I'm frustrated by having a talented team with lots of depth too.

Yep.

Like obviously there are valid things to be critical about - I'm not a fan of the Marner contract-but I don't know how any rational Leafs "fan" can look at this roster, that literally has 2 top 10 centers in the league, a couple top pairing D men, and on top of that still have star winger power and say "what a disaster, this is horrible".

I've long said there a small but very loud minority of Leafs fans who would much rather be miserable than cheer for their team to succeed.

I'm frustrated that other teams will be just as talented as us but have more flexibility to add/modify their rosters.

Is there something about the depth on the Marlies you aren’t seeing. Now i will go back to the start of this build where we had nothing, garbage no depth no talent that rated contender etc.

We wanted to draft, develop, promote from within and manage assets to maintain depth. Every single box is checked. We promote from within when a player is needed because we have a great system throughout the organization.

Should i start listing the hign end prospects and pickups in the system that are capable of making this teams continued success very real and possible.

Complain, complain is all that’s prevalent on here by some.

I fully support Dubas and his capologist team. Imho they know exactly if the team can affor the conctracts or not
id rather have all of our superstars than have a better paid 4thline/5th6th d or even a 3rd line c at 4.5m

Which teams are as talented as the leafs with way more cap room?

Bolts and Bruins have more talent and more cap space currently.

We're still as soft as a paper bag and I would want to see how our right side of defense holds up over 82 games before I start saying stuff like we have everything.

Are we giving Dubas all the credit for this stuff? Lou did do some things for him, he managed to get him Andersen and dump Phaneuf without retaining. Believe Kyle Dubas actually retained 1.2M in the Kessel transaction, he learned from that when dumping Zaitsev etc so cheers.

Hunter pushed for Marner.

Believe it was Shanny that pushed for Nylander.

So a 62 win team and a team that made the finals are the only examples you can come up with? Better sound the alarms I guess, Leafs are screwed

Didn't have to look beyond our division to see it lol. Feel free to look at other divisions :)

If we go out in round 1 again or we going with the bs "it's a developmental year" like last year's debacle?

Well Tampa, Toronto, and Boston are arguably the three best teams for next year. Good thing Toronto has easily the best young core out of that trio too

Boston is older, and Tampa lost D and depth.

I don't know if either team is demonstrably better or deeper than the Leafs right now, and that credit belongs to Dubas.
I'd say Tampa is still better for now but I'd take Toronto's roster over Boston's

Ok ok there are going to be ups and downs for any person or manager. Sandin and Robertson are his. Dubas blueprint is speed ,skill and possession. I think this is accomplished.

We will see who is the best team in our division this year. I think it will be us.

Well it was development years for christ sake. These guys are basically kids who are just reaching peak, prime years whatever we want toncall it. I don’t mind the curve we are entering one bit.

Prime money for prime years. Welcome to hard salary cap no!

Until Toronto wins at least a round, I am not ready to proclaim anything about us having the best anything.

Bolts might have had some disappointments but they've had a somewhat recent Finals appearance and advanced to round 2 etc.

Now will you ever have the perfect LD-RD, 12 forwards etc? Sometimes you do and don't win a cup. Caps looked like their window had closed and they won a Cup.

My gripe with Dubas is he overpaid in dollars and didn't get the term for it so by the time some of our divisional rivals are getting older, we're going to need to re-up our young core and we'll be squeezed out of another roster player or two because of it because Matthews is gonna cost us 18M next deal at this rate lol.

lol, marner, matthews, nylander are overpaid by like 3 mill total

go thru every teams capfriendly and tell me how many teams arent over paying players on their roster by a total 3 million or so.

sucks to overpay these guys, but to act like it puts us at a disadvantage is not true.

there might be like 1-2 teams that dont have any bad contracts on their team. Most of the time, teams are made up of good and bad value contracts. It all balances out.

Speed, skill and possession are all great but he does need to learn that you need to make some room for some grit and size too, it needs to be functional though. Muzzin was a good add on his part, he hits, blocks shots and can move the puck etc. Good add. He needs to add some more players like that because playoffs are different and you can't finesse your way the whole post-season.

That wasn't a development year, that was a go for it year. Team flopped. Team owns some of it, coach owns some of it and the GM owns some of it.

I'd be fine with with a 3M overpay but get the term if we're going to overpay.

Matthews at his price should be 7 years, 2nd highest AAV in the league. Rantanen is getting 9.25M aav, the 10.89M should get us 7-8 years with Marner. Okay, get the term if you're overpaying in dollars but if other teams are signing equally as talented players for the same length but paying less....we got a problem.

I agree, I dont know how Dubas managed to f*** it up the way he did, but its not the end of the world. I dont think these overpays are putting the leafs at a disadvantage at all, or at the very least, a big disadvantage.

Connor's production gets a big helping hand via being the staple LW on the Jets 1st line and the 1st PP unit.

I haven't been happy with Dubas lately but let's keep things objective.
The 5v5 production is essentially equal and I heard all summer goalscorers get more whenever people mention Matthews vs Eichels deal. Connor gave up 3 UFA years compared to 1, didn’t sit out until December, that is objective. Look at all the extras Nylander got that should drive down AAV that Connor didn’t get either.

I think we'd all agree this roster is pretty good, not perfect but good. The overpays appear at this moment to prevent us from icing a 23 man roster or going for help to address areas of weakness at the trade deadline. So I do see us a bit behind the 8 ball already...see where we go from there.

Man there are some whiny people on here! You couldn't ask for a better team that isn't built on hind sight. This is our team, that is that. Stop bitching and start cheering! Or just go away. Sick of the drama.

I'm looking forward to seeing this team gelling and firing on all cylinders. It's going to be a treat. Very few holes 1 through 20.

For all the "overpayments," when Hyman comes back, Kapanen falls to the third line. Then comes Dermott. There is no team more talented or more deep than this season's Leafs. The best Leaf team these 40 year old eyes has ever seen. Only our loud minority of idio...sorry, cynics, could have a problem with this.
Excellent post. We have the most talented Leaf team in decades with its extremely talented core (signed for at least the next 5 years) all under the cap this year and people are complaining? Dubas has assembled a team this year that will contend for the Cup and in years to come because the core has been signed. He has shown a knack for filling in the 3rd and 4th liners with serviceable players. He's drafted a gem in Sandin and picked up a hidden gem in Mikhayev. Therefore, let's enjoy this year and leave the job of cap management and finding players who complement our core to Dubas and his staff. I can imagine the whining from these same people if Dubas hadn't signed Marner and one year of our window to a cup possibly gone. We're a stronger team with Marner signed than without him. Let's win a Cup and then deal with the issues that'll come up in the coming years.
