So comparable players sign fairly comparable contracts, and we should consider this slight against Dubas?

You're stretching here again
They aren't that comparable. Connor gave up 3 full UFA years, Nylander gave up 1. That's a pretty big difference. The only way they are is if you view UFA and RFA years as equal, which no GM should or does (excpet maybe Dubas).

Why are we complaining about a 2nd round pick that isn't even in our system anymore and that we used to upgrade significantly on the back end with Muzzin?

Durzi was coming off a pretty serious injury if I recall correctly and he definitely wasn't ready to play in the AHL last year. Even if that pick is a miss to you he's gone anyways so who cares? lol
Durzi wasn't coming off an injury. He was injured in 2016-17, not 2018-19. The issue is with the process. People are acting like he was the primary piece of that trade. Not the 3rd throw-in.

Bad negotiator, but overall a good GM. We're carrying about an extra 3.5 M in dead cap for the big 3. I'd say almost every other team is doing the same though with someone who isn't earning their salary. We should still be able to win but won't have the advantage over other teams that we could have had until the cap goes up quite a bit.

Verdict is in and Dubas very definitively lost the Marner negotiation. It sucks, considering just how profile it is and there's no doubt that it's a direct result of the Matthews and Nylander contract situations. Some blame falls to the player for the amount of shenanagins that went on this summer, but the GM who signs the contracts is the one who bears the responsibility at the end of the day. I think nicer thoughts about the Matthews deal and feel totally fine about Nylander's actual deal, but they very clearly were not wins. With most of the other RFA deals looking like clear wins, this sucks.

But the verdict is also in on Sandin and he's an absolute player. Still deliberating on our defense as a whole, but it looks absolutely outstanding right now. Kapanen and Johnsson have great deals too and if one of them really breaks out this year it will make overpaying Marner a whole lot more palatable. All this is to say that there's more to the GM and his job than just signing the big guns. I wouldn't give Dubas an F on signing the big 3 because he did get them signed, but a big fat D would have me calling for his head if he hadn't had solid successes elsewhere. I think he's done quite will in the draft, I think he's built a very good defense, and he's done a solid job signing some secondary pieces to value deals.

I'm nervous as all hell if he's the guy negotiating with Muzzin and Barrie for next year, but I trust him completely to juggle a trade or two to get space for both. I trust him completely to lock up Dermott on a good deal. I trust him at the draft to pick players like Sandin and Robertson. The shine is definitely off and I don't think he's a boy wonder, but I still think he's been adding value to the organization despite the high profile setbacks with our stars.

I agree with this and here is the thing... yes he over paid our big guns, but I really trust his ability to assess talent and decide if a player is one who should be paid. When it comes to Muzzin I think he will understand that he is reaching a certain age where it might not make sense to hand out top dollar. I dont think Dubas will be a guy who has bad UFA deals because of this... he just didnt have the balls to play chicken with the RFAs because he understood how valuable they were to the team.

Pick a spot. The exchange rate is factored into our pricing

Are you trying to tell me that the cost of living everywhere near and around Toronto is as high as downtown Toronto?

Because it's not.

The exchange rate is not factory in and won't always be something we can count on.

Dubas, in my opinion has done an excellent job. Fixed all of Lou’s mistakes, made the defence better, added better coaching, as well as signed his core players to long term deals. His drafting record so far has also been good. Very impressive work!

Been whining for decades, but I will admit Shanny had the ship pointed in the right direction, until the 3 amigos decided not to take "discounts".

You think 3 million in lost cap space is going to make that much of a difference in the end?? Give your head a shake

Could be worse- we could be icing this team

Agree, he overpaid the RFA’s but he has put together a damn good team.

The world is ending posters will disagree though.

Damn good team on paper for sure, talk to me in January when one of our top two centers are injured. Hoping thats not the case but with the history or AM this team is deep trouble.
