Yeah, those TMZ type reporters love to speculate.. But without facts, who cares if a bunch of reporters who lack integrity choose to speculate?

Almost every question can be answered with “no comment on ongoing legal matters” and nothing more.

Which leads to more speculation, which leads to more questions, which leads to a longer distraction.

This story is already running out of legs. There's nothing left to talk about. If he had stonewalled it would still be playing out, they'd still be digging and filling in the gaps themselves.

So you think adding more to the story was useful? More so than just saying no comment and only taking questions on hockey?

I get it. Fans want to know the tea, but it does little to help an athlete whose trying to focus on his job and now has to comment again after more information is leaked by his bosses.

If I was involved in something like this I would hope those closest to me wouldn’t give the media any quotes. That’s just me.

Re; not telling the organization. It’s tough to say. He wasn’t arrested and probably forgot about it until he received a summons in the mail. At that point he might have believed it was only a minor offence where he’d pay and fine and be done. Hindsight is 20/20 in these situations.

Either way, until we have actual facts it’s only fair to withhold judgment. Let the process play out and don’t comment.

That’s the right thing to do.

if I was involved in something like this. (which I wouldn't be, because A: I don't drink, and then B: i wouldn't go harassing people becuse of it, OR (if Matthews didn't do it, hang out with people who did, and then C: when caught and asked for an apology I'd have the maturity to say "you know what, i am truly sorry, and D: if I didn't I'd have the intelligence to tell my employers so they wouldn't be caught with their pants down). But that's just me.

I don't care about knowing/not knowing (about this). but what is frustrating me is how so many people are all "Poor Matthews."and getting mad at everyone else, but the person who is involved in this whole drama.

in order of just making this simple - i'm just going to assume that he did it to make my point - but will also say in fairness we don't know if he did or did not, yah? okay.

All of this could have been avoided that Matthews told the club. Legal stuff happens with NHL clubs all the time. dumb stuff too. (ie: Claude Giroux, butt slapping a cop and being tossed in jail - to start). A bit more serious stuff (ie: Patrick Kane vs. Cabbie in Buffalo). But they tell their club teams, so they are prepared. This is 2019. the fact that people thought that no one would find this out blows my mind. and had the Matthews camp told the Leafs camp they could be properly prepared and stopped the information.

because of that lack of disclosure, the club was caught unawares.

now. this is just me (again) I think people baby athletes way too damned much. I'm not "pro"(or "anti") media. but everyone has their job to do, and I am not going to be mad at the media for asking the questions that they need to ask to tell their story. (within reason). Telling the truth of "we're disappointed in the actions, but we know he can learn from this, i wish we didn't find out this way, but let's move on" - is the truth. and In my opinion stops anything from going further. We didn't know, we're bummed out, but we know he can grow from this, we're moving on- isn't fanning anything. Lying, or avoiding does nothing but leaves you open to more questions if the truth (and it does) comes out later.

but instead of focusing on the person who did so many things wrong in this situation, people are getting mad at Dubas for not babying him. (which is so ironic because people then get mad that he babies the team too much and wants to be their best friend). so no matter what, people would get mad at Dubas.

I'm not the guy's biggest fan. I really am not - but i am not going to sit here and throw stones at the guy and blame him for things that most other GMs would do in the exact same situation. be honest and say "they didn't know and they were disappointed that they didn't." and i feel a lot of this "BOO DUBAS." reaction is coming because it's Matthews. If this was Garret Sparks or something, i would feel very confident that most people wouldn't have had an issue with what Dubas/Babcock said.

I'd be frustrated at the person who didn't give the team ample warning to prepare so THEY can do their jobs properly and keep the focus on hockey - not Dubas.

I don’t have time to address most of this but I respectfully disagree. You’ve made a lot of incorrect assumptions including that he couldn’t be completely innocent and still be caught up in this. I’m not suggesting he’s innocent, but we don’t know a single law he’s actually broken. You may be a saint who never does wrong, but even you’re capable of finding yourself in a bad situation.

I’m not trying to defend Matthews or rid him of blame if he’s guilty. I’m just saying that it sounds like a 22 year old kid whose not really a trouble maker had a playful prank get way out of hand. He wasn’t arrested and didn’t take a letter in the mail as seriously as he should have. Having never been involved, didn’t realize it was still a process and he couldn’t just quietly pay a fine.

The last part I take issue with because I’ve been consistent on this matter as long as I’ve been posting here. You can refer to some of the conversation on young Nazem Kadri or James Reimer - two other individuals who were routinely thrown under the bus by the team. Whether this was Matthews or Jeremy Bracco, my opinion wouldn’t change. Feel free to look into it.

Talking to the media is never good. No comment, no comment, cliche answer, no comment.

I disagree. You may have a few reporters looking for tabloid material but they’ll always be there.

I think if he played it right, he could actually get them talking about hockey. Man, this team is going to be exciting to watch this year.... unfortunately, nobody in the media wants to hear anything about that. It’s just not negative so it’s not newsworthy.

Weird world we live in.

The entire situation is disappointing, there is no defending Matthews behaviour. It was dumb and he demonstrated a total lack of maturity for the Caption of the Leafs. But could still see this happen. People learn. But, I think his Father or someone close to him could have caused all the problems after the fact. If Matthews just told the the Leafs they would have told him to apologize or whatever the agreement would be, she'd sign a non disclosure that would be all. But in her words it was his Father who kept on pushing the situation in the direction that it went.

I'm super excited! Sounds like our defense could have come together quite well and on top there looks to be depth at most positions.

i didn't say I was a saint and never did anything wrong. but what I'm saying when I have been in bad situations, i wouldn't actually compound the bad situation to making it worse.

I flat out said, let's assume that he did.. All we know is that he was with those people. He wasn't arrested but the minute charges were put out on him, is the moment he calls the leafs and says "this is what's up. so even if he did nothing wrong up until that point the moment he didn't tell the Leafs he was in legal trouble is the moment he was wrong.

and i never said that you would -i said Most people would. I'm someone who tries to be consistent to, so if you felt like i was calling you out there, then I apologise. I don't think Reimer was thrown under the bus (to be frank with you ) and I don't think Kadri (in this new regime) was either. but if you do that's your opinion, though i don't agree.

So am I.

They might have found something in Rielly-Ceci. Sandin has been a lot of fun to watch. Marty Marincin looks like a different player and now looks to have earned a job over some seemingly decent #6 options. Nylander and Matthews are reunited. Sandin-Dermott might actually make the 3rd pair a strength rather than the weakness I expected. There’s a lot to be excited about.

Without excusing Matthews for what he did or didn’t do, there’s a lot more interesting and exciting things to talk about than tabloid drama... It seems silly when sportscentre leads off with 5 minutes on this story instead of NHL training camps, NFL, MLB playoffs upcoming and NBA camps etc.

This is one of the best times of year as a sports fan and their prime time intro is a snippet of Kyle Dubas commenting on this **** It’s so ridiculous.

I love the unbridled enthusiasm there Billy Mumphrey. I'm very excited to watch this team as well

But how do we know he did anything to make it worse? Is it possible this security guard has either misinterpreted or even misrepresented the situation? Maybe she dozed off and he knocked on the window to wake her up rather than report her? Words were exchanged and rather than risk being reported for negligence at her job she went on the offensive? I mean, I’m not sure why a lone female with PTSD who admitted she felt vulnerable is working a grave yard security shift to begin with... but is it possible she blew this situation way out of proportion?

Again, maybe he’s never been in the situation before and thought he just had to pay a fine? Wrong of him not to look into it, for sure.. but again, we just don’t know.

I think prior to the Shanahan - Lamoriello era the organization didn’t do a very good job protecting players from the brighter spotlight. I felt like those two did an excellent job recognizing how important it was to play things close to the vest but it really seems like the organization has gotten away from that over the past 15 months.

I thinks it’s a bad move and I don’t like it. Fans are over the top and the media is a business looking to sell stories not tell your truth. There’s no reason to tell them anything and it’s even worse now because social media carries the news faster and farther.

Media is a distraction. Smart organizations don’t feed them.

I think it's important to note also both partys had meet and made exchanges in the day twice as well as he introduced himself. So one party probably felt more familiar with the other party at this point. They also wouldnt think of themselves as criminals when they try and joke on a citizen whome now would be the 3rd time in 16 hours they had crossed paths. They then wouldn't have thought she would have gotten as upset as she did. Then when she confronts them their probably like you know us this is the third time seeing us in less then 3 hours. Get over it and get bent yes here's my arse and I'll keep it pg13 for you as I shuffle away not aggressively go at you. They don't look at themselves as criminals so they wouldn't have felt like they were doing anything criminal. As for not telling daddy and Mommy and or the team well if he's a 22 year old man his business is his and who he did or didn't tell again is there problem with him not us. None of this is our problem but our UN country's like to say we are the best yet I hear alot of Racist talk still. Ramped drug use homeless aloud to smoke and drink in public places others with a job get fined for. There are huge issues here in this world. This is minus 100 as being ground breaking look in the mirror most people just living there lives out arnt changing the world for the better.

Opps I really ment though I had cut out the last half as a rant I type some stuff then re read it and trim etc. Must have gotten distracted as looking back I really was going to cut it off at not telling his mom and dad my bad on that one. The rest is unnecessary for these boards.

Asking for a source is odd to you? Ok then. I prefer vetting things.

Should be easy to pull up then. I can't find it

i just find it really interesting that people go "i don't trust media at all." then want a source. (ie: something the media wrote of the person saying it) . if it wasn't true. then the Leafs PR (or Babcock himself would have said what Kristen said wasn't true. which they've done plenty of times with regards to other twitter quotes and what not) - which is why for the most part the ones who work and travel with the leafs every day generally don't make crap up when saying "Person of the team said." (ie: Kristen, Mark etc) because if they did they'd be seen as people who lie, and can't be trusted and lose their gigs being around the team. (see Dave Feschuck who doesn't have access to the team as easily as he did before).
