Dubas and co. need to sit down and evaluate where they went wrong with in their negotiations with some of our guys. Cause this is BRUTAL.

This is pretty much what I figured.

1.) Nylander was fair value. But too long.
2.)Matthews was fair value but it makes more sense to have him and tavares to expire at the same time.
3.) marner is about 1’million overpaid. Looks like it’s more like 1.25.

Comparable (or better) players have now signed better contracts then Marner. Everyone said, they'll wait for Marner to set the bar and then sign after. Guess what? That happened.

People might say "oh it's only 1.6M more per year more then Rantanen, you won't notice it" - BS. We can see this season even that we can't even roll a 23 man roster because of how tight things are. The playbook is out on Dubas, he sucks at negotiations.

Well, safe to say, we got f***ed on the Marner contract. Marner camp wanted every last penny and we completely gave in. The really annoying part of it is how we gave such big signing bonuses. That should at least let us save a bit on the AAV. Completely expecting Rantanen not to get anywhere near the sky high signing bonuses.

With that said, it was expected to be honest, so not too annoyed. Overpaying elite young players isn't the end of the world.

Edit: No signing bonuses for Rantanen.:help:

Rantanen is significanty better than Nylander, and is only getting 2.25M more. All three are overpaid.

Marner is not worth 2+ million less than Matthews. Heck, he's not worth 1 million less than Matthews IMO. Both are about equally overpaid. Same with Nylander.

Wow, I am shocked.

How did Dubas screwed up Marner's contract? It was the last one of the big three and he claimed he learned from all his past negotiation mistakes. I bet 30 other gm would have done better on these signings.

we got bent over on the Marner deal, it's not up for debate given his league wide comps

better to overpay your stars than other players I guess....

He blinked first.

In retrospect should have used the fact that 1) Marner had already rejected offersheets and 2) the threat that they couldn't technically sign Marner to a big money contract beyond the season opener to force him to either sign what the Leafs wanted or risk being moved off the team.

Dubas didn't want to go through what happened with Nylander (ie the player missing camp and becoming a huge distraction) which was understandable in a way, but it meant giving into Marners very unreasonable contract demands.

Not just Marner, but Matthews and Nylander too.

agree with Matthews being a bad deal, although Nylander I can see as being a fine deal as long as he bounces back

Dubas f***** this up though, don't know how people can defend it

Not really. We can list direct contract comparables that show Matthew's and Nylander getting within a few hundred thousand follars of what they eventually got.

There are zero rfa wingers in league history that have signed what Marner ended up getting.

Edit:not to kickstart this tired debate again. Nobdy will say anything new here - i was just getting at that Marners deal is by far the most unique in terms of any other contract out in the league.

Pretty frustrating seeing all these other teams get better deals for comparable, if not better players. Now we've got three huge questionable deals that's going to make it that much harder to build the rest of the team.

Even if he bounces back, 7 mil for a 20 goal, 60 point complimentary winger is pretty bad, when you consider that 44G Laine and 40G 90P Point got less AAV....

I'm sorry, but this is BS.

Matthews is a great comparable for Marner. Marner had more points than Matthews the past couple seasons and was clearly just as valuable to our team's success.

Ok seriously, what the f*** gives here? Honestly.

I'm legitimately suspicious. None of the Canadian teams could get their RFA's on better deals than what the American counterparts got theirs on.

Point - who' EASILY the best player out of Boeser, Laine, and Tkachuk - got by freaking FAR the best contract out of that bunch that opted for the 3 year deals.

Now Rantanen - who I don't even think is better than Marner - just completely freaking destroyed us.

I don't know why people bring up Nylander. Nylander's contract will be a steal as soon as this season. Konecny, a much inferior player, got 1.46M less AAV than Nylander and yet Konecny's contract is looked as a good deal.
