Remember when Dave Tallon did a stellar job in other ways leading the Blackhawks towards Cup contention but still got canned for totally messing up the team's contract situation by missing the qualifying offer deadline?

I think we may be in a similar situation like that in the "perform or perish" world of pro sports. It would be harsh but not unprecedented. And what I don't want for any GM is a "make the playoffs and win a round" ultimatum. That leads to panic moves.

My suggestion is Shanahan takes over the GM title for the year and delegates the job to the very well-populated front office.

Just more evidence Dubas is awful at contracts. We can't let him deal with the D core next year.

Wait why? Why do you think a 2 year-bridge is good for a potential consistent 40-50 goal scorer?

Based on the contract-model that someone posted a while ago: Marner was overpaid by 2 million. Laine's bridge contract is also overpaid by 2 million.

This past week it's been a big flip on my confidence in Dubas seeing what other teams have done roughly equal players. I don't want him doing any more major contracts. And our cap guru has to take some of the blame as well. Anyone can just give the highest number for a slot in a negotiation. That's not negotiation, that's capitulation.

I think this hit Dubie like a ton of bricks. We will see in next week but it is my understanding that Dubie was in the Matty camp which is why I voted Matty even though I thought Rielly would be best captain. I would bet Dubie reconsidered his opinion after this incident.

Completely understandable if he did change his mind. Pretty common not to reward misconduct. Personally if it were me in the Dubas job and i had planned on introducing him as Captain i still could. That’s completely understandable also.

No media clown would dictate my decisions i tell you! That said, i would stick with not rewarding misconduct as the better principle for positive growth intellectually.

So on principle i would not give him the captaincy today.

There is very little left for the D so I am not sure how much more damage can be done. We are now at take it or leave it based on CAP. The closer you get to CAP and with LT contracts in place there is very little room and really not much managing.

Eh, not a single other gm has been able to get their tier 1/ star RFA done long term. Dubas could have punted with a bridge too but decided to pay a premium to lock the core in

Laine is a 50 point player that fed on the powerplay and done nothing much otherwise. You comparing him to Marner are you. 50pts vs 94 pts hmmmm

Laine last year was a johnsson comparable. He flat out sucked ass. He got overpaid 1-1.5 mill on his deal. His ceiling is very high but the jets took huge risk. If laine breaks out they're gonna be paying him 12-13 million when they could've had him for 10.5 or so rn on a 6-7 year type deal.

If last year continues than he is not worth 6.75 mill now and not worth it 2 years from now.

I believe in laine and his potential. He is going to be imo slightly below marner. But a good deal would have been 3 years 6 million. 2 years 6.75 million is 750k overpay in aav and the extra year pushes it above 1 million and close to 1.5 million overpay

You can’t compare lesser players on bridge deal to Marners contract and quality. You can but your full of it if you do how bout that

Maybe you should wait to see how Dubas' team does for a couple years?

Already talking about canning him before the Matthews or Marner deals start is ridiculous and naive.

Laine is not a 50 point player. He had a massive down year.

He's a 40 goal scorer. Maybe only 60-70 points, but goals are worth more than assists.

It's a good deal for Winnipeg. They maintain control, and they can let him prove what he is.

Marner @ $10,893,000 this year based on 94 pts = $115,882 per point.

Laine @ $6,500,000 this year based on 50 pts = $130,000 per point.

Thats actual points not projections. Marner scored 4 less goals than Laine last year. His third consecutive year of increase in goals scored.

Dubas looks to be getting better value already

how is Laine's contract evidence that Dubas is awful?
It doesn't help.

Winnipeg is loaded with team friendly deals - they were saying the exact same thing on Overdrive 5 minutes ago. Toronto is going to regret having 4 players making 50% of the Cap. It's insane.

I understand you had to pay JT $11M to get him here, but W.N., A.M. and M.M. are overpaid.
