Kopitar needs to break 25 goals a season to be effective and make his linemates most effective. He needs to get his shot totals up where they were season before last. He needs to get to the dangerous scoring areas to shoot.

Someone posted the shot charts comparing Kopitar and Toews from last season not long ago. Go back and take a look at those. The areas where Toews is shooting from defines a 1C.

If Kopitar is willing and able to get to those areas and shoot more often, then he is a 1C again in my eyes. Right now when he gets the puck in the offensive zone along the boards, I don't see him as a threat to get to the middle and score at all. Most of the time he passes it back to the point for a low percentage shot. Looks great for the corsi, but doesn't put many goals up on the board.

So, you're taking over this thread as well? ;)

Yet their ppgs are very close? I agree he needs to shoot more, but the toEws and Kopitar arguments are silly because almost all their numbers are identical. They have different styles of play offensively, but you can't say it's alot more effective because the results are the same.

Their numbers are not identical. You're kidding yourself if you think their numbers from last season are nearly identical. Kopitar's style of play has become more and more passive as time has gone on, practically everyone here recognizes that.

The results are not the same, sorry they just aren't.

Their ppgs were identical last year which is the measure of offensive output. That's with his annual slump and his slow regression. Just because toews had more goals doesn't mean he is a better offensive player.

The results are the same as the offensive output is the same in terms of points.

Of course it does, especially when you consider the number of secondary assists Kopitar gets over the course of a season. Guys that score goals get more money, and rightfully so.

Now we will just agree to disagree because that's an arguement that I certainly don't agree with. Using that argument basically says the kessels, paciorettys, Nash, etc should make more money that the jumbo joes, getzlaf, etc. or you would prefer Daniel over henrik Sedin.

I do prefer toews style like you, but I don't discount kopitars stats regardless of his perimeter play style.

what would it take for ottawa to acquire kopitar? he's probably going to be asking for a huge contract that could put your team into cap troubles

Doesn't matter. If we lose Kopitar, we're rebuilding altogether. And you guys are building around young talent. So a trade would be counterintiuitive imo. Start around Zibanejad.

You don't trade your top end talent for "cap troubles". You deal some of the secondary talent if you have. Not too mention Kings cap troubles are overrated with Voynov and Richards gone.

If they did it'd be Zibanejed, OTT 1st, and keeping adding quite a bit more, IMO.

Doesn't show up for the games, but will gladly show up to the conference table. I wouldn't give this guy an offer let alone a contract until the season is over.

Jesus, would you let the man talk!!!

Agreed, at least not now. Why the urgency? The Kings organization needs to know
if Kopitar is from this point a 15 to 20 goal scoring 1.5 way center .5 offense and 1.0 defense, or a 2 way center. He has chosen to be strong on the puck and on the boards and play a puck possession game and create less offense and shooting the puck.
No way does that deserve 8+ million for 8 years. If he was putting up 25+ goals and
75 points, Ii would be okay with this...but he may be a 17 goal 55 point player from here on out and since that is a good possibility. AND, it will only decline...and in 2018 this board will be pissed about this deal. I would not have an offer on the
table unless he proves otherwise - which may take till December to find out.
Start talks then...an offer on the table now, is a mistake. No urgency. Also
puts presure on Kopi to produce.

If the Kings continue sukage and are out of the playoffs by February,
which could be possible for a team that cannot score 2 goals a game -
and if he has an 8 year deal, it would have been a mistake. At that
juncture, it may be best to trade him for a good return. Rebuild?
If the Kings are worse than last year and out of the playoffs
a second consecutive season, this is not a Cup team. How could
you possibly call it that?

The first born male child in every household.

Has Dean lost his mind? Kopitar should be getting dangled in trades, he certainly shouldn't be given an 8-year extension when he's been washed up for years!

"Hello."

"Hi, Pat Brisson for Dean Lombardi."

*long pause*

"I'm sorry Mr. Brisson, Mr. Lombardi isn't in the office today."
