He's made so many deals lately it's made everyone hungry for more. The fans are always on EA Sports NHL GM mode and it feels like Dubas has been too. But it's been so many I feel like if he's indeed truly done (though he may do something small since there are 9 D), I see people turning on him by Friday.

I think he's done more than enough at this point, but so many seem fixated on overhauling the team and this "all in" concept, that if certain pieces are still here, I think you'll see the tide start to turn back. That's how it is with this fanbase.

Generally agree. I’d probably call the Sandin deal a B personally. I’d rather have kept him in the long term, but he wasn’t going to play, and we turned a bottom pair D (with upside) into a 1st & a veteran defenseman having a significantly better season than him, who I’d imagine we may flip.
He probably wasn’t going to take not playing well, so I get it, but the return for me wasn’t enough….isn’t a finished product and we might regret the premature verdict on a young D.

Hope we get a Blueprint episode of Dubas making all these deals

Starts off him snorting few stuff. Remember that movie with Michael Douglas where he just snaps and goes on beating the crap out of people. Falling Down

I don't think I have ever seen a Leafs GM just go on crazy mode. I expected these types of ferray from let's say Burke or Quinn. Even Fletcher had a habit of going a bit off script.

But this is the team we been wanting. A team that has a bit swagger, bit substance and lot of pushback if neccessary

I get this new feeling about this team that I haven't had in 20 years.

Does anyone really think adding Schenn and Gustafsson is going to move the needle? Schenn hasn’t played a full season since he last played for us, and Gustafsson hasn’t played a full season in half a decade. Schenn isn’t going to be stapled to an elite OFD anymore. Just seems like a reach that either one of these guys is going to help much in the playoffs. The only move I really like from Dubas was the ROR acquisition.

Guess we all have to wait and see if leveraging the future of the franchise was worth it. I’m going to bank on “No”. We’ve added fringe players in the past, it never seems to work out.

How the heck can any rational human look at the trades yesterday and say those moves were leveraging the future of the franchise??

Out:
Engvall (UFA)
Sandin (blocked at LD for the rest of his contract)

In:
Gustafsson
Schenn

We might indeed. I'm not thrilled with losing Sandin but on the other hand, if he was unhappy before, it's hard to see him no being even more unhappy going forward as it appears he would have to wait for quite a while before getting a true opportunity to play here after we picked up McCabe.

We might regret it, but then again we might not so while again I'm not thrilled, I get the logic behind the move.

Loved that movie, and I'm also getting that feeling about this team. A lot of changes so we've yet to see how they all fit together but yeah, I haven't been this excited before the playoffs start in all my 50+ years watching this team. This could be the year! :)

I don't expect these latest two guys to move the needle. I expect Schenn to be useful in spot duty and Gustafsson, I really have no idea. But I do like what Acciari and Lafferty bring and you are aware we also picked up ROR and McCabe right?

It's not about moving the needle, it's about grabbing the right depth.

Ideally, neither Schenn nor Gus plays in the playoffs for the Leafs but having them in the pressbox is way better than having Timmins and Sandin as your go to guys in case of injury.

If Rielly gets injured and we need a PP QB, we have a great shot and pass guy in Gus who is having a great year.

If Holl plays like an idiot in the playoffs or we're lacking physicality, we can insert Schenn as a 7D instead of having to put Timmins in.

This is all about making sure you have a good back up plan in case of injury.

Exactly haha. Dubas trades picks...he's leveraging the future. Dubas acquires pick and he's still leveraging the future.

Make it make sense.

My grades:

O‘Neil/Acciari A+
McCabe/Lafferty A
Schenn B
Engvall B
Sandin C-

A, changing the culture and prepping us for the playoffs.
I think Sandin was probably his best move and I'm fully aware of the limitations of Gustafsson.

If there are two guys we have/had that you don't really want playing playoff games it is/was Sandin and Holl.

Fine for the regular season though.

Ya I’m not sure about all this mortgaging the future and the cupboards are bare talk.
Our prospect pool isn’t great, hasn’t been for a while. but despite all the picks traded we have come out retaining the one that is top of the list. Knies has both upside and is close to challenging for a spot. Robertson is in that same boat it’s a real shame he got injured.
We have core pieces in place, we have good depth, we don’t need half a roster full of blue chippers knocking on the door. No team in the leafs position would.

After Knies and Robertson, it’s a mix of interesting but so far away, possible good role player/depth pieces and some Euro’s playing pro that will eventually come over to NA, but probably not soon. Overall, not great

Dubas sent a lot of picks out the door recently, but all the prospects we do have came from picks like the ones he traded out.

We kept our two highest impact and closest prospects to help in our window. The argument of bare cupboards and mortgaging the future comes down to the difference of a few more darts at the wall, in the same range as what we currently have, that may or may not be something 4/5 seasons down the road.
Either you can recognize we still have Knies and Robertson, and a lot of what-ifs, or you are lamenting about a couple more what-ifs we could have drafted in the next couple seasons and not have a clear picture on for almost a decade. At the expense of a vastly improved roster this season.

I was just looking at the overall amount of picks out vs in over the last three seasons, as well as moving on from Sandin (thought he had decent potential).

I’m also a bucket of beers in at a resort in St. Lucia, so I may be completely off base.

I don't really know who Gustafsson is but I know Schenn leads the league in hits.

I think we could use that in some capacity. Was taking a regular shift for Tampa winning the cup (correct me if I'm wrong there I'm note exactly sure his role there).

Just listened to some clips here and there on Tim and Friends. Kyper was saying Kyle should have done this last season. Reality is that ROR was not available.
To me, ROR is the big piece, McCabe is huge too but we did had Muz last season and if he is not injured this year and played good, there is no need for McCabe. I love how Acciari been playing, like what I saw in Lafferty and Schenn but ROR is the piece that changed everything for the Leafs.
If ROR is not a Leafs, all the other deals moved are just depth moves. ROR is someone who at any given series bc the shutdown C that turned the tide for the team. Just remembered what turtleneck did for us in 2-3 games against Bruins, now imagine that on steroids and last the whole series.

Hahahahaha!! So true.

"Fix the team!!"
gets grit
"He's ruining the chemistry!!"

People here would probably be upset if they got rid of the entire third line, traded for Crosby and then put two plugs on his line.

"Yeah Crosby is good but we just traded Kerfoot, Engvall and Jarnkrok...I don't know if it's worth it to ruin the chemistry."

Not that I’m saying I agree, but changing a third of the roster at the trade deadline is a big overhaul in a short period of time. Dubas has finally figured it out and got what this team has needed for years. Here’s hoping it pay offs, and I think it will
