When you combine Kopitar's less than great play, and the struggles of the team, this contract situation couldn't have happened at a worse time.

Pretty much this. If Kopitar's contract is shorter by even a year, this is really not a debate, and he ends up with a Toews contract. I suppose that's lucky for us, unlucky for him.

Surprised nobody else has mentioned that a lot of big name centers are also in weird slumps even Crosby and Getzlaf. I honestly think the league has just slowly gotten more and more defensive and harder hitting. They aren't 20 anymore and getting their noodle scrambled just to force a point in the first couple of games in the season doesn't seem to appeal to them. Couple that with ALL the drama that has happened this past off season, missing the playoffs, contract negotiations, newish wife, and un baby. Life can be crazy, we like our hockey players to be minor gods. They aren't. :blah:

7 years for 73.5 Million is unlucky? Still to much IMO. If for 7 years, try 65 Million (+- 9.2 aav). Now that is unlucky =) This should be the max for Kopi. This is still generous and a ton of denero, and it's a lot more than what Getlaf gets aav.

making sense is not welcome here

After last season and these first three games, I wonder what the ol' interior is looking like/feeling like these days.

Kurri, We love ya man.

Actually you stop to care at some point.
I know 99.9% of the people here have a different opinion as me but that is fine and what a forum is for.

It's the same old ... meh just 2 games in... meh just 10 games...
and this turns into ... no problem still 20 games left... we turn it around the last 10 games.... we are mathematically not eliminated... well, now we are.

I still have my opinion.
Our 2 cups covered up how massive our problems actually are.

From my point of view this is not even a system.
We would win all games when they remove both goals.
Sadly the point of hockey is to somehow move a little black disk into a red cage guarded by opponents.

It doesn't matter how long or how often you have the puck, it doesn't matter you do the little things right.

Fact is you have to overcome the opponents to make it happen.

As defender you learn important things very early.
1. make sure the opponents don't enter at the center
2. keep them at the boards, away from the danger zone
3. in the best case you force them into the corners because this is where the opponent will be at most disadvantage.
4. combine all that and the opponent will not score

Our offense system is waiving all advantages and even start with us being in disadvantage.
1. enter the zone at the boards
2. hug the boards
3. try to get to the corner as fast as possible
4. uhmm.. jeahh just stay there but make sure you have the puck
5. pass back to blue line, any other way is covered
6. shoot into the crowd
7. run after the turnover when puck gets deflected by opponent
8. tap goalies shoulder and tell him it's not his fault after the goal

This system CAN NOT score.
How people still defend it is far beyond me.
So yes.. you get more quite and let the people do who know way better than you.

But back to topic.
It doesn't matter you give Kopitar 4, 8 or 12 million.
The outcome will be the same because it is simply not his fault

I stopped reading at the bolded. Something tells me I've read this crap before.

Amirite?

so it's not the system but then you blame the system?

Kopitar should hold off signing at this point. With the future of the team uncertain, he'd be much better off leaving himself the ability to choose where he signs his next contract. He would look good on Nashville.

You know Kurri, you're in left field quite a bit, but I have to say that this assessment of the Kings offense:

1. enter the zone at the boards
2. hug the boards
3. try to get to the corner as fast as possible
4. uhmm.. jeahh just stay there but make sure you have the puck
5. pass back to blue line, any other way is covered
6. shoot into the crowd
7. run after the turnover when puck gets deflected by opponent
8. tap goalies shoulder and tell him it's not his fault after the goal

is pretty much perfect.

Kings are rolling along racking up pts...

So where are we 30 games in on the value of Kopitar... and his new contract?

He obviously is way more valuable than his pt production.. so how much?
What's the feeling from Kings fan on the matter of his hit/term?

It's gonna hurt.

It'll be a ton of money.

He'll probably be overpaid.

It's inevitable.

The only thing left is to wait.

KINGS17 is evil.

RP will lose his avatar over this post.

My opinion is that the Kings have to re-sign Kopitar.

The championship window closes without him since the Kings other moves and contracts were all made on the assumption that Kopitar is a King. The team can't wait for any center prospect they get in trade to develop. Disclosure: he's my favorite King so I don't want to see him go.

Without Kopitar, that means Carter is the 1C. Carter's numbers would not be nearly as good since he'd be up against other teams top lines. He'd spend far too much energy trying to contain a Toews or Seguin. Plus he's older than Kopitar so Carter's ability to go against other playoff team's 1C is going to start to level off in the next few years.

If 8 years keeps Kopitar's AAV lower or is necessary to keep him then 8 years is what he needs to get.

As for dollars, I would like to see $9ish so the rumored $9.75 is on the high side of what I'd be willing to go for.
