Marner @ $10,893,000 this year based on 94 pts = $115,882 per point.

Laine @ $6,500,000 this year based on 50 pts = $130,000 per point.

Thats actual points not projections. Marner scored 4 less goals than Laine last year. His third consecutive year of increase in goals scored.
Eh, Nylander at $6,900,000 on 27 pts = $255,555 per point

Eh, Nylander at $6,900,000 on 27 pts = $255,555 per point

The comparison was Laine,s bridge deal that they have to deal with again in 2 years. If you weren’t trying to be disingenuous you would base it on games played also. Marner is the better deal by points production without even getting into that he is the higher quality multi tool, multi faceted higher value hockey player.

That was just a cap efficiency comparison that Marners contract is better for. It was suggested Laines contract was another reason Dubas is failing. I just showed it as a success in comparison

I dunno I think that bridge deal is gonna bite the Jets in the ass in 2 years time when Laine pots 50 goals.

Bridge deals are great while the players still on that deal, they become a lot less fun once that deal is over and your doing the next deal with less leverage and the players got a longer track record behind him

If any of these guys being bridged does well your eyes will cross at the numbers being discussed, I hate Marner's deal but he's tied up long term and we don't need to do this **** again in a couple of years

We have closure on our core stars for 5 years minimum and prospects on defense. Andersen and Rielly next up but time and space to be gained in the process. Laine and all these bridge deal will cost much more in 2/3 years and we are stable at that point. The qualifiers in all the deal are back loaded for the last year of the bridge also.

Absolutely wrong to attempt evaluating these Dubas contracts in a negative light with zero sample size. At this stage it is nothing but personal opinion and agenda by haters. Ridiculous bashing with no proof actually

People using Laine to. ash Dubas shows they're more interested in being angry at him than reasonably thinking things through

That caphit on a2 year deal is absolutely horrible. And smart money isnhes off the jets in a couple years just like Trouba. Not exactly something id wish was going on here....

Dude is coming through for us, big time. The work he did with the D, signing the three headed monster (unprecedented challenge imo). And his drafting so far... A potential home run with the 29th?

Yeah I'm good with the cap crunch, Suchks guess they gotta sign a bunch of depth guys making 700k in the Ahl. I have zero worries about depth.

This guy is such a fool.

Rather than saying ‘no comment’ on any ongoing legal issues, he throws Matthews under the bus with ‘we’re disappointed he didn’t tell us’... How ****in’ stupid are you to divulge that to the media? A group composed of garbage to begin with.

More interested in smiling for the cameras than what’s in the best interest of the team. His comments blew it up further and will now drag it on longer. Great job, dumbass. The season is about to start and you’ve given life to a story that could have been swept away with “We are aware of the allegations but have no comment on ongoing legal matters.” New England Patriots have been doing it for years and still keep it about football when they’re employing rapists and murders. They control the narrative and don’t breathe life into controversy. That’s the sensible thing to do.

Dubas is sold as some bright young kid but no matter how hard I try, I just don’t see it.

Or when he promised Nylander he'd never trade him as long as he was GM. He's as beta as it gets in hockey. Hence why he's playing victim here instead of protecting the team and organization. And you see what kinda contracts this yields also. We're in trouble with this guy. We can't have him handling the D contracts next season.

Yeah, beta is definitely the word.

It’s one thing to make mistakes when they could go either way, but talking to the media about controversy or a 5 year promise to a player will only create headlines and cause further distractions. It’s a no win.

Babcock and Lamoriello had worked very hard to make it a safe place where they shelter players from the media circus that goes on outside... Evidently, Dubas isn’t interested in continuing this.

I think he's doing pretty well.

He's young, he's inexperienced and I wish every contract was signed for less but.... he got the job done and the "three headed monster" is ours for the next 5 years. Prime years. And he's done that while improving the D. Not bad for a guy of his age and experience in a cap world.

Not a fan of the never trade comment to Nylander, but I'm not sure we got that verbatim from Willie.

As for him not protecting Matthews - that's on AM34. He acted irresponsibly, got caught and didn't tell his boss (Dubas) or the organization. That'll piss of pretty much any employer.

FWIW I don't see the Pats ability to employ (alleged?) rapists and murderers as anything to be particularly proud of...

Babcock was the first one to say that he didn't know about Matthews' legal trouble, actually. It probably forced Dubas into talking about it, because he had originally said he wasn't going to comment on it

Fair enough. Shame on him, too. I’m inclined to believe Lou and many other experienced wouldn’t have commented.

As of now, very few facts are available. We’ve heard one side of the story. Until your guy has a chance to come out and tell his side of the story, which he can’t do right now, there is zero benefit commenting to the media who’re like rabid dogs on stories like this.

Rather than trying to put the fire out they threw gas on it.

To be honest, I think all the teams that signed their high profile RFAs to bridge deals are going to regret it in a few years. Sure, their AAVs look great in the short term, but there is a good chance those players will all command over a 10 million AAV on their next contracts, and at that point in time, the deals for Matthews and Marner will look pretty damn good relatively speaking.

again.when most people are asked "When did you know" they don't go. "we're aware.". they go "we found out X."
like blow me down, people legitmatelly getting mad for Dubas telling the freaking truth. "No we didn't know, no we are disappointed that we weren't prepared, but we all know we can grow from them." - something that people refuse to acknowledge, he only said because Babcock said that he didn't know . Dubas said he wasn't going to comment.

(and honestly I don't give a crap that Babcock told the truth either).

it cracks me up to no end that Matthews is the one who didn't open his mouth and tell his team his issues, the team gets caught unawares, the team says "No. we didn't know we're disappointed that we didn'tknow but we're supporting our guy anyway." and people are upset at the guy who actually did nothing wrong.

It’s not at all, I was speaking to their ability to not comment on stuff outside of football. This always allows them to control the narrative, don’t give the press any quotes, and keep the focus on football.

Commenting on this type of **** only adds fuel to the fire.... and we don’t even know if he did anything wrong.. we heard one persons story.

In this case not commenting would have added more due what was already out there. There's already rumours the Leafs didn't know. Babcock had said he didn't know. Cat was out of the bag

Stonewalling just would have lead to more speculation. Did Dubas know and not tell Babcock? Is there a rift there? Why didn't Matthews tell Babcock? Is he not comfortable with his coach? Is there a rift there? Have Dubas and Matthews cut Babcock out of the loop? Wait, we're getting rumours that Dubas didn't find out until that day. Austin can you comment on whether or not you informed the Leafs? Can you comment on whether or not it effected the Captaincy decision?

The bandaid is off, this story is already running its course.

So you think adding more to the story was useful? More so than just saying no comment and only taking questions on hockey?

I get it. Fans want to know the tea, but it does little to help an athlete whose trying to focus on his job and now has to comment again after more information is leaked by his bosses.

If I was involved in something like this I would hope those closest to me wouldn’t give the media any quotes. That’s just me.

Re; not telling the organization. It’s tough to say. He wasn’t arrested and probably forgot about it until he received a summons in the mail. At that point he might have believed it was only a minor offence where he’d pay and fine and be done. Hindsight is 20/20 in these situations.

Either way, until we have actual facts it’s only fair to withhold judgment. Let the process play out and don’t comment.

That’s the right thing to do.

Yeah, those TMZ type reporters love to speculate.. But without facts, who cares if a bunch of reporters who lack integrity choose to speculate?

Almost every question can be answered with “no comment on ongoing legal matters” and nothing more.

All the premier sports organizations operate with a cone of silence. Leaks = problems = controversy = distraction.
