core, but Dubas is too blind do see it. He needs to wake up, but unfortunately that horse left the barn years ago. It should have costed him his job already, but knowing this organization, this team will go out in R1G7, and he'll be extended soon after. Shanahan is a carnival barker and the Leafs organization as a whole is a circus. And the fans of this team are blind acolytes.
