So you think adding more to the story was useful? More so than just saying no comment and only taking questions on hockey?
I get it. Fans want to know the tea, but it does little to help an athlete whose trying to focus on his job and now has to comment again after more information is leaked by his bosses.
If I was involved in something like this I would hope those closest to me wouldn’t give the media any quotes. That’s just me.
Re; not telling the organization. It’s tough to say. He wasn’t arrested and probably forgot about it until he received a summons in the mail. At that point he might have believed it was only a minor offence where he’d pay and fine and be done. Hindsight is 20/20 in these situations.
Either way, until we have actual facts it’s only fair to withhold judgment. Let the process play out and don’t comment.
That’s the right thing to do.
if I was involved in something like this. (which I wouldn't be, because A: I don't drink, and then B: i wouldn't go harassing people becuse of it, OR (if Matthews didn't do it, hang out with people who did, and then C: when
caught and asked for an apology I'd have the maturity to say "you know what, i am truly sorry, and D: if I
didn't I'd have the intelligence to tell my employers so
they wouldn't be caught with
their pants down). But that's just me.
I don't care about knowing/not knowing (about this). but what is frustrating me is how so many people are all "Poor Matthews."and getting mad at everyone else, but the person who is involved in this whole drama.
in order of just making this simple - i'm just going to assume that he did it to make my point - but will also say in fairness we don't know if he did or did not, yah? okay.
All of this could have been avoided that Matthews told the club. Legal stuff happens with NHL clubs all the time.
dumb stuff too. (ie: Claude Giroux, butt slapping a cop and being tossed in jail - to start). A bit more serious stuff (ie: Patrick Kane vs. Cabbie in Buffalo). But they tell their club teams, so they are prepared. This is 2019. the fact that people thought that
no one would find this out blows my mind. and had the Matthews camp
told the Leafs camp they could be properly prepared and stopped the information.
because of that lack of disclosure, the club was caught unawares.
now. this is just me (again) I think people baby athletes way too damned much. I'm not "pro"(or "anti") media. but everyone has their job to do, and I am not going to be mad at the media for asking the questions that they need to ask to tell their story. (within reason). Telling the truth of "we're disappointed in the actions, but we know he can learn from this, i wish we didn't find out this way, but let's move on" - is the
truth. and In my opinion stops anything from going further. We didn't know, we're bummed out, but we know
he can grow from this, we're moving on- isn't fanning anything. Lying, or avoiding does nothing but leaves you open to more questions if the truth (and it does) comes out later.
but instead of focusing on the person who did so many things wrong in this situation, people are getting mad at Dubas for not babying him. (which is so ironic because people then get mad that he babies the team too much and wants to be their best friend). so no matter what, people would get mad at Dubas.
I'm not the guy's biggest fan. I really am not - but i am not going to sit here and throw stones at the guy and blame him for things that most other GMs would do in the exact same situation. be honest and say "they didn't know and they were disappointed that they didn't." and i feel a lot of this "BOO DUBAS." reaction is coming
because it's Matthews. If this was Garret Sparks or something, i would feel very confident that most people wouldn't have had an issue with what Dubas/Babcock said.
I'd be frustrated at the person who didn't give the team ample warning to prepare so THEY can do their jobs properly and keep the focus on hockey - not Dubas.
